I was wondering if anyone had any impressions of Chaos Field. It's out now, according to NCSX and a search drug up nothing in the ways of some good old-fashioned analysis. So, anyone pick this up?
There are quite a few different attacks, and the action gets so intense that it's sometimes hard to think of the right one to use.
But i really enjoy the challenge and the departure it takes (artistically and just the overall feel) from standard manic shmups.
I say pick it up.. With a bit more time spent on it, I might even place it among the DC's best shooters.
I've been considering picking up Chaos Field, but I'm not sure the concept of an extended sequence of boss fights holds up that well in execution, and the price of entry is pretty steep if it doesn't.
And I'm still trying to find a copy of Border Down for less than $85.
Yeah, BD isn't getting any cheaper, even (or especially) in Japan. I'd suggest biting the bullet (so to speak) and just getting it whenever it's available.
I paid 85 for the LE when it came out, and I'm glad I did.
VGD has been long out of stock on Border Down for months now, believe me, I know all the places to look. NCS has the limited edition for $85 now, not $75, and Play-Asia has (had?) the same for twice that. It rarely comes up on ebay too, at least in my checks.
So, as you can see, $85 is the cheapest entry point for Border Down at this point. I bought a Gamecube system for $15 more than that. I can probably buy Battle Garegga or most certainly Soukyugurentai on Saturn for less than that, and both of those games in general are seen by the shmup community as better than Border Down. So you can see, it's really not worth it to me unless I can find it for less than $85, as I said.
It's just all about what a game is worth to me as far as the cost/return scenario.
$85 will get me a nice evening out with my fianceé.
mine's in the mail. looks like a satisfying cross between rrootage and radiant silvergun. although from impressions elsewhere, i've gathered that the dc version doesn't save high scores. wtf. might want to wait for the gc version then.
i'd pay $85 for border down if i had to. hell, i'd go higher than that. and not because i'm insane or rich. i just think it's one of the few best horizontal shooters ever.

You'd be insane because you'd be paying $85 on principle for a game that recieved a tiny release, never in the west, and is easily downloaded. It's not like G-Rev is getting any money when you drop $85 for it on ebay. They've sold out their entire printing already.

it's true... the damn thing doesn't save high scores after you turn the DC off.
I personally don't think that's a huge deal.. if you want to try to be competitive, head to a high score thread (like in TNL's score attack forum), and post it there...
voila, it's saved..
One of the guys on the Shmup forum posted his own vid and it looks great. I mean, yeah it's just one concentrated boss encounter after another but at least it appears to be compelling and chock-full of intriguing patterns. The weapon systems look pretty fleshed too. I wish I had some dough...
