Capcom and Konami were already in the NES era regarded as the best 3rd party developers. Already back when I was a kid I said: oh it's a new Capcom game! Oh it's a new Konami game!

Let's have a look at each generation highlights. I only count games that has been released (etc RE4 for PS2 does not count yet since it's not out)

Looking at all these games it's hard to say which developer who is better overall. Imo, Konami has had the best consistancy, but Capcom with the BETTER highlights.
Maybe someone else can break down their personal winner. ^^ :D

Street Fighter and Megaman versus IIDX, Pop'n, MGS, Silent Hill, Castlevania, and Gradius.

...

Probably Konami, though Street Fighter makes it absurdly close.

And if you want suggestions to add to the list, you're missing almost all of Konami's Bemani lineup.

They've both earned their place in the industry, but my personal preferences lean towards Capcom. Not enjoying Contra or Castlevania games contributes largely to this. Though Konami's TMNT and MGS games were quite nice.

You forgot Contra SS and ZOE games on PS2 and Street Fighter 3 Anv/Megaman Anv. on PS2.

Capcom was the sheeeeeiiiiiitzzzzzz... on Dreamcast, Komani is the Sheeeeeeiiiiitttzzzzz... on PS2.

Capcom is the better multi-porting old School compony, Komani is better at re-making Old School sequels(though Graduis V was treasure) yet limited to PS2.

Overall goes to Capcom, yet both componies seem to be the fraction of what they once were.

Konami wins overall. Capcom made some of my favourite games ever, including Third Strike and Mega Man 2. But my all time favourites are SotN and Suikoden 2, and Suikoden 3, DDR Extreme and Pop'n Music 10 are pretty high up on my list too.

Capcom got stuck in stagnant river with street fighters (as just one example) for quite few years to have one up over konami. Yes, sorry 3D Castlevanias as bad they are, are no match for same street fighter game released like over 3 dozen times. Things do seem to be changing for better though lately
:)

Capcom has won every generation against Konami IMO. The NES generation is the only one that's even close. Konami makes great games but they lost something during the PSX era in my opinion. Suddenly their games became more about cinematic cut-scenes and less about gameplay. MGS (one of the most overrated series ever, again IMO) was mostly responsible. SOTN was fun but I feel that it too is grossly overratted (I prefer CV3 and SCV4). I really used to love Konami as a developer but nowadays I'm not that crazy about them.

Why didn't you just make this 'Capcom vs Castlevania' since that's pretty much all it was for your stance?

With that said, Capcom has a bit more aura around them. Street Fighter and Mega Man are just embedded in the industry forever. This generation Viewtiful Joe and RE4 are better than anything I've enjoyed from Konami since SoTN.

I haven't tried MGS3 yet, but MGS2 just left a very bitter taste in my mouth about the MGS franchise.

Hmm, I really enjoyed the Megaman Legends games. I'd give the PSX to Capcom. Though, I didn't adopt SoTN until after I played the GBA games.

Edit - Oh, and during the PSX era I knew how good MGS was and I saw it for dirt cheap often, but for some reason I didn't pick it up. This generation I picked up Twin Snakes at launch, though.

Castlevania gets the edge in two of my categories. Nothing more.

Imo, Konami has had the best consistancy, but Capcom with the BETTER highlights.

Overall, you're missing a lot of games, actually.

I'd probably list all the games they developed with an average score above eighty percent.

Wasn't Aladdin on Genesis/SNES by Capcom?

Capcom made the "meh" SNES version where all you could do is throw apples.

The Genesis version was a collaboration by (IIRC) Virgin, Shiny, and Sega, and featured superior game play and animation.

Damn, now I crave a new Megaman Legends game. A lot of good memories came from those games (Like playing for 10 hours because my parents wouldn't buy me another memory card).

I know I am missing a lot of games, but I try to hover around the 90% mark (and above), therefor it's called highlights (AAA)

Heh, but you included the N64 Castlevania.

I included the improved N64 Castlevania and Castlevania Loi because some people really like them. But I agree. They probably shouldn't make the list.

This is just a tuff call. :lol

Konami = action games
Capcom = Fighters

If either or both these's componies quite making arcade style games, I'd walk from gaming. Atari's dust, Nin dosen't make arcade style stuff anymore and Sega is starting to fade.

Capcom by far, for their 2D fighters alone, let alone their other stuff, but I still really like Konami. Both companies are my favorites.

for my own personal tastes I'm gonna have to go with Capcom overall, again for me personally they've just been more consistant over the years

Konami's about 3 times as large as Capcom and releases 80% shovelware. It's like comparing EA to Rockstar or something.

Konami is my favourite videogame company but I have to admit that their best times were in the 16/32 bit eras...Good games this gen though.

Twin Snakes was made by SK as we all know. That's why I didn't want to add it.
But the cutscenes were made by Konami! So you can actually say that's 50% off the work :lol :)

You can't be fucking serious.

Concerning the PS2, Konami has been about a billion times better.

I added konami games I forgot to the PS2 list, and I haven't bothered to update...but yes it should be in favor of Konami as of now.

edit: updated. happy now ^^

It's definitely one of them. It's Konami. Metal Gear Solid series, Castlevania SOTN, the other Castlevanias, Contra series, Turtles, DDR and more. Capcom is great too though and SF2 Turbo is their best game..

Capcom's been better this generation overall I'd say. More experimental too.
