damn, looks pretty bad to me. i also never played one of these games... or even heard of them before GAF, despite gaming since Atari.

Is it ok if I have NO FUCKING CLUE what is going on in those screens?

I hadn't until AoS either. you, like me, have been missing out.

Yeah, what's up with that? Are they gonna make an anime or something?

Doubt it, IGA just said a new artist is working on the game to appeal to a "broader" demographic for the DS.

BEHOLD! THE POWER OF THE DS!

... That Anime look is really turning me off from the game... Ayami Kojima should have done the art

Castlevania = Metroid with Vampires. Same mechanic (bossess, upgrades), same backtracking etc.

I can't believe there are THREE of you that haven't played a CV game EVER. Shame on you - these games rock.

WTF?!

GAF is on WTF alert?

How have you not ever played a Castlevania game before. They were REALLY popular in the NES and SNES days.

Then there was the "top ten greates PSX" game ever made which was Castlevania SoTN. And finally we had strong GBA showings like Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow, with this come to wrap it up....

Tch tch...

EDIT: And to the people complaining about the graphics....

this is a DS game, not an Xbox 360 one....just to remind you people.

GEEZ! What's wrong with you people?!... if you're going to start playing CV games start with Symphony of the Night for PSX, it's a MUST PLAY!

Awesome that army salesman is back.

i get a mad 80's anime vibe from this games art and if i hadn't been in the middle of watching a load of old anime right now i probably would hate it, but right now i think it look cool.

The knee high ugg boots look a little weird in the second shot, though the rest of it look good.

No excuses here...

So all in all,I suck at life. :(

i don't mind the anime art. granted, i love high quality castlevania art, but i do miss the days when high quality games had cartoon looking art.

nostalgia for you i guess. dunno, it just takes me back i guess.

you know what it is, i think it's just that the dude on the left looks like he came from GI Joe, and that alone makes me like the style i guess.

I think these screens look good, the hugeness of them confuses me though.

That art..WTF? Nevertheless, Playgear'd!

They would look good if they weren't blown up in size so much. They just look pixellated and sloppy, IMO

Shown at native resolution I bet they look a lot better though. At least these pics show a bit of potential of what to expect

Game looks great, the art..... oh my god... seriously, did they have to dig up the worst anime-style artist they could? -_-

Hey, that's exactly what I thought. The style is certainly more universally appealing (= not at all appealing to hardcore fanboys like duckroll), which is obviously the goal here.

I'm having difficulty seeing what aspect of the main character makes him look masculine.

It is supposed to be a guy, right? I look at it and it looks like some bizarre female anime-thing.

Funny, as i was scrolling down the page and saw Soma, i realized just how much my perceptions of masculinity had changed from watching anime. But then again, as best i can remember the Japanese art for the Castlevania series has always featured bishounen protagonists.

And i've played Castlevania before, and i'm pretty sure i liked the second two on NES (don't remember the first), and i was wowwed by Super Castlevania (Mode 7 + awesome sound), but honestly, i can't get into the series now. i tried playing Aria of Sorrow, and an hour later put it down because i just couldn't get into it. Metroid with vampires is an analogy good enough, but i prefer the constant run and gun gameplay of Metroid (and Mega Man) to CV's run-slash-run gameplay.

Take that!

The status screen always being there seems distracting.

Any idea which Metroidy-Castlevania this one is supposed to play like?

This is the first Castlevania I am not going to purchase. It looks bad and identical to AOS. AOS looked awesome considering it was running on a GBA but I think that DS should have allowed them to play a bit more with parallax and simultaneous scrolling backgrounds.
The lack of dedication KCET has put to this game is evident: from my graphical complaints to the fucked up anime style instead of Ayami Kojima's artwork.

Well, it is. It features awesome graphics (although sometimes they are pretty simple background wise) and a superb soundtrack. The story is also great and well...characters are pretty cool (Richter power !).

People tend to say it is the best vania after SOTN but allow me to say it isn't. Castlevania IV is better. Keep in mind that Chi No Rondo is a traditional Castlevania so it had little chances to beat the best "traditional" Castlevania :)

That aside is an awesome game with a superb presentation (tops SOTN).

Yeah, the OST is nice..but 4 is better? Hmm (I still prefer the original style to the Metroidy ones, though)..and the SNES version is *stay away* compared?

Vampire Killer (SNES version) is always said to be pure crap...Of course it is if you compare it with Chi No Rondo considering it a port...

I played the SNES one first and I was amazed. It's a pretty good game...IMHO it was better than HoTD or COTM despite the different style.
Vampire Killer features cool graphics and the music is awesome. I don't know why all the hate. Because Chi No rondo was better ? Stupid...
Vampire Killer is a decent Castlevania and to all those who call it a port I would like them to put some glasses on their eyes because the game is a lot different (level design wise for instance).
