Many games suffer from the The Loser is You trope.
Tons and tons of games feature idiots as the protagonist.
If the protagonist isn't an idiot, the game frequently treats the player like an idiot and then has the protagonist narrate things all the time.

It would probably be tougher to find characters who are genuinely smart, and then can express that intelligence; since it means many members of the audience won't actually understand what's happening.

Half Life's characters come to mind. Immersive-sims frequently have high-level conversations. Plenty of indie games, as well.
Unfortunately, though, I find that most games trend toward the dumb-route; especially the AAA games.
