Capcom preps new arcade fighting game

From Gamespot

Rumors of impending Street Fighter 4 unveiling get a boost as company says it will unveil a new fighting game later this week.

TOKYO--A long-awaited fourth installment in Capcom's Street Fighter franchise might finally be on the horizon. An unofficial list of games expected to appear at the Amusement Machine Show in Japan September 1-3 has been making the rounds on Internet message boards lately, and it has Street Fighter 4 down as a game to be shown at Capcom's booth.

Capcom has added some fuel to that fire today with the announcement that it will indeed be showing off a new arcade fighting game at the show. The company made no mention as to whether the game would be an installment of an existing franchise or a new product altogether. Regardless, the new fighting game will only be presented in video format, meaning it's most likely to be quite early in development.

Other games Capcom has scheduled to appear include Super Mario: Fushigi no Korokoro Party 2, Geki Makai Mura, Pingu's Ice Block, and Donkey Kong Jungle Fever (a really disturbing Spike Lee joint about interspecies relationships, perhaps?).

Capcom is widely known for its Street Fighter series but has all but abandoned its fighting franchises of late. Franchises like Darkstalkers, Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter EX, Star Gladiator, and the Vs. series have gone years without new installments, and last year's crossover compilation Capcom Fighting Evolution on the PlayStation 2 (released earlier this year on the Xbox) was met with critical apathy.

The annual Amusement Machine Show is a distributor-oriented event and is closed to the general public on days one and two. Day three is open to the public, and entrance is free.

GameSpot will bring additional information on Capcom's new mystery fighter as it becomes available.

Capcom Plans New Action Game

From IGN

Arcade game set for debut at upcoming arcade show.

Capcom has announced its plans for this week's JAMMA arcade show, set to kick off on Thursday in Japan. Most interesting in the company's lineup is a mysterious new game that's currently labeled as "New Competitive Action Game" and is set to be shown in video form only. Going by the Japanese version of the name, we could be looking at a new fighting game, although there's room for something entirely different as well.

The rest of the company's plans focus heavily on classic franchises. Capcom will show Super Mario Fushigi no Korko Koro Party 2, Ghouls and Ghosts, Donkey Kong Jungle Fever and other titles in playable form. These are all medal/prize games, so don't get too excited about the prospects of a Donkey Kong or Mario return to arcades.

IGN will have a full report from JAMMA on late Wednesday/early Thursday. Stay tuned.

j/k, that'll never happen...:(

I will seriously break in tears if it's SF4...

...if it ain't, I'll fucking murder all the bastards making me think there was a chance of this happening!

If Capcom does decide to put out SF4, I really hope they get rid of the sucktastic superhero rejects from SF3 (and its sequels). :p Characters like Gill, Necro, Oro, Q, and Twelve really turned me off--not only are they uncharismatic compared to the rest of the cast, but they just don't feel like they belong in a Street Fighter game.

SF4 SF4 SF4 SF4 SF4 SF4 SF4 SF4 SF4 SF4 SF4 SF4 SF4 SF4 SF4 SF4 T_T

You know that we need it, we want it.

X360 with SF4 for this christmars and Live Enabled.

i was thinking it could probably be Sammy vs Capcom, seeing as how that was announced before, and nothing more was said after that. I am definitely hoping for a Street Fighter 4 much more though..... this amusement show shall be interesting indeed.

2D + Cel-shading + not more than 16 characters

please

I think you mean 2D + Cel-shading + more than 16 characters. :p (I don't know about you, but I don't like the idea of Capcom releasing a fighter with an anemic selection of characters, then adding new ones here and there until five years and a half-dozen sequels later, you've finally got a decent-sized roster. Hell with that. They should start with a good-sized selection and work up from there.)

If they announce any other fighting game besides Street Fighter then heads will roll.

Street Fighter's Anniversary, Capcom. What's up with a new installment?

I believe Street Fighter IV could be a fighter revival, depending on how Capcom advertises it. If it succeeds, I'm sure they could then saturate the market with Darkstalkers, Rival Schools, maybe try to get licensing worked out for MvC3 or CvS3.

Blah. I'm just setting myself up for disappointment.

Nah, 16 is more than enough to start with. I want a balanced masterpiece, not a broken piece of shit like the vs games.

More characters doesn't automatically mean broken gameplay, you know. Sure, it's harder to balance a bigger cast, but not impossible. Personally, I'd rather see them release to arcades first, balance and tune based on player feedback, then release a home version a few updates down the line with a decent-sized, well-balanced roster. 16 characters may be more than enough for you, but for me, it's the bare minimum for interesting matchups. I like variety. :p

Who's this jerk again? I forget since people hardly ever use him. Really, for SF4, they should just let his backstory derail into a lurid sex change account and BAM! The Return Of Karin!!

Ken isn't even tops anymore, he's currently 4th in the Japan tiers (Makoto passed him). I guess people got so used to playing him that they've gotten used to his tricks. Still a bastard though.

This is great news if true, the fighting genre just isn't the same without a new Capcom 2d fighter to choose from.

Anyone think we will ever see Marvel vs. Capcom 3 in the future? I would kill for a sequel.

For all the people saying "heads will roll".... point them towards people like "editor" and frothing fanboys instead of a backlash at Capcom and whatever game they show if it isn't SF4.

The SF4/Fighting Game speculation seems really out of touch, and I can't think of any way Capcom could have worded a press release that would get people to confuse Kakuto Taisen (fighting) or Vs. Fighting (Capcom's designation for fighting games) could be anywhere near "New Competitive Action Game".

Eh, with characters like Blanka and Zangief, I honestly don't feel that the SF2-era cast is any better than the SF3.

Blanka's a freak, true, but 'Gief doesn't look any more freakish than your average steroid-juiced pro wrestler. A couple of oddballs thrown into the mix isn't so bad, but too many of the fighters in SF III seemed to be a departure from the tradition of costuming characters based on their nationality and/or fighting style. If this was the first game in an entirely new series, I might have felt differently, but after playing the games that came before SF III, I just didn't like the whole 'freak squad' vibe I got from the roster.

if my hunch is correct

thanks for the answer to everyone's question jarrod.

now I know... this game will LOOK good... but the gameplay probably wont be the same.

damn... i really hoped it was another powerstone like game... i think a bit more than I wanted SF4

Arc.

System.

Works.

so obvious if you think about it... they scrapped the sammy vs. capcom project quietly to deliver SF4.

Edit~ ACK! The King pooped on my parade. :(

Arc System Works is making it, Sega was going to publish it but now Capcom's stepped up. It's 2D, for Atomiswave and is what became of "Sammy Vs Capcom".

Interesting. I hope it doesn't play like a GGX clone, though. Arc System Works did a great job balancing the GGX games, but I don't personally care for how they play, for some reason.

Never. Capcom doesn't have access to the marvel license anymore.

If so, please have as many animation frames as 3S.

I was almost expecting a non-Japanese developer, followed by GAFfers flipping the fuck out. Personally, eh, I figure it's about time a different nation can make a good fighting game.

So what is the consensus now then?

Yun
Chun Li
Makoto
Ken
Urien

And why Makoto? SA II and her command grab?
Yeah pretty much. The karakusa -> fp -> SAII can be comboed to something that does 100% stun to everybody, you just gotta know how to do Kara's and be really good. Actually Ken has advantage over Makoto on a 1 on 1 so it's a blurry line. Makoto's on something I call 'random tier'. She either destroys or gets destroyed. I'd say she's like on that blurry line between top tier and upper top tier.

And Guilty Gear is a great looking game. And since I'm sure Arc knows about the complains about the animation, I'm sure they'll pay attention to it. They'll probably have multiple times the budget than for GG. Wait, does this officially mean 2D?

Makoto is pretty random yeah. There is a guessing game whenever she's in your face where she wins (massive) free damage about 50% of the time. If you block or parry she chokes you into an ex hayate & corner juggle or SA1/2, if you jump or jab you can hit confirm a combo and push her away or score a knockdown. Then there's option for her to play hi-lo games instead of going for the grab.
