WASHINGTON (Reuters) - First lady Laura Bush would defeat U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton if the two were to face each other in the 2008 presidential contest, Vice President Dick Cheney said on Monday.

Cheney made the prediction after his wife, Lynne Cheney, suggested the matchup in an interview on CNN's "Larry King Live."

Mrs. Cheney noted the rampant speculation that the former first lady, now a senator from New York, would make a bid in the next presidential go-around. President Bush cannot seek a third term in office. His father, former President Bush, was defeated after one term by former President Bill Clinton.

"You know, people are thinking of Mrs. Clinton running for president. I think Mrs. Bush ought to run for president," Mrs. Cheney said. "If we want to have a Bush dynasty, let's get Laura Bush."

The vice president, who again ruled out making his own run for president when Bush's term ends, agreed.

"It's a great idea," Dick Cheney said. "And I think I know who would win too."

Shutup Cheney. It's about lunchtime now, don't you have some babies you should be eating?

There is no chance that Laura Bush runs in '08. Zero.

On the other hand, she might beat Hillary. She is more liked than Hillary for sure, but Hillary has a ton more relevant experience. Laura has mostly remained above the political fray.

wouldn't be a turn for the worse, as it is I respect laura a lot more than GW

Why it is that I think she would be less likely to follow the carrot on the stick his cronies have out in front of him, I don't know.

She is a much easier sell than clinton, but some sinking feeling inside me still compells me to believe that even the republican party of today would rift and sepuku itself rather than field a woman (on a whole, I am sure there are lot of individuals who have no problem with the idea, rather than from a strategic standpoint).

I like the one video where Bush says the word "crusade" about the war on terror and you see her in the background like, "did you really just say that?"

I won't vote for her.

Actually the more I think about it, the more I think it would be a shrewed political move. What better time to field a woman as the candidate yourself as the same time the opposition does it. You select a strong female candidate to position yourself better for a victory (lets face it clinton will simply have more image problems to deal with) and your party gets the same positive, life affirming buzz from the press about how far we have come etc. and you wouldn't opn your party up to potential accusations of good ole boy gender discrimination.

It could be win win for the (R)s, but as someone else pointed out, she may not be all that interested.

If you look at the picture at the top of the thread, focus on Hilary's face, you peripheral vision will blur her hand and make it look like she is jobbing some one, and really enjoying herself :lol

What has Hilary CLinton done to piss people off so bad?
She hasn't done anything wrong persay, but she has some PR liabilities in whitewater (cleared or not), the monica fiasco and how she dealt with it would be scrutinized, and not to mention she is already in the daily crosshairs of major right wing pundits

The upside to this is either would provide entertaining entries for First Gentleman.

I think people place far too much emphasis on this. Clinton himself was in the daily crosshairs of major right wing pundits and was the CAUSE of the monica fiasco and he came through unscathed for the majority of people. Also, staying by him is pretty much the perfect right wing thing to do. Divorce would probably have been far more damaging to either of them.

Likewise, bush is deeply hated by a very large contingent of democrats, and no matter how much they froth at the mouth, he comes through unscathed.

It's not how much people hate you that matters, it's how many. The question is, would people who don't talk politics a lot vote for her. They're the ones that got both Clinton and Bush into office.

Even if she ran there is no way she would win. WTF are her qualifications? She's a freaking librarian!
many a good porn has involved librarians...

Isn't there a book in the works on Hillary, written by someone who is suppose to be a trusted author not left or right wing, that is going to have some huge bombshells in it? I heard them talking about it on the radio, and they were saying that it could end her bid for President before it begins, but no hints at what they could be yet.

Heh, I've gotta link this to my Cheney thread with this fascist characteristics. (Sorry Drozmight, I'm not stealing your gig)

http://www.chetzar.com/fascism.html

13.. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption – Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions, and who use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability.

14.. Fraudulent Elections – Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against (or even the assassination of) the opposition candidates, the use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and the manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

I'm not sure if I'm joking.

Most people would probably think libertarian when they said librarian, and vote for her because Ayn Rand-style angst is so cool these days.

Daddy always liked Jeb more and the family plan was always to have him be the preznit and not the family clown.

The problem was that Jeb got beat-in 1994, of all years-by the legendary Lawton Chiles. At that point, the whole coronation was derailed-Jeb had to wait until 1998 to get elected to the governor's mansion. Dubya did the opposite in 1994, defeating Anne Richards in Texas and thus setting himself for his 2000 run.
