Cell Processor to Run at 4.6 Ghz

wait when youguys say "shared" memory architecture are you talking about NUMA or Unified memory? Numa is great yes, im not so sure about having unified memory though. I wonder what kind of bus/transport system the cell will use. This thing would smoke with infiniband.

Duckhuntdog, not all the specs for XBOX2 are locked down yet, although they will be soon also read Panajev posts, although the PS3 will certaintly have the edge with regard to Gflops ratings the Xbox2 may well stronger in other areas. Shapankey, thats a question I put to both Panajev and DeanoC and both gave quite complex answers but if you look at Panajev post in this thread, it tends to point to everything being very similar. This is why I think MS is comfortable releasing before PS3 in the US and Europe they also seem to think that graphically there will little or no difference. judging on the great posts from Panajev and others its almost certain now that differences will minimal.

Oh, my friend. I have it on VERY good authority that the specs are pretty much locked down. So much so that a final case design has been chosen. :D

look how well the Gamecube can hold it's own against the significantly more powerful (on paper) Xbox.

the difference between Xbox2 and PS3 will be smaller. thus, very little difference in the results on screen, i think. the amount of memory is also going to be very close between the two platforms 256-512 MB plus eDRAM. PS3 will probably have more eDRAM, but at least Xbox2 will most likely have *some*

i know this is a very dumb and generalized question, but if you had to completely guess, do you think there will be a very big difference in graphic quality next gen? or will it be like this gen, where it's pretty small? i know it all matters on this and that, but i'm just wondering what you think might happen or whatever. i certainly of course wouldn't hold anyone to anything as it would be pure guesswork.

p.s. you and guys like you in here are just insanely brilliant heh. wish i had those kind of brains.

it's looking like the differences between the three major nextgen platforms will be smaller than the differences between PS2-GCN-XBox. but then there could be a few surprises. i think the major differences will be in control interface (Nintendo Rev could be radical compared to Xbox2 which looks to be just another control pad based console)

To clarify, I was speaking within the context of the IBM PPC and the x86 CPU manufactured by Intel and AMD. Within that context, generally speaking, the RISC architecture runs hotter than the CISC architecture.

I do not think it is true even then... compare a processor like Prescott to a PowerPC 970 or a PowerPC 440, etc...

The difference might be small, in most games people will use middleware which will minimize the graphical differences between the two platforms. Where I expect to see the leap is against PC's... CPU wise, interconnects' speed wise (I/O busses), memory bandwidth wise should show quite a massive leap.

Ask this question again after ISSCC and after GDC, if we can get a hand on nice papers :).

Sweet... thanks you two.
