CF STEM CELL LINE PRODUCED!!!

CF Stem Cell

You would NOT believe how excited I was to run across this earlier today at school. I read, and read, and read, then came across this nugget:

We've had a couple of researchers from the US who have wanted to gain access to these cell lines, but they have been told by their universities: 'under no circumstances'

Thanks, W.

Yeah, it's wonderful. I sent the news to all my family members and doctors. Can't wait to hear their(doctors) opinions about this...

More power to you.

I wish you the best. I have asthma that's not terrible, but when I can't breathe I start to get scarred about it. I hope the research continues.

Sorry to hear that. How bad is your case (I assume like most other diseases the severity differs from case to case)

If I ever see GDub I will punch him for you over the stem cell ban.

note to FBI: This is sarcasm

I'd say mild, but definitely not on the up and up. Used to be I could go days or weeks without certain meds and there'd be no damaging effect. However, two days missed of antibiotics now and I'm feeling it...

And this is the exact reason why I support stem cell research in the US being legal. So many GOOD things could come of this. Why the hell must we not be allowed access to this?

The powerful lobby of the religious right. :(

George W. Bush's christian voting base.

Just don't overhype stem cells. People want results and many don't know how long it takes for research to become medication.

So I just have to wait a few years and I won't have to put up with your posts? Yeah.

Anyway, I give it another decade.

True.

But there must be a start at some point.

From the way the thread has been going, it almost looks like there is an imminent cure for CF. These cells, from what I understand, will be used mainly to better study CF, not directly lead to a solution of some kind.

I'm well aware of the implications. I'm THRILLED that a stem cell was even developed. As I said in my journal, anything concrete regarding treatments, or even a cure, is far, far away.

Yeah, I know, but I try not to forget when someone hazes me.

Both LS and I have been banned for lesser things than wishing death on each other.

Good luck LS, good news. I feel this Stem Cell thing might hurt America's pharmaceutical future. If we don't develop the treatments/cures, then our companies don't make any money. Lost money leeds to less innovation, it's a viscious cycle that might haunt that industry 20 years down the road.

Whoa, that's actually harsh. I'd ban you if I were a mod. Like seriously Sera, think about what you just said. And I mean, you're laughing about it. Jesus.

I had a rough night and posting in other threads lead me here. So, excuse me if I'm not in a very caring mood. I don't see anyone playing defense attorney when some talks harsh shit about me, and on the rare chance that they do, they get a shit parade, too. So, yeah.

Wow. Didn't know I meant so much to you. Why don't you gain some weight, apply some makeup, and leave the fucking computer you homely, arrogant, pretentious bitch.

Uh they are making PLENTY of money. A lot of it goes into marketing or pockets,etc..

I had a thead on this so i wont have to go over the details again:

I don't wish death on you. And find a post in the recent past, by me, talking "harsh shit" about you.

IIRC, I was banned for calling you "a stupid cunt," awhile back. I was banned.

Obviously, that was the greater offense.

Sorry for the thread derailment, guys. Let's get this back on course..

my ex works in the industry. I don't deny they are making tons of cash hand over foot. But, I'm just postulating on the future of the industry.

A cynic might claim that the industry actually doesn't WANT stem cells or cures of any kind. But just because the US doesn't want SC research doesn't mean that other countries are going to follow our lead obviously. The money made by treatments from SC research will most likely be vast, and it would seem to be in the industries best interests to be involved. Who knows.

Thankfully, other countries don't follow our lead concerning the research of stem cells.

If there is actually a cure/treatment...I'm sure you'd be willing to travel overseas for it, right?

Get shinobi to tape the skin's games for you. He probably won't want to watch anyway, so he'll just leave his VCR running while he cries in a corner.

As a republican I am firmly behind you in this assertion. Of course, I have no real problem with abortion, and the issues are sort of hand in hand.

If other companies from other nations develop stem cell solutions, then they will make money off it and will be able to develop more drugs. I don't think it will matter much in the grand scheme of things if another country develops the drugs. If the solutions are affordable and effective, it shouldn't matter who makes the money off it.

Also, stem cells aren't going to be used for everything and other medicines will probably do fine. When the drug companies are low on money, maybe then they will then really to find innovative solutions to problems instead of me-too drugs.

Hey HalfPast, don't listen to the bullshit some of these people are spouting, the medical research already done on stem cells is astounding, and that a treatment is probably closer then most of these people imagine. Hell, my mom didn't have a correctly functioning circulatory system about 3 years ago because some of her blood cells were royally fucked up on the genetic level, and basically had to restart the production of blood, which was done through a mixture of chemo and a stem cell transplant. I won't go into the specifics of the disease (mostly because it happens to about a dozen people in the US a year, and I can't remember the name of it), but it was fatal, and if my mom had gotten it 5 years earlier, she probably would have died.

Were those hematopoietic stem cells/progenitor cells?

Heh, I'm quite aware of the advances of stem cell therapy; I did a rather large research paper on the subject during the summer. That's great about your mother, though. The treatments derived from these cells already are pretty impressive in certain cases.

I'm gonna hope for great things with CF.

Hematopoietic. And no, it wasn't very cheap. Thankfully, my dad's company covered it after insurance denied it because it was highly experimental and had only been done twice before for the specific disease. She is actually in a couple of medical journals as "55 year old woman with insert long ass blood syndrome here ".

It might be special that your mother was one of the first to have this treatment, but theoretically it doesn't seem that special. First of all, hematopoietic stem cells have already differentiated to a certain degree and may be considered adult stem cells. Second of all, hematopoietic stem cells are pretty much expected to be able to differentiate into blood cells. It sounds like a souped up bone marrow transplant.

The debate is over embryonic stem cells which have the potential to differentiate into any cell type, not into relatively predetermined cell types in the case of HSC.

Yes if Serafitia had created some thread and Lonestar insulted her face for no reason whatsoever, I'm sure you would be defending his ban too. Don't take this personally, but you aren't exactly the pristine angel of objectivity in this particular case.
