Chip Yields are the problem with 360 supply shortage

Shoulda done like Sony and disabled one of the cores so they would get higher usable yields...Gabe Newell says he doesn't want to use multiple cores anyway ;)

"...we know that the yields we expected will probably outrun supply." *scratches head* how would yields ever outrun supply?

Not only is that bullfuckingshit I heard from my local gamestop a rumor that faulty HD's were the reason.

Either way its gotta be some sort of production issue.

Yes, because faulty HDs stop the tard pack from coming to market.

Call me crazy, but I believe Ballmer over a Gamestop employee. :)

I knew it was a production problem. They should be more honest.

Well to be fair it wasnt just a 'gamestop employee" it was my old manager, who heard something from his manager.

Probably not, but you're definitely in the extreme minority.

Damn! Really? That's saying something right there...

And what is it really saying, besides the fact that someone has really shitty luck?

Yeah, that's pretty much inexcusable.

If they realized yields were down, I'm sure they would have launched in US alone. Surely they aren't THAT stupid. This has to be something far more embarrassing to M$. Recalls, full production hault, something.

Give it a rest.

I've heard the same rumour (HW manufacturing problems) - only in this case HDs were not singled out.

That's a sensible idea, but....X360's got a tri-core CPU. If you remove one of those, you also automatically remove TWO HW threads, and weaken the FPU power considerably.

PS3 CELL originally had a PPE + 8 SPEs, so removing 1 SPE wasn't really that big of a deal regarding the total FP performance.

So essentially they haven't really fucking launched the damn console. They knew they wouldn't have enough. And other sources I've come across say MS rushed testing (to the point of almost no testing) to get the console out the door.

I don't know what's causing the production problem, but I heard in two different radio stations that the XBOX 360 is having problems, people complaining about the machine over heating and freezing. The funny part is that one of the latin stations was saying to contact Microsoft, that the problem is in one of the chips, that MS will send you a replacement chip, you need to open the 360 and replace it yourself :lol

Yeah, it is shitty luck. But I'm not really shitting on the 360.. It's an awesome piece of hardware when it was working for me. It just seems like there are a lot of people who got 360s with flashing lights, freezing games, etc. Hopefully the third time will be the charm.

That is what Corporate at gamestop is telling stores

When you launch a console first, you are inherently at a disadvantage technology-wise. Obviously MS wanted to wait as long as possible to finalize the hardware so that they could get the most “spec bang” for the buck. The only problem with that tactic is it reduces your pre-launch production time. Now add to that the world-wide launch, which further reduces initial supplies to all regions, and you get the picture. Rushed testing is certainly also a valid possibility.

IÂ’m sure there are some legitimate hardware problems, but you will always hear more anecdotal evidence supporting problems around launch, especially on the interweb.

How can there be major issues with the HDD manufacturing in this day and age - of a 20G harddrive at that? Who are they getting them from?

I belive they're supplied by Seagate.

Wow, this "launch" sounds like it has been a nightmare. I can now see why worldwide launches have been avoided in the past. Lack of foresight and poor quality control is to blame here. How can Microsoft be so shortsighted and stupid?

I'm beggining to hear rumblings to that "Xenos" is giving Microsoft issues. Someone significant on another board actually (vaguely) confirmed.

I heard on the underground that the power supply contains a family of mexican workers.

Someone who's friend works for a company that sub-contracts work from a microsoft contractor said "maybe *shrug*" when i asked him, i took it as a confirmation.

Holy shit that sucks. This is another factor why I am waiting on buying one. Hopefully they are working the kinks out or most of them are worked out by now in production.

I have a friend who is on his eleventh Xbox 360. Something's definitely wrong here. And that's saying something.

How, with all the limited supply, is he on his 11th one?

Microsoft took a gamble with their worldwide launch, and while demand is high at the moment, they sort of shot themselves in the foot here in the short-term. But like the PS2's early launch problems, the 360 has a great shot at riding this momentum to a solid install base.

Man, I preordered this damned thing in June, and now it's looking like I may not get one until January. Absolutely pathetic. The store I pre-ordered at did get their "replenishment" this week (so Major Nelson and his weekly replenishment strategy can eat tar and die), in the form of two god damn units. Being 12th on the list didn't sound so bad at first, but if that's their replenishment strategy I'm screwed nonetheless. This store is going to be in for a world of shit when they are finally forced to officially break the "before Christmas" promise they made to the people on the preorder list.

Maybe I'm missing some internal humor here, but I don't believe that for a second.

It's gonna be interesting to see if they can keep the momentum going when Sony / Nintendo start their hype trains full steam.

His friend is a Gamestop manager.

Now why would not go any further with that? If true, that's a fairly big story. What did he say (I know you said "vaguely", but there's got to be more than to it than that)?

I would bet the shortages aren't one single reason, but a myriad of reasons.

Wow, that really sucks for all of those who aren't friends of the manager. They don't get treated as well.

On another, slightly related note:

Fry's is telling frustrated customers that "It's better to wait than to get one now anyway, a lot of them are faulty and VERSION 2.0 is coming after the New Year". :lol

I got this from a sales clerk there (my friend's sister).

Hence why PR need to get off their asses and fix this fuck up. Rumors are spreading rampant from the general consumer. I've heard many people say "They were recalled".

Not all the problems are with the hard drive, although some are.

I have five friends and relatives who also purchased the 360. Out of the six of us, only two of us have had bad units.

One friend had a bad HD which was fixed by swapping hard drives through EB where he purchased it, and has been working fine ever since. I've had two with "internal errors" which have been sent back to MS.

I not really mad, as long as I end up getting one that works. MS has been fantastic with their customer support, overnighting the shipments back and forth. And like TheDuce22 said, it's not the first console launch that has had some bumps. I almost expect problems, and just hope that I'm not the one who gets a bum one. I lucked out with the the last gen of systems and handhelds, so I guess it was my turn. It's just the chance you take with being an early adopter, unfortunately.

The best thing I heard was on the radio some guy said xbox 360 will raise your electric bill by 30 bucks a day. He was serious.

Sorry guys, I was just being sarcastic there (mocking anecdotal evidence, and the fact that everyone seems to have a friend who's a Gamestop manager). When I read Dr_Cogent's response to my original post, I thought he was being sarcastic, too.
