Chat Control, the EUs super bill to monitor the web

I guess everyone has just decided the back half of 2025 needs to be 1984! Chat Control is the EUs proposed bill to make it mandatory to require ID or face scans for the internet as well as actively scanning all your messages, whether it be e-mail, message apps, forum posts, etc, for "suspicious" content which can then be flagged to authorities. Here's a website covering all the major details:

  • All of your chat conversations and emails will be automatically searched for suspicious content. Nothing remains confidential or secret. There is no requirement of a court order or an initial suspicion for searching your messages. It occurs always and automatically.
  • If an algorithms classifies the content of a message as suspicious, your private or intimate photos may be viewed by staff and contractors of international corporations and police authorities. Also your private nude photos may be looked at by people not known to you, in whose hands your photos are not safe.
  • Flirts and sexting may be read by staff and contractors of international corporations and police authorities, because text recognition filters looking for "child grooming" frequently falsely flag intimate chats.
  • You can falsely be reported and investigated for allegedly disseminating child sexual exploitation material. Messaging and chat control algorithms are known to flag completely legal vacation photos of children on a beach, for example. According to Swiss federal police authorities, 80% of all machine-generated reports turn out to be without merit. Similarly in Ireland only 20% of NCMEC reports received in 2020 were confirmed as actual "child abuse material". Nearly 40% of all criminal investigation procedures initiated in Germany for "child pornography" target minors.
  • On your next trip overseas, you can expect big problems. Machine-generated reports on your communications may have been passed on to other countries, such as the USA, where there is no data privacy – with incalculable results.
  • Intelligence services and hackers may be able to spy on your private chats and emails. The door will be open for anyone with the technical means to read your messages if secure encryption is removed in order to be able to screen messages.
  • This is only the beginning. Once the technology for messaging and chat control has been established, it becomes very easy to use them for other purposes. And who guarantees that these incrimination machines will not be used in the future on our smart phones and laptops?
Age verification:

  • You can no longer set up anonymous e-mail or messenger accounts or chat anonymously without needing to present an ID or your face, making you identifiable and risking data leaks. This inhibits for instance sensitive chats related to sexuality, anonymous media communications with sources (e.g. whistleblowers) as well as political activity.
  • If you are under 16, you will no longer be able to install the following apps from the app store (reason given: risk of grooming): Messenger apps such as Whatsapp, Snapchat, Telegram or Twitter, social media apps such as Instagram, TikTok or Facebook, games such as FIFA, Minecraft, GTA, Call of Duty, Roblox, dating apps, video conferencing apps such as Zoom, Skype, Facetime.
  • If you don't use an appstore, compliance with the provider's minimum age will still be verified and enforced. If you are under the minimum age of 16 years you can no longer use Whatsapp due to the proposed age verification requirements; the same applies to the online functions of the game FIFA 23. If you are under 13 years old you'll no longer be able to use TikTok, Snapchat or Instagram.

My country was under the rule of a Fascist regime for over 40 years, it even had a political police to control what people said and wrote. Many people "vanished" due to this.
It's really sad seeing Europe falling back into fascism and authoritarianism.

More communism than fascism, they're against their own people.

More communism than fascism, they're against their own people.

There is a lot more in common with Fascism and Communism, than between either and Democracy.
People have the tendency of drawing political parties as if they are in a straight line, with the far left on one side, the far right on the other, and center parties and democracy on the middle.
But a more apt representation, though still a very simplified one, would be of a horse shoe. Extremist, be it in the left or the right have a lot more in common with each other.
They both use repression, force and violence against it's people to control dissent.

They will just ban the opposing parties anyways. But yeah if this goes through I'm willing to go to jail for. Enough with these ridiculous Orwellian laws.

I'm Polish. 77% of Poles support the EU. Year after year, we hand more power over to Berlin and Brussels, slowly losing our sovereignty... and people seem to love it.

Not a chance in hell this goes through. It's way too dystopian to be accepted by the general population.

I see we're all slowly becoming Chinese. Chinese games taking over the industry. Chinese laws next. Chinese women when?
Canada had a bill which had up to 17 years in jail for saying something that would be seen as offensive online, retroactively. (I don't even know how that could be legal to have retroactive fines, it's not like we can go back in time)

Most governments are are pro this, I don't think anybody asked general population about their opinions:

Motherfuckers in power don't care about normal people, this isn't some news...

I'm gonna give you some news: Google SPIES everything you do in your computer and mobile, including whatsapp, Discord and forums like this.

In my Youtube feed I get video suggestions of stuff I have discussed on whatsapp. Not sure about Telegram, though.

It's funny here in Berlin, there are constant protests against everything. At a quick glance, I couldn't find anything about CSAM protest.

Edit: ok no there was one.

Poland remain based. Very surprised to see Hungary are in favour.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't a country like Austria or Poland veto this out of existence.

I have no idea. Hungary vote is enough to block some sanctions on Russia but I don't know if the same applies here.

I also wonder if this is current stance of Polish government on this (center-left) or pre Q4 2023 government (center-right). Current one is very pro EU.

EU is one big bureaucratic monster.

But... I thought the EU was for the people! They were going to stop killing games and fight the evil corporations!

Oh, it turns out that having a massive bureaucracy of untouchable politicians and lawyers has some unintended consequences, who could have thought?

Yep, Google, Apple, MS all scan your cloud files for CSAM. Chat services as well. I don't have a problem with that since it's stuff going on their servers so you should understand it's not really private. Once it expands to "wrong think" it's going to be an issue. That meme on your one drive is offensive!

EU is not exactly needed to apply shit censoring the internet. Look at UK, Australia and even USA (youtube age verification, PH censorship in some states).

This goes so far beyond what Google has done. You would have to scan your ID just to post here or on X or anywhere. No anonymity, just full control of all messaging everywhere. Full on Gestapo mode on the entire Internet.

EU is one big bureaucratic monster.

And it will only get worse.

Some EU leaders and institutions have been advocating for treaty reform to
Replace unanimity (i.e., veto power) in areas like foreign policy and taxation, plus move to qualified majority voting where decisions are made based on population and number of states

This would reduce the ability of a single country to block EU-wide decisions, which has been a long-standing frustration for larger or more integrationist member states.

But of course it's not just the UK, it's EVERYWHERE.

Yeah, but as far as I understand this is still in "proposal" territory. We don't know if it will be implemented.

Yeah, it's getting bad. I think it's quite likely that 2027 elections in Poland will be won by right wing parties. Once EU fucks up too much I don't think we will stay in it for much longer.

At the same time, it's almost like western world is controlled by a group of people that force things like this...

The EU wants to become it's own country, which has always been it's modus operendi since it's inception. People shouldn't act suprised when their country has no actual power and is just a subdivision of the EU.

God willing. The EU today is not the same organization it was at its founding or when Poland joined in 2004. It must return to being an economic union or Poland should leave. What we have now is a Titanic on a collision course.

Correct. The end goal has always been for a United States of Europe and do away with individual European states.

I'm starting to wonder if something big is on the horizon with how all these countries and unions are suddenly moving at warp speed to lock down the internet and track everyone.

All this surveillance and you'll still get raped and murdered by muslims with impunity.
LMAO

It's worse than that. The police might then rape you as well.
This is what happened in the UK.

Five women who were exploited by grooming gangs in Rotherham as children say they were also abused by police officers in the town at the time.

One says she was raped from the age of 12 by a serving South Yorkshire Police (SYP) officer in a marked police car. He would threaten to hand her back to the gang if she did not comply, she says.

"In a world where you were being abused so much, being raped once [by a police officer] was a lot easier than multiple rapes [by the gang] and I think he knew that," she tells the BBC.

We have seen written accounts from these women, plus testimony from 25 other victims of grooming gangs, with some of those women saying that corrupt police officers worked alongside the gangs or failed to act on child sexual exploitation.
At least 1,400 children were abused by men in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013 - the landmark report from Prof Alexis Jay found in 2014.

"From the evidence we read and heard, the majority of victims identified their perpetrators as being of Pakistani heritage," Prof Jay told us.

A new criminal investigation into the involvement of police officers in the Rotherham grooming scandal is now being led by SYP's major crime unit, under the direction of the police watchdog.

The 30 witness accounts seen by the BBC detail shocking allegations:
  • Years of abuse from serving police officers, from the mid-90s to early 2000s, at the same time as being exploited by Rotherham grooming gangs
  • Most alleged victims were in their teens but some were as young as 11
  • One woman says as a child she would hear a police officer having sex with girls in exchange for drugs and money
  • Another woman says as a child she witnessed a police officer supplying illegal class A drugs to a grooming gang
  • Three women describe being beaten up by officers as children - one says this happened in a police cell

Holy shit. Brits, y'all shouldn't have to put up with that.

This is why I say these laws are not to protect children. The government, the police, the social services, none cared about the thousands of little girls being raped.
In fact, these laws will serve to hide these crimes and protect these criminals.

When I was little I wanted to go to Europe, especially the UK.

I don't anymore. I can see Pakistanis and Indians just fine from my shithole here at home. But my family can trace its history back to Britain, and I'd still love to see it at some point.

It was no accident that the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez pleaded for the abolishment of internet anonymity at a WEF meeting in Davos. This is not about fighting internet bullying, but about stifling free speech. These people will do absolutely anything to keep right wing populists out of power,. They'll happily demolish the democratic system and turn Europe into a digital dictatorship if that's what it takes the "protect democracy" and stay in power themselves,

The EU gets away with a ton of ridiculous laws since most the regular people in most countries are completely oblivious to what happens there. They'll elect some b tier politicians to sit in the EU and then it's forgotten about until some law is pushed through fucking everyone up the ass.

And Germany wants to ban AFD. Soon your choice will be: left wing, more left wing and slightly less left wing. Why even have elections at this point? They will steer the narrative in social media and ban anything inconvenient.
Internet is the last place where you can find some information, there were massive riots against migrants in Spain and there was NOTHING about this in mainstream media, I found about it on Youtube.

USSR 2.0.

I thought this tweet is pretty illustrative of how the EU views the democracy process. Moldova held a referendum about EU succession in 2024. A tiny, tiny majority of 10,000 votes votes to join the EU. (50.35% for, 49.65% against)

The biggest worry was of course Russian election interference, but the real shocker is that the EU and EU countries behind the scenes supported parties that supported EU succession. It's the most blatant form of foreign election interference I can think of, but it's OK because they're the "good guys" and anyone who's against the EU is a Russian stooge.

Another example is the UK secretly financing a liberal Slovakian political party because the current Slovakian PM is a right wing populist.

Totally agree with this..

Both laws from the UK and EU enable the removal or suppression of content deemed "misinformation," "hate speech," or "harmful." Yet, it's the governments in power who define what it is hateful or misinformation.

While these laws are officially about safety and child protection, they give governments the tools to shape discourse and suppress dissent under noble-sounding pretenses. It allows those in power to shape and control the narrative.

This isn't some tin foil hat nonsense. If left unchecked it risks turning into a CCP style social credit system, only with better branding.

This is also one of the few times I've seen voices on the left and right unite against this. You know it's bad when Nigel Farage and Owen Jones are in agreement!

"There is a big difference between the EU and other countries ... therefore interference by a country like France in our elections is not considered foreign interference. Even when it comes to direct financing of political forces, we do not consider it a form of electoral corruption"

Fucking hell! That's crazy!
