Chrono Anniversary

In 1995, Square unleashed Chrono Trigger on the gaming community and it became Nintendo Power's game of the year.

In 2000, the sequel to Chrono Trigger was released - Chrono Cross. It won GameSpot's game of the year.

Now that it's 2005, well, it's about damn time we get another sequel!

I agree, we need a new Chrono game.

Although, personally I didn't really like Chrono Cross all to much, trigger was pure bliss though.

I loved Chrono Trigger so much that Chrono Cross couldn't have lived up to my expectations. Even after lowering my expectations, I didn't much care for Chrono Cross anyway, but that's off-topic. Hopefully, we'll see this released alongside PSU this year.

Trigger destroys Cross in almost every category.
Even though I wouldn't agree with the first part because everybody is entitled to their opinion, I would definetly agree with the second part!

This is one of those games that will only disapoint with a sequel.

Chronotrigger is still my favorite rpg. 10 years later and it is still a blast to play. Wish more rpgs could be half as good as CT.

I was being serious about the first part.

But if by the parts that matter you mean:

- having a 50 person capacity to pull from, where only three are essential to the story
- shitty elemental battle system that in no way resembles CT
- retarded story
- retarded 'plot twist'
- letdown of a final boss
- painfully annoying way to beat said boss to view 'good' ending
- turning one of the most badass characters (Magus) into a sissy (Guile)

Then yeah, I guess I would have to retract my statement.

You sir have hit the proverbial nail on the head.

Chrono Trigger was the first RPG I ever played and what a great one to start off with. I keep reading and reading about it in Nintendo Power and they made it sound like the best thing ever. I got it for Christmas '95 and it was and is just a great game. Nice graphics and well made. It has a story that really makes you care about the characters, especially if you pursue all/most of the side quests.

- And every one of those characters are more interesting to play as than toriyamas Dragon Ball/Dr. Slump rejects.
- youre a lunatic, Triggers system is an archaic bore compared to Crosses fantastic battles, fast paced and engaging, perfect implentation of elementals whose only downside is a cumbersome inventory. You may want your games to resemble each other, but id rather new things.
- opinion. The Fate/chronopolis stuff rips apart everything from trigger.
- again opinion
- etc etc.
- annoying maybe, but never troubled me.
- who gives a shit? He was hardly important anyways if my memory serves me correctly.

hmmm

Chrono Trigger had

- A hero that was just a kid in the wrong place at the wrong time
- 5 differnt "Times"
- 15 plus endings
- kick ass story
- cool character designs
- Frog
- a few differnt ways to beat lavos
- Crono Dies
- a nice combo system
- cool little things that make games good (like killing Magus and seeing Glenn in the good ending, giving the greedy man's ancestors money changed him into a giving man, etc.)
- 7 differnt characters all with unique stories that tied into the main story...they all had a purpose.

Chrono Cross had

- you typical the world revolves around me square hero
- 2 dimension fo the SAME EXACT layout
- 2 endings
- Lame story boring ass "luke I am your father" story seen iin many square stories.
- Really horrible character designs that looked like bad fan art.
- Glenn the not quite frog but you had to connect the game together some how.
- one way to beat the last guy to get the good ending
- Serge turns into Lynx cause...it's you ssdd square game.
- Lame combo system
- ....umm...it had FMV's....!?
- too many character that all but 3 ended up being filler.

ummm....I may be confused, tired or old but shouldn't a sequil IMPROVE on the first game not be a giant leap backwards? After Chrono Cross I really don't want a CT3.

Not going to touch the argument some people are trying to start, but I thought Cross was a piece of trash not worthy of holding Trigger's jock. If a new Chrono game comes out it better be a worthy sequel.

What would some of you want in a "perfect" sequel?

More of the same?

Edit: hmm, how about something moderately new that improves upon on the first? :)

Ah.....I would love it if they revealed a Chrono game for 2005. Chrono Trigger is my favorite game of all time, and I loved Chrono Cross as well.

You all may disagree on which one is better, but here's something we can all agree on: Mitsuda should be the composer if there is indeed a Chrono sequel. Both CT's and CC's music rocked.

Apparently, and amusingly unsurprising.

Im all for arguing Cross is better, even though I know im in the utterly miniscule minority, and that lays solely with my personal preferences about the game (art direction and gameplay, both which excel trigger by miles to me), and in no way is Trigger terrible...its still great, though my love for CC may not make it look that I think that. But trying to put forth the arguement that Cross (one of the apexes of 32 bit RPGs regardless of how much your love for trigger blinds you) is a terrible game is mindblowing.

We need Yoji Horii & Toriyama back on Chrono... and quick!

I FULLY agree with this post!!! They're what makes Trigger better than Cross!!!!!

Comparing the battle system of another generation of RPG's is pretty ridiculous. Even so, CT's is VASTLY superior to CC. Simple but efficient. No bullshit, no fluff.

Yeah Crono Cross is a garbagy game hidden inside some beautiful environments and a mostly fantastic soundtrack.

I recall it's battle system was actually slower paced then a fight in Xenogears... the gear battles that is. It had no real story to speak off, to many useless annoying and horribly drawn characters to keep track off AND to top it all off it tried to wreck a cool plot point from the original with a half assed ending.

If they make another chrono game, they should just steal level 5's engine for DQ8 and adapt it a bit, this game more then anything needs toriyamas artwork. To disagree with that is to have poor taste. I could care less if crono looked like goku, or that marle looked like bulma it's still better art then that angsty scratchy garbage they had in Chrono Cross.

Finally, to this day I can still go back and play through chrono trigger, I haven no interest in touching chrono cross with even a 30 foot pole.

uh-huh. I love toriyamas stuff as much as the next guy, hell I was raised on it, but to imply that any of it is even as remotely as interesting or well drawn as Nobuteru Yuukis designs is awful garbage itself. If thats good taste, which im thankful its not, then you can keep it :P

I agree big time. Chrono Trigger was my first traditional RPG outside of the Dragon Warrior games on NES... I couldn't imagine a better start. It will always hold a special place in heart. *sniff*

I really wish the Chrono Trigger revival project had not been killed by the Squinx, as that was actually looking to shaping up to be one fine remake.

Really. They're all under the same roof now; it makes NO sense that they wouldn't green-light this.

I guess you could like CC if you want, but to me CC is like the Final Fantasy Mystic Quest of Final Fantasies.

Problem with comparison: CC ain't simplistic.

Oh I know, you're right, but the comparison has nothing to do with simplicity and everything to do with it sucking major donkey nads.

I wish I could wrap my mind around the rational that leads to an opinion that CC not only is a horrible game but "sucks donkey nads." Because I cant really fathom it. There is such a thing as having an objectively wrong opinion, and this is one such example.

You also have to take into account that you don't know my personality, and me saying such things means nothing really as I always tend to over exaggerate or create "hyperboles" if you will out of everything. So me saying sucks donkey nads generally would mean I didn't like the game. Nothing more sir.

Ok enough of this shit.

Now appreciate and stop the hate!

Guys, there's totally room for both Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger love.

I love em' both a lot! I like them both for different reasons. And think they both have fantastic battle systems. I think they both have gorgeous, colorful and vibrant visuals and I think they both have unique stories that stand out especially when compared to todays lackluster offerings. And dear God, both have some of the best soundtracks ever.

I dunno, I'm not out to put hate on the whole Chrono Trigger vibe at all.. but a friend of mine related something that I found mildly amusing.

"NA gamers have had two big RPGs that revolutionized their viewpoint of what an RPG is supposed to be and they can proudly proclaim them as the throne title. Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VII. More often than not these two titles also happen to be their first proper Jap RPG."

I have played through it like everyone else - bar me hunting every single English RPG released on SNES back in the day. Yes it was a great RPG but all this praise and constant "we need a true sequel!" reminds me of the whole FFVII hype that derailed it in my vision (yes FFVII is a great game and the scope of the storyline & characters are vast... just like every other Final Fantasy).

Like I said, no hate on CT or FFVII or Saga Frontier or whatever. I just find it amusing that most people are like this.
