The 25 Best JRPGs of All Time - IGN

I don't agree with the 1 game per franchise approach. You're making a "Best JRPGs of All Time" list. It's stupid to exclude some of the best JRPGs of all time, because you already picked a game from that series. It's cool if FFX is your favorite, but then you got to exclude FFVI, which pretty much everyone agrees is one of the pioneers and best games in the genre.

I agree it doesn't make sense to do it this way.

I take all sorts of issues with the list. No Phantasy Star, no FF VII, FFVI, only one DQ game? No Persona 3, or P4?

I also find it curious that they excluded Blue Dragon, Skies of Arcadia, FFIX? SMTIII over SMT IV or SMT V?

Old school SEGA should be more represented, they were a massive force pushing for RPGs (and adventure games) in the West in the 90s.

Golden Sun is poop, if you have to pick a Camelot game, pick Shining Force II or III.

Phantasy Star needs to be there, either II or IV. Skies of Arcadia as well. Dragon Force would have a place if it was me, a timeless masterpiece.

Grandia II is OKish, but from Gamearts, Lunar Eternal Blue on SEGA-CD is their best game, in my opinion. Otherwise, FF X, Star Ocean 2 and Chrono Trigger deserve to be there, fantastic games.

Atlus is overrated as fuck, I wouldn't pick a single game from them, except Radiant Historia on DS. Same for Falcom, I wouldn't pick a single game. Octopath games as well. Xenoblade is fine, my preference goes towards X. Dragon Quest is incredibly mid in my opinion but I suppose an entry deserve to make it in the list.

>party based game, a pretty straight forward experience/level up system. They also have the same usual cliché/trope in characters and story.

What?? God Of War 2018 and Ragnarok has a ""party system"", a cliche story and a simple level up system with upgrade trees that PS2 Odin Sphere already had. Does It mean these GoW games are JRPGs?
Also, NieR Automata doesnt have a party system. You cannot equip stuff for 9S, same with NieR Replicant. Are they not JRPGs?
Also, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim has one of the coolest party managment system in games, yet It's declared an adventure game because the priority of the game lies in there. Such strict way to define genres are stupid and also halt innovation.

>By that Dark Souls is a JRPG, and it has nothing to do with what people expect from a JRPG.
It's literally a dungeon crawler. What do you think the first final fantasy games were about? Clearing dungeons. Dark Souls even has a leveling system you mentioned.

>Go tell a fan a traditional JRPG "Go play Dark Souls it's a JRPG" and they might be pretty disappointed because it's completely different from the genre they like.

Who's ""they"". You? Maybe, because you are a tourist who probably only played clair obscur and maybe a bunch of the popular JRPGs mainstream loves, like FF7.

I didnt play sekiro yet, so I cannot talk on It's mechanics. I heard from my friends that It's way more streamlined though.

Both Clair Obscur and FF10 are RPGs btw. But one of them is made in Japan. JRPGs are more than the game mechanics themselves. It's also about atmosphere, character design, writing and style. It's just how Japanese people make stuff is special in their own way. The same reason we have a term "WRPG" for Western games and eurojank for our europoor games lol
Japanese tried to make their own WRPG and It's called "Demon Souls". Doesnt play like a WRPG at all. It still has a Japanese touch (also It plays like shit), the same way exp33 still has a western touch on it's art design and writing. It can be more strictly analysed, to see the differences and similarites, but you have to play more games to get It.
Honestly I won't discuss this again.
I have the feeling everyone has his own definition. Which is fine for me.

Clair Obscur is clearly a JRPG for me.
For some it will not be. Like Dark Souls is a JRPG for some and not for me.
It's fine. Not a really a problem in the end.

And I have play many of them not just "mainstream loves like FF7".
