If you ever have a chance, stop at a Marie Calendars restaurant and get one. They're way better than the frozen stuff from the grocery store.

Last time I was at a KFC with a friend, I got a pot pie and biscuits, because I don't really eat fried food and it was the healthiest thing there. It was pretty good, and I dipped the biscuits in the pot pie gravy. Pot pies are a solid dish.

I had Covid last week and while in quarantine I pretty much ate nothing but chicken pot pies, pretty much the only thing I could eat since I couldn't taste anything and had zero interest in eating but I could manage them.

Its hard to mess up. Even the frozen dollar store ones are pretty decent if you don't have a lot of time.

Chicken pot pie can be good if you know your spices, but most people's recipes along with virtually every commercial product is bland as hell.

Fucked up thing to say, but I'm glad I smoked when learning to cook. Making good food when only half your taste buds work makes for really good food when you quit smoking.

It's awesome, but I've convinced myself it's really bad for you for some reason since I really have only had the frozen cheap ones. Not sure what goes into the "broth," but it's probably fairly calorie dense.

I should try and talk the girlfriend into making some homemade soon. Never tried it.

The crust likely has the most calories. You can make a fairly simple pot pie using Campbell Cream of Chicken, which, while high in sodium, is fairly low in calories....a nice buttery crust on the other hand.

Yeah, that is weird. Because soup certainly doesn't have a lot of calories, nor does vegetables or chicken. I guess you're right.

Chicken Pop pie for whatever reason make headlines during the holidays, eating a chicken pot pie during the summer would be weird.

Im sure there's an undoubtedly delicious pot pie out there with a extremely fattening base that probably uses lard and a couple of sticks of butter though....that probably tastes like heaven.

Recipes that dont skimp on anything usually taste the best, but are absolutely shit for you, lol.

Where's the fat? Onions are cooked to soften in butter, and there's about half a cup of flour in the filing. Then the crust. The rest is broth, veggies, spices and chicken.
One 7oz Banquet chicken pot pie:

https://smartlabel.labelinsight.com/product/6371646/nutrition 30% daily allowance of sat fat (23% total daily fat) and 930 mg sodium (40% daily allowance). You can click the "ingredients" tab for the list of healthy stuff they put in there, including two different types of lard. Good stuff for sure.

I thought the thread was about homemade pot pie primarily. I don't eat frozen packaged pies.

Your friend has probably never cooked anything in their life with a response like that. You should fire them into the sun next time you take a trip through the cosmos.

Whenever someone mentions chicken pot pie I'm always reminded of that Lizzie McGuire episode where the mom and dad hand out a chicken pot pie to a kid after running out of candy on Halloween and the kid throws it back in their face lol

I personally enjoy chicken pot pie, even the frozen ones you buy at the grocery store aren't too bad. I'd say I'm overall indifferent to it, like I wouldn't make it myself at home, but I'd eat it if someone offered it to me.

A friend recommended it to me but I still have yet to try it
If you have options then I would suggest trying it at a restaurant first next time you get the chance or spending an extra few bucks at the grocery store if you were going to grab one from there. A cheap Frozen one while still being pretty good probably is not going to capture the Majesty of what a properly good one does for you.

Oh and only get one if it has the option to make it in the oven. Making a chicken pot pie in the microwave is like making pizza rolls in the microwave. Yeah it's going to taste okay and it's going to feed you, but it's not nearly as good as it could be. A crispy pot pie out of the oven is worth its weight in gold compared to a soggy mess that you get out of the microwave.

Fuck your friend and fuck you for being that guy's friend. I will fight anyone who says chicken pot pie sucks.

Also, your grandma is a saint

My Lee's Famous Recipe used to have Chicken Pot Pies as a special for a couple of months out of the year. You had to get there early because they would only make so many and that was it for the day. I miss those chicken pot pies. 😢

Blah blah blah - what the FUCK are you doing resurrecting a year and a half old Pot Pie thread? I've got my eye on you, creeper.

A good chicken pot pie is timeless and my love for a chicken pot pie knows no bounds. I hope you can share the love of chicken pot pie with the ones you love sometime soon.

I have never eaten a homemade pot pie.... beef or chicken.

I've only eaten the ones you buy frozen and the grocery store. All I can say is either they are all dogshit (likely), or I'm not doing it right (possibly) because every time I make it it's dry as hell and I got to make a small bowl or pot of gravy to slather on it. There's always way too much crust compared to what's inside it.

I was apparently so shitfaced and hungover the next day at this time when I made this thread that I completely forgot about it.

I started seeing notifications about a Chicken Pot Pie thread and my first reaction was confusion followed by "That shit is great though".

You know how it says "Similar Threads" at the bottom? Usually I ignore those but this one popped up for me yesterday and after seeing the title, I thought, "Well, I have to answer this one because I'm really in the mood for a chicken pot pie from my youth."

I search out restaurants for their pies.
If you're in London this place has the Best pies ever! Order the taster board that comes with 3 mini pies and beers to match each.

Thanks for this ancient thread op. It's 9am and now I want 🥧

Chicken Pot Pie is one of life's many delights. Only when it's made correctly, though. It's very easy to have a bad pot pie. A golden, buttery and flaky crust and a proper gravy really make or break these things. Of course the quality of chicken and vegetables too but really we all love CPP for it's crust and gravy filling, otherwise we'd just make chicken dumpling soup or something.

Weird american cooking is bad.

But hey, you don't make fun of another person's comfort food.

Puff pastry is good with chicken and white sauce, the veg are optional, i prefer my veg cooked serperatly, they will overcook inside the pie.
