Was getting caught part of your plan?
Peter Mansbridge — the veteran CBC News anchor whose deep, authoritative voice has been informing Canadians of the day's top stories, broadcasting into their living rooms each night for decades — is retiring as anchor of The National.

Mansbridge, 68, has announced that he plans to step down from the helm of CBC's flagship show next summer, after anchoring special Canada Day coverage on July 1, when the country will mark its 150th birthday.

"It's been an amazing time to report our history, but I've decided that this year will be my last one," Mansbridge told viewers Monday night. "As someone who believes strongly in public broadcasting, leaving the CBC's flagship will not be easy. But what's important is that The National of the future will continue to reflect our world, our country and our people."

Mansbridge's storied career has spanned nearly five decades, including 28 years at the helm of the desk as anchor and chief correspondent. It's a role that has seen him broadcast from all corners of Canada and various hotspots around the world.

He has covered 14 federal elections, hosted eight Olympic ceremonies and conducted an estimated 15,000 interviews, sitting opposite countless Canadian and global leaders, along with numerous personalities from the worlds of politics, sports and entertainment.

End of an era, CanadaGAF.

I fear who CBC will replace him with...anyone but this guy:

It will be Wendy Mesley, but who knows nowadays.

It truly is the end of an era. He had a great run, too, and seems like a really good guy. He'll be missed.

I'm more of a CTV news guy, if anything. The National often bored me, but I've started to like it a bit more.

Congrats on a great career, Peter.

I never thought I'd see the day, I almost forget he's a real person and not a character sometimes with how eternally linked he is to the CBC in my mind.

Peter Mansbridge will be missed, his interviews were great and he was always objective and unbiased. A true pro

Thanks for watching

Damn, end of an era.

I'm guessing Wendy Mesley is the successor, but I think Rosemary Barton would do a great job.

Damn, didn't think I'd ever read that headline.

Mansbridge is one of the good ones. Hell, one of the best Canadian journalism has to offer.

Bummed. I like watching him and he handles round table talks incredibly well. Hope CBC finds a good replacement, their news coverage is really great to watch.

I feel all bummed out now, even though I knew he couldn't go on forever. Peter Mansbridge is THE face of CBC for me, and it is clear he loved his job. He always tried to be as unbiased as possible when reporting which feels like its a rarity when it comes to news nowadays. It will be hard for CBC to replace him, he is truly amazing.

Truly an end of an era for the CBC.

I would assume it will be Ian Hanomansing -- although replacing Mansbridge with Mesley, his ex-wife, would be funny.

Never been a fan of Mansbridge (didn't dislike him eithet) but he's been a staple at home since I don't even remember how long. Basically my whole life.

He's been anchor The National on CBC longer than I've been alive.

I'm 27....

He will be missed that's for sure.

God speed Mr. Mansbridge. He served as such a core of my TV experience when I became interested in the evening news. I agree Ian Hanomansing would be the most likely candidate. Whatever the future holds, long live the CBC!
