Choosing a new plasma tv

I am deciding between the Panasonic 42X1 and the 42G10. I will be sitting about nine feet away from whichever TV I buy and I am looking for the best bang for my buck STRICTLY in terms of picture quality/performance (extra features/inputs don't matter much to me).

The G10 apparently has better color accuracy and deeper blacks than the X1, and its also a 1080p model vs. the 720p X1. The thing is that the G10 would cost me $1075 while the X1 is only $725. At this screen size/viewing distance, I don't see the value of 1080p and I don't know if the G10's better picture quality justifies spending almost 50% more for it over the X1. Another option is to get the 50" X1 for about $930. How would a 50" 720p set look from about nine feet away? Any help on deciding would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, since FullHD is the future, go for the newer one. I have heard good things about the G10 panels as well. The 350$ price difference should be worth it.

Even at only 42" and nine feet away?

Though reported differences in picture quality (aside from resolution) are making me lean toward the G10 anyway. I guess the real debate is between the 42G10 (at $1075) and the 50X1 (at $930). At nine feet away, will the extra inches or the better PQ be more desirable?

picture quality by far. I have an old sub-720p Pio Plama here, and having to downscale Blu-Rays feels kinda odd.:lol

The G10 series is meant to be a fantastic fantastic TV, has stepped up into the void left by the now defunct Pioneer Kuro.
All the reviews I have read of the G10 series have been stellar.

I'm only concerned because the AVSForum guys always talk about how so many buyers regret not getting a bigger TV. Ugh, such a hard decision...

this you will always have.:lol :lol :lol
when I started with 43inch, I thought "Whoa", now a 55inch is at the lower end of the "still acceptable" size spectrum...:D

yeah.. at one time, a 32" was the biggest TV I had ever seen..then I went to a 46.. and now a year later, I'm at 50".. but I'm trying to realistic.. I only sit about 6 feet from my tv.. and my entire living area is only 13 feet wide.. so anything larger would truly be overkill.

I have also been looking around for a new big screen TV. I have no preference it could be either a LCD or a Plasma. A few days a go I went to several electronic stores and the TVs that stood out were the Samsung LED tvs but they are pretty darn expensive. As someone mentioned above the Panasonic G10 series is pretty good and has received good reviews. Panasonic is also coming out with a new V10 series this summer that should be pretty hot but seems like it could be a little expensive. I would also keep an eye out for the new Vizio LED tv that will come out soon. The 55" will be $1999.

LED TVs are nice, bright, and thin, but depending on if it's sidelit or backlit, the view angle could be significantly more limited than LCDs or Plasma screens. The sidelit ones are terrible IMO.

I used to be in the LCD camp but I've since been converted to Plasma. Love the black levels and love the motion handling. The Panasonic G10 is a great Plasma if you can't go Kuro =)

V10 is shipping now. I have been following it for a couple months. I just wish they had a 42or 46 inch version, the G15 which is a g10 with the styling of the v10 will come in smaller sizes but it has the crippled 48hz refresh for 24p sources some people complained about on the 800/850.

Europe does get smaller v 10s for what it's worth.

My parents are going to have to get a new tv. The have a 62" Toshiba DLP that they have insured through Sears. A board went out on it and it can't be rebuilt and it's not made anymore, so Sears is replacing it. They gave us $3,100 is store credit. They have a 50" Panasonic 1080p plasma for $1,500. I'm going to try to get them to get that. I hope that they'll let us use what's left and I can get a cheap HDTV too.

I just know I'm going to have buyer's remorse no matter which direction I go in. FML...

Trust me, pal. These are problems you want to have. :lol

I have a 720p 42" Panny I bought two and a half years ago that still makes me happy. Until I walk the aisles of Costco and see the same size TV but 1080p for $400 less than what I paid for mine.

Just remember, you're gonna have a fucking nice TV.

Viewing distance is even further than I thought, so I went ahead and bought the 50" X1. I know I'll be missing out a little bit whenever I play a Bluray, but for 95% of my needs, this TV seems pretty perfect.

I'll say my usual . . . Plasma TVs use too much energy. Please consider more efficient systems.

And now matter what system you get, put your TV, game consoles, AV receivers, and anything else you use there on a power strip that you can turn off when you are not using the system. This prevents a lot of 'vampire' energy usage of systems even when they are turned off. The energy saved will pay for the power strip within a few months.

Personally I'm heading for a Panasonic V10 Plasma when they come out in June. Their NeoPDP Plasma Screen technology seems to be a leap ahead compared to all other plasmas (except G10's which have the same thing). More Importantly, it has an integrated THX mode which is pre-calibrated for better picture quality.

Panasonic Plasma screens nowadays use less electricity than most LCD TV's (especially at larger sizes).

http://reviews.cnet.com/green-tech/tv-consumption-chart/?tag=arw

(observe the G10 plasma is one of the lowest power consuming 46" screens on that chart.)

I got my Panasonic for 1300~.

1080p 50 in.

I think it's a decent deal, and it's nice knowing that the TV will last me quite a while in terms of resolution.

That's interesting that plasmas are no longer quite the power-suckers they once were. I'm pretty sure I'd much prefer the picture quality of a plasma over an LCD, but the power requirements always gave me pause. I had figured that I'd eventually go for an LED backlit LCD, with local dimming, but maybe I need to put plasmas back "on the list". (I have a DLP now, but it'll have to be replaced pretty soon, I fear.)

B.K., downgrading your parents from a 62" set to a 50" set that will likely be further away (since it's wall mounted) sounds like a pretty terrible idea. Yes, it'll be a much nicer picture, but there's no substitute for square inches, especially if you aren't a videophile. That goes double if your eyesight ain't all that.

They don't have much choice. Looking at their site, they have some 54" and 58" ones. They have a DLP. My mom has said that she doesn't want another DLP.

I hear yah... I don't want another DLP either. Great picture, but kinda bulky, rainbows, and color-wheel noise. I guess you are limited by Sears' selection, huh? $3,000 sounds like enough to buy a big ass LCD or plasma, as long as you aren't demanding top o' the line picture quality. But if Sears doesn't carry such a thing, perhaps you are hosed.

Could the "store credit" be used on Sears.com? They could get something like this. (Perhaps it could be ordered and picked up at the store?)

I bought a 42G10 when it was just released. The picture quality amazing considering the price. Great features as well.

Some professional tv dudes calibrated the G10 using some expensive equipment. These are the recommend settings:

Code:
Viewing Mode: Cinema
Contrast: 36
Brightness: 0
Color: 30
Sharpness: 0
Colour Balance: Warm
Colour Management: Off
x.v.Colour: Off
Eco-format: Off
P-NR: Off
Intelligent Frame Creation: Off
White Balance High Red: -2
White Balance High Blue: 0
White Balance Low Red: -4
White Balance Low Blue: 0
Gamma: 2.2

I don't think so. The people that called gave us a code that we have to use at the store. I think it can only be used in store.

I think my parents finally decided on a 58" Panasonic plasma. We went to Sears today to look at what they had. They had one left for $2799. It was last years model and they were trying to get rid of it. My parents decided to wait for them to get the new model in.
