Capcom vs Konami - Best 3rd party developer over the years?

konami made many almost perfect games, but the fact that they skiped mostly the Dreamcast remove them any chance go get the title.

I used to love Capcom games, but lately it's been rehash and more rehashes, or sequels and more sequels...

They did have some high points, apparently RE4 is good, Dragon Quarter I liked, but...well...that's where it ends

With Konami, I got so many good memories with them...MGS3 being the best so far...just too bad they mucked up suikoden 4...you bastards...sob...sob...

Capcom for supporting the underdog against all financial sense

IAWTP

I think it comes down to:

Street Fighter
Megaman
Resident Evil (+related- DC, DMC, Onimusha)

vs

Castlevania
Winning Eleven (ISS, Pro Evo etc)
Metal Gear Solid
Goemon

Gunsmoke was the very first game i ever bought in my life when i was about 9 or 10 years old so capcom will always be somthing special to me :) but i think i have wasted most of my time playing the winning eleven/iss/pro evo series than any other game.

Some corrections on the Genesis. First are you counting games that were prduced in the arcade by capcom or did the company have to produce the home vesions to count? Alot of Capcom games were programmed by Sega themselves on the Genesis. I am assuming you are also counting reprommed capcom games as capcom games for the Genesis since you listed "Strider" on the samll highlight list.

I would have to give Capcom the edge on Genesis. On Snes I would give Konami the edge.

Konami has stumbled a lot recently. They've nearly driven Suikoden into the ground with parts 3 and 4 after the godly 2, and Silent Hill has gone steadily downhill since its classic second installment as well. Neo Contra is okay, but criminally easy (I finished all 7 stages with an overall A rank on my third playthrough, and I never even made it to stage 6 on Shattered Soldiers). Gradius V and MGS 3 are incredible, but Gradius V was outsourced to Treasure, and I'm not terribly impressed that Konami has managed to create a competant sequel to only one of their many big franchises in the last year. Konami has relied almost exclusively on old franchises this generation, and hasn't been able to introduce much of anything in the way of quality new IP. And with the way they've been mishandling series like Suikoden and Silent Hill, they're not going to be able to rely on those old series for very long.

Capcom OTOH has introduced more original games this generaton than just about anybody. Maximo, Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, Steel Battalion, BoF: Dragon Quarter, Onimusha, Ookami, etc. They're on a roll with RE4 and DMC3

Latley it has been Capcom due to many more produced games, and great compilation discs such as Mega Man and Street Fighter.

Konami made the beautiful Metal Gear Solid 3 which destroys anything Capcom has made of late, but Konami also has yet to push out a great game of their other main franchises. A.K.A. TMNT and Castlevania. But the new Castlevania games announced show great promise, so that will be taken of the list very quickly hopefully.

Let's compare genres to find out the answer!

Quirky titles, or Other category because I'm too lazy to find something else these have in common:

Capcom - Viewtiful Joe

winner - Capcom

Results:

Konami - 4

Capcom - 4

It's a tie!

Nah. Street Fighter 2 all by itself makes Capcom better than Konami. Forget all of that.

Capcom, IMO.

They do milk their series', but they also make a TON of new franchises.

Devil May Cry
Viewtiful Joe
Tekki
Okami
Auto Modellista
Onimusha
P.N. 03
Killer 7
Chaos Legion
Maximo
Powerstone
Monster Hunter

True, some are hit and miss (Auto Modellista) but they are definitely willing to try new stuff. You name me some other developer that has made that many original franchises this generation.

namco was the best 3rd party developer this gen.

as far as Capcom vs. Konami goes...well, as far this gen goes, im gonna give it Capcom just by a tiny little bit. mainly because of Clover stuff.

100% agreed. Overall, Namco's been better than Nintendo even imo this generation. They're like the anti-Sega. :)
