Cauliflower Rice?

I didn't know this was a thing. Watched a short report about its growing popularity..

https://youtu.be/q7ja44iJ_LM

Seems some folks are taking issue with the word "rice" being involved, claiming its deceitful and can confuse costumers.

Now, the rice lobby is taking issue with cauliflower “rice” – the popular low-carb and grain-free alternative to traditional rice gaining popularity among certain diets like paleo and Whole30. While it’s easy to make this at home with a head of cauliflower, stores including Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods have begun selling the shredded cauliflower using the word “rice” on the packaging.

“Only rice is rice, and calling ‘riced vegetables’ ‘rice,’ is misleading and confusing to consumers,” Betsy Ward, president of industry lobby USA Rice, said in a recent statement. “We may be asking the Food and Drug Administration and other regulatory agencies to look at this.”

So, what do y'all think? Ever had this stuff? Is it any good? Do you think it foul to call this "rice" or almonds "milk" in your book?

Discuss..

I mean, it's not rice. They probably shouldn't actually call it rice.

I've had it. It works fine. Like rice, it doesn't have a strong flavor and absorbs sauces really well, so it's a good substitute in a lot of things.

I've made it before. I like it but i like 'normal' califlower too so

Seasoning it will go a long way to improve the taste, obiously.

It serves a purpose as being a base for dishes, but it's nothing close to rice given it's strong flavor. I like cauliflower mash much more.

I fuck with it. It still has cauliflower in the name (also ingredients) so no one who can read should be confused. Seems like a good substitute.

Yes, I’ve had it. It’s... eh. Not good not bad. I wouldn’t go out of my way to get it but I wouldn’t be upset or probably even notice if it was used in a dish without being told.

No

There are plenty of really great ways to make cauliflower. This is not one of them.

NOPE. It's amazing. You probably don't cook it with enough sauces/seasonings or something. Whenever I make it I make sure when it's simmering to mix in an egg and peppers and it absorbs that and tastes delicious. Just make sure you keep stirring it or the egg will just scramble

I've made it, it's not that nice imo and I don't have a dishwasher so the little cauliflower grains are a pain to clean up afterwards.

This rice lobby thing is daft though.

My wife just made some the other night for dinner. I don't really like cauliflower, but it just took on the flavor of the curry we had.

Do packages say rice cauliflower or riced cauliflower? Rice, sure, maybe an issue.

Riced? I'm not sure how that could be an issue given it would be a verb here. It's a specific type of process being used to, well, process a food.

My wife and I are on a keto diet. We use a lot of cauliflower rice. It's fine. Biggest issue is it doesn't soak up things like normal rice does.

I make it regularly, and it's delicious. Here's a side-by-side comparison with the real deal.

So, it's like the Shirataki noodles? Basically soaks up whatever you mix it up with?

Ahhh, I see. I've never actually had cauliflower, and was considering giving this "rice" a try..

o_O

The rice is nice. Mashed cauliflower is nice too.

Roasted cauliflower with hot sauce == <3 <3 <3 <3 for me.

edit: i used to hate it as a kid cause my mom didn't put any seasonings on it. Then gave it a try when i started living by myself and it's one of my favorite vegetables now. Same with broccolli.

I haven't had it, but cauliflower seems to be one of the primary replacements for carbs in most low-carb diets. Stuff is good, but finely chopped cauliflower isn't "riced" which, even if it does look similar to cooked white rice. Get another word.

Yup, it's a great and healthy replacement for regular carb filled rice. I use all forms of cauliflower regularly and I will never go back.

I wonder why the dairy lobby has been unsuccessful getting Almond Milk renamed. Almond Milk is just mashed up almonds and water. Should be called Almond water

Cauliflower rice is great! I mean, rice is delish, but cauliflower rice has its own thing going for it.

Also, if almond milk can be considered "milk," then I don't see the problem with the name cauliflower rice.

Yeah, seems they just want the word "rice" not to be used period..

Hmmm..Might just grab a small package and check it out for myself. Expensive?

Its delicious, GF just started buying this other day. Not sure of the price but its a great keto-friendly substitute.

Cauliflower in general is a great replacement for most carbs. For example, garlic mashed cauliflower is soooooooo good. Just a tad bit sweeter and creamier though, but you can probably minimize that by adding a bit of flower or more salt? idk.

Either way my point is that I recommend it.

shut up, rice council. you don't care about rice purity at all. there's a kitchen tool called a ricer and you never gave a shit until something was making money.

I've never seen it in a package. If you have a blender and a cauliflower you can just make it yourself. Put the cauliflower in the blender. Add some water. Blitz. Put in oven for a while.

I make it myself!

Ingredients:
- 1 head of cauliflower (about 2 pounds)
- 2 Tbsp. bacon fat/lard or tallow
- 1/2 small white onion, chopped (about 1/2 cup)
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1/4 tsp. sea salt
- 1/8 tsp. ground black pepper
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Directions:
1. Chop the cauliflower into florets. Working in batches, pulse a few florets at a time in a food processor or blender until the cauliflower pieces are the size and shape of rice (be careful not to over-blend!). Set the riced cauliflower aside.
2. Heat the bacon fat/lard or tallow in a large skillet over medium high heat. Sauté onion and garlic for about 3 minutes or until the onions are just softened. Add the riced cauliflower and stir well.
4. Add the sea salt and pepper and stir to combine. Saute for about 5 minutes or until the cauliflower is slightly tender but not mushy.
5. Place the cauliflower in serving bowl and toss with the freshly chopped parsley. Taste and add additional sea saltand pepper if desired. Serve and enjoy!

Cauliflower rice is disgusting. I've made it myself as well as tried restaurant/prepackaged varieties, but it's always awful, with a terrible flavor and texture, not to mention moisture (even in Trader Joe's cauliflower pizza crust).

Unless you really want something that looks like rice but can't have actual grain products (quinoa is delicious), I can't recommend cauliflower rice/crust. There are also far better ways to eat cauliflower (e.g., grilled).

Didn't know this was a thing.... well I love Cauliflower so I could see this going well as an Ingredient in some dishes. Also fun fact Riced isnt a verb but Rice is as it is the action you do when you use a ricer.

My first instinct is to always go against anything said by a lobbyist. Fuck the rice industry.

I do think that labeling things like this is bad though. I don't care about the rice industry's profit margin but I do care about consumers being misled about the products they are buying. It at least needs to be called cauliflower rice SUBSTITUTE or something like that.

I have always been tripped out by the need to make fake versions of food items though. Like why the fuck do vegetarians need tofurky? Just have some fucking tofu! Do you hate animals so much that you need to make little fucking effigies out of your food? Of course not so why all the "fake" meat?

I was a vegetarian for a few years of my life and definitely ate my share of fake meat but only because it was readily available and easy protein. Never had a fucking tofurky though.

Cauliflower is crazy expensive compared to rice. Plus, you can do more with rice: Mexican rice, middle Eastern rice, white rice, rice and beans, etc...
