Castlevania:DoS is a broken mess.

StoOgE

First tragedy, then farce.
I just got this game about a week ago and have been playing it off and on sense then. LTTP, I know...

first let me say I enjoy the metroidvania style games, that isnt my complaint at all. Backtracking doesnt bug me.. I really do like the soul collection bits of the game to gain power, the magic bar and all of that stuff. I think its kept the series fresh.

At this point I'm most of the way through the game (I checked a walkthrough to see how much further I have left to decide if Im going to try and finish the game or sell it).

There are a few problems I have with the game, but the main one is this:

There is an enemy that apears about halfway through the game ( I think its an imp, its one of those tiny flying demon varities) that has an attack (which I actually think is a bug) that causes your charachter to flip out and act as though you were just smashing the attack button. The only way out of this predicament that Ive found is to smash every button on the DS like mad until it "unlocks". The problem is there are normally about 5 of the damn things in the room as well as a shitload of medusa heads which turn you to stone for a period of time. So, but the time I get out of the grasp of the stupid thing Im right back in it.

I have to get through a room filled with these things to get back to the part of the castle I need to be in, but every time I go to the room it starts doing this, then I get pissed off and just turn the game off and come back a few hours later for the same result.

Am I going crazy or has someone else run into this shit? Its literally made me want to stop playing a game I was really enjoying to this point.

Lol. That was intended. The Imp is "controlling" you for a few seconds.

Protip. Kill it before it touches you.

You mean you're supposed to kill enemies to stop them from harming or otherwise negatively affecting your character? SOUNDS BROKEN TO ME.

It actually makes it worse that someone thought that was a good gameplay design. Its absolutely shit. I can understand if it happened for a few seconds, but it goes on for far too long.

:lol :lol

1)It's not a bug.

2)This isn't the first metroidvania that enemy has been in. As a fan of the games you should be familiar.

3) The room isn't that difficult. Suck it up.

Greater incentive for not getting hit by 'em. :D

That room... First tragedy, then farce. :lol :lol :lol

Hmm.. I just redid the room not using the axe and its wasnt at all hard. I hadnt considered the possibility that my weapon having a very small attack area could be the issue. My doppelganger has the gun attached to it, so that doenst help anything either.

*shakes head*

There's a reason why weapons are broken down into categories that have different attack rates, arcs, trajectories, etc... By the way, this isn't the first Castlevania to feature these kinds of weapons either.

So maybe it's not the game that's broken, but rather your ability to play games that is broken.

Yes, but when I chose my weapon I go by two things:

1) What looks cool (thus the handgun)

2) Which one makes my attack number the biggest (thus the axe)

To be fair, of the metroidvania games Ive only extensively played SoTN. I have one of the GBA games, but never bothered to play much of it for whatever reason. I threw that "I dont hate metroidvania" comment in there as a general disclaimer that this wasnt a metroidvania hating thread.

Live and learn. This isn't an RPG where the greatest attack rating rules all. This CV game in particular is perhaps the most refined in how the weapons were conceived and arranged.

I went through most of DoS with just axes and the huge swords. :D

Yes they're slow, but I couldn't go back to the weaker weapons after using them.

Dawn of Sorrow... my favorite DS game so far :) ... BTW, Longinus FTW!

Just now I was finishing Aria of Sorrow again...
I've been hearing CV music all the weekend, specially the old school ones... Bloody Tears, Vampire Killer, Wicked Child, Theme of Simon, The Beginning... you name it...

So an enemy that has a consequence to coming in contact with it makes the game broken? The only thing broken is your 360.

Oh, SNAP!

Oh shit, that's low.

Someone sucks at videogames and is calling it a "flaw".

It reminds me of my friend's hatred for the Zelda series "because of that damn beeping noise when you're low on health".

In both cases, the solution is: "Maybe you should play better?"

HAHAHAHAHA you suck man. WTF :lol

Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow is beautiful. Absolutely perfect.

Go play with legos or something. Oh wait, you have to build stuff. That may be hard for you.

Yes, that's a characteristic I like, too, as it asks the gamer to use some strategy in addition to just looking at the numbers. In fairness, though, quite a few other RPGs make it worthwhile to consider weapon choices beyond just the one with the highest attack number. I'm currently playing Eternia on the PSP right now, and it's interesting how infrequently you find a weapon for Reid that'll increase all of his attack-relevant stats across the board. Lances kill his slash and axes kill his thrust, and a lot of the more powerful swords tank his evasion and accuracy. That's the same thing in Dawn of Sorrow -- weapon attack patterns matter in addition to the numbers.

Though the SOTN-style CVs are action RPGs, by the way.

True, but I've played Eternia, and your weapon choices in that game weren't nearly as crucial as they were in SOME parts of DoS.

I meant to put a coma after 'RPG', that is. Didn't mean to imply that DoS is an RPG, only that it wasn't a game like most RPGs where the best weapon choice is usually the strongest.

Ah, gotcha. Pesky commas and how they can totally change the meaning of things. In that case, just replace my original reply to your post with a "QFT" or something.

:D

This thread is done (though the mocking may not be), so I don't feel bad in derailing.

I just got a nice bonus at work and plan on importing BoF3 and ToE for the PSP. Do you know if they'll play on a 1.5 PSP? The list of games I own (or will soon own) but cannot play because I refuse to upgrade is f-cking huge.

ToE will, but BoF3 won't.

I'm not sure if they play on 1.5. I think mine was 2 (or something) when I played them, and they worked on that.

Just a caution on BOF3: the game's load times are absolutely atrocious. It takes at least six + seconds to load pre and post every single battle. I was just disgusted when I encountered this.

Thanks for the responses, folks. I'm more interested in ToE. I fucking hated BoF3 when I bought it for the PSOne, but as some GBA games have proven to me, when it comes to handheld RPGs, I seem to have looser expectations. I shall proceed with the import. :D

Recommended import site? I believe Amazon UK is out, right?

didn't have a problem with that. You need to get better with soul selection + playing games then to complain about this.

Here's some tips, don't worry about weapons just go with what you think is cool and strong as long as you can use it well. Weapon stats and speed really mean very little in these games as long as you use them correctly. Although there are some weapons that do just suck or are extremely hard to use effectively. Generally anything that is very fast or very very slow aren't worth it, ever. Don't touch ranged weapons either, you have souls for that. If anything, the most important thing about a weapon you need to know is ithe range and recovery rate. Nothing else really matters.

As for the imps, a nice trick is to bait them. Well it's been a while since I've played but I think you can bait them. Charging at them won't work as they always have the upper hand until you get a few other souls to help you out. So just let them come at you, dodge, and take them out. If you want to kill them quick though, you just have to get used to those double jumps and lengthen the stride of your jump so you gain on them so your weapon hits.

Yeah I really dumbed it down but blah. :P

Come on!

Yeah I started to see my life bar go down on that game, so I promptly ripped the cartridge out of the system and destroyed everything with a sledgehammer. Man what were the developers thinking?

:lol :lol :lol

I cannot believe that some people think this is a bug. What the fuck? The only way you get that impression is if you assume it must be a bug. It's no more sane than assuming getting knocked back when you get hit by an enemy is a bug.

hay guyz i wuz playin Half-Life 2 and an enemy hit me a bunch of times and then i died and couldn't control my character no more why is this game such a broken mess?

I rented BoF3 for PSOne years ago and lost interest after an hour.
But now on PSP I find it to be very fun and tolerable.

I thought it was a glitch too :\ Luckily it only happened a couple of times.

The game definitely does have some glitches though (I think). There were a few times I got stuck in tiny crevices either by sliding or using the puppet.
