We have hired a new CEO to lead Discord through our next chapter of growth and someday becoming a public company. I am thrilled to share that Humam Sakhnini will take on this role, and I will continue as a member of our Board of Directors and Advisor to the CEO.

So I am thrilled to welcome Humam Sakhnini as the next CEO of Discord.

After spending significant time together, I have complete confidence in his ability to lead us into the future alongside Stan and the rest of our executive team. Humam brings more than 15 years of experience in the gaming industry, including at Activision Blizzard where he served as Chief Strategy Officer helping guide franchises like World of Warcraft and Call of Duty. He later took over from the founders of King to delight the players of their live service games while substantially growing the King business in the public market.

Welp time to find the next new free place. They'll probably make basic shit paid and think that because they have spent such a long time free people have integrated so much into the discord ecosystem they'll just pay what they're told out of convenience.

I miss read the name and was like
"It's weird that they have to specify that he is a human when introducing him"

Oh boy, is this the beginning of the end for Discord?

Going public is gonna be the kiss of death.

Pretty much.
Time for another platform to show up.

I'm not concerned, because when Discord dies, something else will take its place. Shame though, Discord has been pretty great.

I loathe Discord, piece of shit software that only rivals Teams in terms of stability.
And their scammy subscription plans to get basic features, bleh, I hope another actor emerges.

GenZ-ers wanted something similar to forums and message boards, but faster-updating, and with the same social features as Skype/Whatsapp.
Actually it's quite the opposite for me. The visual design and functionality are really poor, a problem I also find with platforms like Teams and even Reddit. Honestly, what's with these awful designs? Shouldn't a gaming-related app, of all things, prioritize a better user experience and aesthetic?

I never understood the need for Discord. I'm being absolutely serious.

It's damn awesome. You can use Discord's APIs and webhooks to do all kinds of awesome stuff. From hosting your own games library / store, to hooking channels up to generative AI services etc. I've got my home monitoring services hooked into Discord as another example. Slack is great too if you fully take advantage of the many integrations available.

That's because the UI has become worse over the past 4 or so years, as the devs kept adding "value-adding functions" of dubious actual utility. Reddit's interface has become shittier in roughly the same timeframe.

Everyone I know would uninstall Discord if Valve overhauled Steam Chat to make it a pinch more usable.

We use it at work as the least shitty Slack alternative.
Yep, same here, Slack was slow and blocking archived messages for free users at some point ended up being the breaking point.

I also use it in my private time to be a part of several smaller communities. Definitely an easier choice than trying to run your own message board.
