Castlevania DS pics

*Do not* judge anything by screens. Cause I too was thinking it looks like another GBA CastleVania game. Then I saw the video, the bosses encounters alone tell you that its more than that. Plus the game looks to be pushing a larger number of enemies on screen now.

Oh, and the animation is fantastic! I never want 2D to die. I want to play interactive paintings!

I believe I praised RE4 on here somewhere... If I didn't, well, RE4 rocks.

EDIT:

Oh I get it now, you're Wallachia. :lol
CV is fucking dead, dude. Sorry.

dammit, you got me! shit.. all my positive hype over the past 3 years has affected CV sales so much, that they keep making them. eat me beeyaaatch!

I'm surprised by the bad character art. AoS featured some of their finest. Still, the game (in the video) looks FUCKING BRILLIANT.

AoS was, perhaps, my favorite CV game, and this looks to trump them all, handily. I honestly didn't expect (though I did hope) that we'd get something that could even approach SotN this early in the DS's life. I figured maybe by the 2nd or 3rd DS CV game.

And oh g-d, the music... :) :) :)

I've never played a Castlevania before, but I think I'll make this one my first. That video totally sold me! DS is getting some fantastic games!!!

O.M.F.G!!!!! I'm really, really glad my brother picked up a DS!!

After seeing this, I really want a Rondo of Blood DS port/remake/whatever.

Looks nice, the art is really generic though.
Just saw the video, and it looks great...I especially like the music. Sounded like a very noticable step forward compared to the GBA versions. I'm sure the game will be good, hopefully it will feel refreshing enough to play as well. After three GBA Castlevanias, I felt kind of burned out actually (on the actual concept that is). Even though they are good games, especially AoS.

Interactive painting would be like playing the cutscenes in Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song...which I hope will become reality in the near future! :D

Oh man, :lol at the people who said this looked just like the GBA games. Though, to be perfectly frank, I'll guffaw at those who said the SCREENS looked similar, too. This should be amazing, I just wish it wasn't so far away.

I can't get the gamestop stream to work either. Headed to IGN I guess :/
Yep, IGN worked a treat. This game looks crazy good. But honestly, it looks too hard :lol I'm not sure I'm gonna be able to manage some of the moves they do.

After looking at the video I'm sort of dissapointed that Konami hasn't thought of doing a follow-up of SOTN on PS2 or even PS1. DS versions looks excellent but really I miss playing this type of stuff on a TV with a decent gamepad.

Looks alot better in those screens. Looks very fun overall.

Soras sprite looks abit iffy to me though, that i thought was one of the most misleading things in the earlier shots, i still think it looks abit crap now, but its as detailed as it can be i suppose.

That art is horrid though, looks like a saturday morning cartoon version of the previous art. Why did they even need to redo it? Theres alot of the same cast, i'd rather have higher res reused art then this stuff.

I can't see the vid till I get home in a couple hours. how does the control work? sounds like you need 3 hands?

I was sold long ago, but even more sold now. I'm getting a DS for this game, no matter what.

And who cares about the character designs? They're exactly the same as in AoS, just drawn in a simpler style. It's not like it will affect the quality of the game sprites or something.

I just hope that Soma portrait on the status screen is a placeholder. Really, how long would it take for Kojima to draw up something for the status screen?

I don't understand. CoD's is considerably better. But don't we do as much as see the drawings in one or two threads and then spend the rest of our time actually playing the games?

Bah, don't demean yourselves clinging to some placeholder art hope. Bitch about it enough and maybe it'll get changed, but right now, I think they're going with this.

Looks great, good music. I hope they put some interesting puzzles in with the blocks you can destroy with the touchscreen. Should be easy enough to set up scenarios where you have to work out specific blocks to remove to progress.

AWESOME!!!

Did you guys see that move where he basically threw a little item up to a high spot and then would teleport to that item to get up there? That was soo cool. Looks like double-jumps and slides won't be the only abilities you can learn for a change. :D

I'm so pumped over this game. This is why I bought my DS ealier this month. I'm playing Aria of Sorrow right now and while I was really loving it, I don't know if I can look at it the same way after seeing those videos. Fucking unbelievable. This is the return to form we've been waiting 8 years for.

But we'll be seeing that status screen a lot, which is why it's the only piece of art I give a shit about really.

Yes, it is a false hope. But it would be awesome.

I think we've already seen a simple ice block puzzle, the player just didn't do it right. It was the first ice scene in the video. Looking at screenshots, you can see that same room is very early in the map; I'll assume you don't have a double jump yet. So removing all of the blocks would not allow you to get past that pillar, you would have to create a staircase using the blocks.

Of course, if you do start with the double jump all that is moot.

A few thoughts:

+ Game still looks awesome
+ Animations are great
+ Boss looked badass

- Whoever is playing the game needs to be shot, especially the boss video
- Gamespot's video encoding sucks donkey nads

-/+ Magic Sealing still looks retarded, but at least it's fast and seamless.

Thankyou thankyou!! Wario64!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

This is why even though I love the PSP hardware and I know Nintendo is coming out with a Game Boy Next probably in 2006, I must have a DS also.

I just could not be without Mario Kart DS, Castlevania, Advance Wars DS, or Final Fantasy III.

Now they just need to announce an F-Zero or Star Fox game for the DS and I'm set.

I think SOTN is the best PSX game of all, but the one gripe I have with it and the GBA spiritual sequels is that the game gets so damn easy around the midway point. I really hope this version can address that lone flaw.

Other than that, these look amazing. I am so pleased that this one hasn't been screwed up. I Love that "shadow shift" move that he uses in Gamespot movie #1 to get through obstacles and behind enemies. I can't wait to try that out!

I would like to personally thank all the GAF members who took the time out of their day to point out how the character art sucks. Because, like, you know, it's so important in a handheld 2D Castlevania game.

Cuz the past 5 or 6 Castlevanias (at least) were NOT known for their highly detailed and aesthetically unique artwork.

Let me add one thing, character art sucks.

Wasn't it for ya ?

Note I wrote "character art." Yes, the aesthetics of the game are very important. The high-res cartoon drawings that Konami PR sent out are not.

I think you and I agree.

Jeez, this thread has twice the views and posts of the new PS2 Castlevania's thread... I guess the people have voted and they want Metroidvania!

We don't. I like high-res anime artwork that Konami puts out for their CV games. I like it alot. THIS, sucks ass. And I'm not used to that. Worse yet, since the recent trend is to make in-game portraits resemble the official artwork as much as possible, seeing Soma's new and hideous style when navigating the inventory or in conversations isn't a particularly appealing thing either.

That's fine. You're a fan of the artwork that Konami distributes. I like a lot of it, too.

My problem with this thread is that it doesn't take an art major to figure out that the character images suck, yet for three pages we have GAFfers pointing it out. Personally, I think it's quite silly since those PR sketches have nothing to do with the actual game. If there was in-game anime movies or something, that'd be a different story.

So Mejilan, you really think Soma's portrait is "hideous?" Come on, it's not that bad:

I'd like to quantify my statement on the artwork. I was mainly complaining about Soma's portrait in game. Yes, it is that important, at least enough to complain about it in a relatively unimportant thread on an internet message board. :P

For instance, I wouldn't complain about it in an actual review. But this is GAF. :P
