China seized U.S. Navy drone in South China Sea

Also when China deals with crisis every few years. *shrug*

China pulled steady growing rates in the last decades but anykind of stuff in the world. Even this year will end with >6,5%.

At some point it gets silly to predict the fall of China all the time when in reality we will only see underperforming years in the worst case.

Can we stop comparing every situation to the outbreak of WWI

It's getting very, very old and not even remotely apt for comparison.

It doesn't help that it wasn't even the zeitgeist before the war.

Yeah, they actually can't do this. It's international waters. China is doing something illegal and no one seems to be noticing that. Seems everyone thinks it's okay China did this because of what Trump said. Well, it's not.
Where are the people saying this?

2017 gonna be the year when China will fall!

I also like how a single economy crisis is supposed to destroy China completely, when the rest of the world deals with crisis every few years.

The Chinese economy can survive an economic crisis, but the real concern for the Chinese government is a loss of faith of their population that the government can prevent these types of situations. They are concerned way more about the populations view of their ability to control everything.

The Chinese government made a massive push to have its general population enter the stock market two years ago and it created a massive stock market bubble as families plowed their cash into the stock market. After awhile the smart money started getting getting out and the general population that kept buying on the way up started getting slaughtered. The PBOC stepped in started buying up stock like crazy and banned brokers from inputting short orders in an attempt to stem the tide.

Pretty much. A response will absolutely be necessary, Trump be damned. You don't steal from the US Navy.

I hate to keep quoting you but you're once again correct.

In the years leading up to the war it was very clear to most involved that economic ties weren't going to be able to stop a global conflict which is one of the reasons everyone willingly participated in the Hague Conventions in the decades prior.

the US is eating itself to pieces, pretty sure china is cool with taking our lil boats giving us the finger and watching trump lose is marbles over it

Eh. To me China seems to like stability more than for example Russia. For survival of the communist party of China economic growth is the most important aspect in keeping populace happy. Someone like Trump that seems to be openly very anti-china brings unstability to the foreign politics. Someone like Clinton that would have represented the continuation of the current situation had been way safer choice.

Wait, so you actually believe the growth numbers China publicly announces? They are completely made up by the local authority figures that want to show that they are growing to keep their jobs.

No economist believes their figures are accurate. Many economists started calculating their growth based on things like energy usage and other factors that are much harder to fake, they magically stop being reported.

Even the Chinese diplomats say so.

I'm sure if China's economy goes down the shitter, people are going to blame the ruling party, instead of that loud orange guy who just can't shut the fuck up about China.

Now, why would they do that, when the Chinese government can make a boogeyman out of Trump?

Make no mistake, they're sending a message. China does not play around when it comes to Taiwan. Trump better adjust accordingly.

Where are the people saying this?

I just don't understand why people are worrying about Trump here when this is a risk for all people and it can happen again to another country.

Damn, I wonder if this is because of Trump's remarks about Taiwan. A little show of force.

This is fucking scary...

Shouldn't have played friendly with Taiwan.

Theres only one China.

He isn't even president, and they're already telling Trump "We aren't fucking around."

Man, the next four years are gonna be rough.

Awaiting that Trump tweet that makes matters worse.

China to Trump: "Stick out your tongue and we'll cut it off."

You don't mess with people you owe money to.

Hopefully this sends a message to electors that Trump's words have dire consequences.

Can't wait for someone to blame Obama

Thinking about it, this is one way for Trump to gain more support. Nothing like a little nationalist fervor to bring people together.

The twitter responses to Reuters are already on top of that.

None of these posts show that they register what China did as a bad thing. Instead they talk more about Trump and how this is all his fault. This isn't only an United States problem. This is a National Security risk for ALL nations. China pretty much just said "fuck if it's in International waters, we're gonna take it".

It's a big deal. Iran seized one of our drones and proceeded to reverse engineer and boast about it.
China is the king of reverse engineering and boasting.
It's embarrassment and demands a response.

I'm sure China had good reason to do what they did. Unlike the US, China tends to not stir up shit intentionally.

Reverse engineer what? It's a research drone.

Obama's response: It's cool. Send it back when you get a chance. Thanks, China.

Trump's response: Authorization - Trump, 56652 Alpha Vector Sigma. Ready - GO LAUNCH GO.

A good reason isn't, "Because Trump tweeted and made fun of them." If you're sane and concerned about national security you wouldn't be like "Oh hey, whatever they took our drone. Must be for a good reason ya know? Must be for a good cause." They do have good reason and this guy nails on the head as to why. This is their time to stir up shit:

Correct. Wouldn't be surprised to see China begin to escalate tensions (whether or not Trump was there) as a way to distract their populace from the oncoming economic troubles. You set up an outside entity as the boogeyman for all of your problems.

China's economy is starting to spiral downward due to the massive overleveraging they have undertaken over the past several years in order to try and hold to their made-up growth rate.

The real estate bubble is already bursting, the stock market was shown to be a sham and finally China's bond bubble is beginning to burst. They halted trading on bond futures for the first time yesterday, and for the first time in 18 months they failed to sell all of their Treasury Bills at auction due to low demand. Local traders are expecting short term rates to rise significantly over the next 3-6 months. Heat from the Fed raising rates, the yuan's decline and drying up liquidity in the money markets is potentially setting up a perfect storm for an economic disaster.

China is already attempting to prop up the Yuan via selling UST's at a blistering pace and despite all that its pegged to the USD at the lowest rate since 2008.

But nah its none of that stuff. Just China out there trying to show Trump who's boss.

AMIRITE?

You think people in China are going to blame the ruling class when they ruling class will tell them it's a foreign country's fault? Good luck with that.

Because we, and past Presidents, know the value of proportional responses to international provocations like this that have happened throughout history.

Trump has made it clear that he would rather escalate things into actual war and that the threshold of provocations for him to start lashing out at others is incredibly low.

Responses I've seen:

"This is Obama's fault because the Chinese aren't afraid of him. Trump will show 'em"

"US intelligence lies to us again. This didn't happen, they just want to scapegoat China."

"Obviously Obama is doing something to China and we deserve to have this happen because America has become the villain under liberal leadership!"

So are Asians the next race to be hated in America?
since Trump supports can't tell the different between Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc.

If this vessel was simply an ocean mapping vessel, and China swiped it from what are universally agreed international waters – that is poor form. And generally China behave aggressively in that part of the world…so it’s believable.

But I will just say, why do people get surprised when people don’t like that the US has a military presence thousands of miles away from home. Why is there a US vessel in those waters? Why are there as many US bases in the South China Sea as there are?

If China started to set up bases close to the US they would lose their shit.

China is a growing power and it will assert itself in that way. The US has set the precedent for a lot of this kind of behaviour.

It's not okay, but international politics doesn't give a fuck about what is ok.

Trump thought he could get a better deal out of China, looks like it will be the other way around.

Nice going Trump, you made America China's bitch. Now both China and Russia own us.

But he wasn't the one who escalated things in this regards. He went to Taiwan. China was mad. Some tension was brewed. China then proceeds to steal US drone. China completely escalated the situation at hand. You can argue it was a two way street, but China STOLE a piece of US Naval Equipment.

Yes, China escalated this. Not like this wasn't all triggered because of Trump. Nope. China just did all this in a vacuum.

China always responds with a heavy hand. Intimidation is one of the major things holding their government together. Anything that makes the party look weak has to be responded to with extreme action or they fear losing legitimacy. China will never back down to direct criticism or challenge.

America needs that big bad boogeyman to keep that military budget growing.

I guess its gonna be China now.

Weee.

I thought that we skipped China and decided to go with hostile aliens? 🤔

If you've ever taken a road trip in the US you'd know their culture is steeped in military imagery. You can't go a day without seeing multiple references to their armed forces.
