Does this have anything to do with that televangelist wishing death on people?
Kinda, but Rehnquist is one of the more conservative judges (according to some) - Robertson was aiming a little more to the left with his Holy Death Ray of Smiting.

As a non-american, what are the implications of this?

Oops.

With all of congress in a tizzy dealing with/exploting/finger-pointing the N.O. disaster, this is only going to make things even more messy. Fast.

The last justice was battled over for five months and did not get out of the Senate. Bush appointed him back-door sty while the Senate was on recess, a tactic not used by a president to appoint a justice in something like 60 years.
Wow, my jaw is literally dropping. You can't be that ignorant of politics... can you?

Ha ha ha.

Pat Robertson:

Pray that additional vacancies occur within the Supreme Court.

Guess he got his wish. Rest in Peace :(

Dude, that is just 100% wrong. No SUPREME COURT Justice has ever been appointed in recess. Judge Roberts is his first SCOTUS nominee.

You're confusing Supreme Court Nominee John Roberts with UN Ambassador John Bolton.

Recess appointments aren't exactly rare, although for such high positions, they're certainly not frequent. John Bolton is also our ambassador to the UN, not a justice.

damn, i feel so political, all i can see is blues crying and reds dancing...

anyway, may not like the guy, but sad to see him die (why couldnt he live till '09?)

I can only hope his replacement will not be as conservative as Rehnquist. Because if that's the case, nothing will really change (it would actually get less conservative, if only by a little bit) and John Roberts will still be the only serious change, but we're all used to hearing about that anyway. Of course Roberts replacing O'Connor is still pretty bad in itself.

This is the worst possible time for this to happen.

That's the way I feel. I disagreed with most of his decisions, but he served his country for a long time and deserves respect. But yeah, not good timing.

All I'm gonna say is this: Jetlag. :)

So, yeah, that was dumb.

You have got to be f****** kidding me!!!!

Every single time Bush's administration comes under fire something else comes along to distract the press. The Katrina story is over. It will be Rehnquist, Rehnquist, Rehnquist from here on out, just watch. As a matter of fact CNN has already started asking their people stationed in the gulf about Rehnquist.

I've never seen anything like it.

What does this all mean? I should know, but I do not. Would someone care to explain?

Like I said, it's going to give Bush a new Supreme Court appointment. That means he has a sterling chance to anchor the country even more firmly in his politics for decades to come, not just years.

The only net effect of this will be that another conservative will be nominated to replace a conservative. So what's the big deal? I don't see how this is a big "win" or "loss" for either side.

You're basically going to see a young guy that thinks just like Rehnquist did, perhaps slightly less conservative. Slightly. Then again, who knows, on the other hand Bush could appoint someone more like Pat Robertson. You never know what he's going to do. You know he wants to piss liberals off.

This is really sad. Combine Roberts who is more conservative than O'Connor, and someone just like or possibly more conservative than Rehnquist... oh man. This country is doomed.

How many Democrats on the Supreme Court are there, total? Republicans?

This isn't as world ending as y'all think its going to be. With Bush's awful polling numbers and his essential lame duck status, he's not going to be able to get anyone through that is ultra-conservative like y'all are thinking. This is the way I see it breaking down:

- Roberts is confirmed and essentially takes Rhenquists spot
- New person who is middle of the road like O'Connor is confirmed
- Scalia is appointed to Cheif Justice (which is just a figurehead position - there's no extra power or anything)
- Democrats continue to bitch without offering any real solutions themselves

For all you people gnashing your teeth and rending your garments over the man's passing, (or what it means): Souter.

Now that that's taken care of, RIP, Mr. Rehnquist.

Ok, I just did some quick research with Wikipedia and http://www.issues2000.org/Court/Court.htm

Stephen Breyer (Clinton) - Liberal

Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Clinton) - Liberal

Clarence Thomas (George HW) - Conservative

David Souter - (George HW) - Conservative, but tends to act like a moderate as he more often than not sides with the liberal point of view on issues like abortion

Anthony Kennedy (Reagan) - Socially liberal, economically conservative.

Antonin Scalia (Reagan) - Conservative; Wikipedia says that he may actually replace Rehnquist as chief justice.

John Paul Stevens (Ford) - Conservative; however he tends to side with liberals on issues such as abortion. This guy has been around FOREVER.

John Roberts (George W.) - I think we all know where this guy stands. To the right.

So really, if I'm not mistaken... there seems to be a more liberal point of view overall.

Damn, one thing after the other. There's just no hope for rational people. We'll be swamped in freaking Jesusland before we know it.

When has a lack of a mandate and relatively low public support EVER stopped the Bush administration from doing ANYTHING?
