Or at least the government does:

BEIJING — If you’re trying to read this story on the Internet in China, there’s a growing chance that all you’ll see is: “This page cannot be displayed.”

For Chinese looking for unfiltered, uncensored news, it’s about to get a lot worse.

Communist leaders have imposed a set of strict new regulations on Internet news content. The rules, issued Sunday by the Ministry of Information Industry and the State Council, China's cabinet, will "standardize the management of news and information" in the country.

The new rules take effect immediately and are seen targeting bloggers and other unofficial journalists and news sites.

China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported that only "healthy and civilized news and information that is beneficial to the improvement of the quality of the nation, beneficial to its economic development and conducive to social progress" will be allowed.

Internet news sites, it said, must "be directed toward serving the people and socialism and insist on correct guidance of public opinion for maintaining national and public interests."

Any Web site publishing news stories in China is now required to register with the government. This includes any company disseminating news to China’s 200 million cell phone customers using SMS, Short Message Service technology.

China has an army of cyber police who track, patrol, monitor and block Web sites and e-mails it deems a threat to society, namely communist rule. Searching for the words “democracy” or “human rights” from the Internet in China will yield very few readable results.

I wonder if Bush will invade Beijing to set them free.

Nah...

this is probably a good thing. makes psyops campaigns easier if a war should break out. all you do is tell people the truth instead of our own half-spun lies (a la afghanistan's infamous "kill a taliban member, win a delicious apple pie!" campaign). i only see it as the chinese government fucking themselves over as they don't trust their people.

can't blame them. I think if our nation had people smart enough to get away from blocking real news from getting to us, they'd have done it already.

*looks at NYT*... oh... wait.

When I was china, the unversity I was at imposed it's own restrictions - no access to anysite outside of China. You could only access ***.com.cn.

Also there was once talk of banning computers for freshmen in theri rooms, because it would 'create bad study habits', as they claimed too many students were playing online games or chatting. They said after a year, they could use them, as they would've developed proper study habits. I don't think that ever happened, though.

I don't think they even had access to google.

But does it swallow.

(This typical of these harsh regimes. They don't want their people reading materials they fear could cause a revolts amongst the people. Ironically Bush's Saudi buddies also do this to their people.)

yeah china sucks. but there is nothing we can do about it in our lifetimes.

but hey at least the food rocks over there.

...please don't tell me that you are only realizing that the Chinese government is bad because they filter the internet.

A communist regime filtering the media its people can legally access?

Unthinkable.

Unthinkable? Nay....

Isn't this all completely old?

Anyone who didn't know China imposed restrictions on certain Internet sites for a long while now is clueless sorry to say.
