Chrono Trigger, one of the best JRPGs of all time, is on discount right now (70-75%, depending on platforms)

It's OK. SNES is still the best version with DS a close second, then PC.

No idea why would you say SNES is the best version, when DS and PC are clearly better, with more contents and features, as well as improved translations.

DS has the most contents, while PC is only lacking the monster beastiary. Even the mobile version is pretty good now.

It doesn't work very well on steam deck, most proton versions have a severe frame skipping bar one which just has minor frame skipping when playing portably. Playing it docked induces the stuttering again, haven't found a proton layer to fix it.

I'm reading that it was fixed about two years ago.

Looks like it also has ultrawide support on PC, which is awesome. and ShaderGlass could also be nice.

It may be time for me to finally pull the trigger and play this game.

It was fixed at some stage but then it was broken again.
It's fine on PC although I think it's still recommended using special k or rtss to cap it to 60fps.

Most of the recent protons will be playable although it will depend on your tolerance to stuttering, it's certainly not as bad as it was but it's still pretty noticable.
As soon as you plug it into an external monitor it goes straight back to being as shit as it was.
I honestly have no idea how to explain the behavior maybe it doesn't like 120htz monitors or TVs.

I have been through about 20 different protons and tried all manner of vsync, power controle options.

The best one I have found is to use GE-Proton8-32 with the use of Powertools to set smt off and use 3 threads. You'll get a few minor spikes entering areas but it seems to smooth out fairly quickly. And it seems to work with both handheld and docked.
Only caveat is that GE-Proton8-32 breaks controller support but a work around is just to map it to keyboard controls (there's a community made one called Chrono Speedruns, might have to "Show all layouts" as it's listed as a duelsense layout).

The new content is mostly ass and the new translations are a downgrade.

I only bought it so I could tear it apart when I'm done

And, of course, to prove I'm not completely broke

For those that decide to play the SNES version, be sure to check out Retro Achievements!

Game has a really decent set of fun achievements. For me, this helps me want to replay the game for the millionth time.

Well, my wife bought the game on her iPhone about an hour ago and I was able to grab it on my iPhone but for some reason it's still showing as a purchase on my Apple TV? Any ideas? Just wait?
