Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy III (US, SNES)

I'm about to introduce my wife to one of these two RPGs. She has finished Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga on the GBA by herself, so I figure she could handle one of these two games now. She's not a gamer by any means, but she does like a few games such as Pikmin 2, Donkey Konga, Mario games, Sonic games, and other general "girl friendly" games.

So, which would probably be the better RPG for her? I know there's a bit more depth in FFIII than Chrono Trigger, but I'm still a bit torn over what would be the better overall experience.

Any thoughts or opinions on the matter?
 
They both grabbed me and I really think you can't go wrong either way. Chrono Trigger might be the better choice for a first RPG though if you want to get her hooked by them.
 
Hmm ... I seem to remember enjoying both, but actually finishing Chrono Trigger on my first run through. FFVI just never held my attention that well.
 
Chrono Trigger I think is a better introductory RPG, but I think FFVI is the better game overall. VI could just be overload though for a firsttimer.

Oh she can handle it. My first RPG was fricken Ogre Battle, now THAT was overload.
 
FFIII by a mile.... People are acting like it's complicated, but it is jam packed with little tutorials as every new element of its gameplay is introduced.

Chrono Trigger is cool enough, but FFIII is exponentially better.
 
Chrono Trigger is a much better game. Chrono is great from start to finish while FFIII falls off during the world of ruin, it is a great game until the world of ruin.

If you want to get her a FF get her FFII, best FF EVER!
 
Both are excellent... I got started with FFIII/VIj (well, I'd played a few beforehand on rental, but that was the first to hook me)...

But I think CT would be a better starter RPG. It seems like something that would be easier to follow and grasp certain concepts and ideas, and get used to them. (Plus, built-in run button for the impatient, instead if needing to play for a half-hour or so until you can buy Sprint Shoes like in FFIII.)

FFII (US) is on its way right now. I found a complete set on eBay w/ box, manuals, inserts, maps, and even original plastic cartridge bag. It's not sealed, so I don't have a problem with her playing it.

Maybe I'll go Chrono, FFII, and finally FFIII.

I'd agree with this. Chrono Trigger is shorter, prettier, and generally less complex. FF VI was the first non-action RPG I played through and loved it, but in retrospect I was nearly overflowing with unrealized RPG love until I started noticing previews for FFIII in magazines, so it's not quite the same situation.
 
I think Chrono Trigger is for more of the casual RPGer. FF3 can get a bit complicated. That said, both are great games.
 
Man, that's like the toughest question in the world. They're both on my top 5 of all time. I'd go with FF3 just cuz it was released first. Girls like the opera bit. :)
 
The problem with letting her play Chrono Trigger is she will then be spoiled for any other RPG she ever plays. It's like having your first beer be a Guiness and then having to drink American beer for the rest of your life.
 
I'd say FF6.

My first RPG was Quest 64, which, needless to say, made me hate RPGs for years. It wasn't until I played FF6 that I fell in love, and to this day it's my 3rd favorite game ever
 
FFIII.

Chrono Trigger is boring as hell. It's alot simpler, the graphics are boring even if better, the dungeons are mindless treks, the storyline all over the place without any real cohesion.

Frankly I think they both pale compared to Superstar Saga, but FFIII's story progression more than makes up for the ancient system.

Indeed. Yasunori Mitsuda is hard to beat.

I like both games, but I would have to go with Chrono Trigger. Still, you can't go wrong with either game.
 
I would say that Chrono Trigger would make a better RPG for a noobie. I think the art style might also suit a females tastes better than FFVI (CT is a little more light hearted). Chrono Trigger and FFVI are two of the best games Square have made....you cant really go wrong either way.
 
No idea how battles in M&L are, so why not go to Chrono Trigger first, to go from two party members in the active party to 3, introducing the ability to swap party members into the team of three, then go to FF6 after, with the larger game and more party members that Chrono Trigger can break her into getting accustomed to?

As CT is typically shorter, use it as a 'breaking in' for FF6. As earlier said, have her try FF4 before 6 possibly, too.
 
The first half of FF6 is the same boring stuff each time. The second half has infinitely more variety, and as such, has more replay value and is more fun. :)
 
Chrono Trigger is a bit more lighthearted, a la Mario and Luigi (although not nearly to that degree) but it does have quite a bit of humor sprinkled throughout, I bet she would enjoy that better after playing M & L.

She definitely needs to play FFIV next, though.
 
IMO, Chrono Trigger would be the better choice to start her off with. There is a lot more going on in the beginning of the game (not to mention a better sense of WHAT is going on) and one doesn't really need to go out of their way to level up certain characters. The game is also much shorter (same for the replay value); so doing/getting everything shouldn't take her much time before she is ready to start on FFVI.

I've learned from experience that FFVI isn't for everyone. I've tried introducing some of my friends to old school RPGs in the past and Chrono Trigger was one of the only games to show any success. On the other hand, I've recommended FFVI to people who weren't even new to RPGs, but they were still overwhelmed by the game and unable to play it all the way through in it's entirety. I only had one friend in HS that actually managed to play FFVI from beginning to end and he needed my help to get through Kefka's Tower. I could only imagine what that would be like for someone that had never even played an RPG in their life.

I'd say to start her off with something "simple" like Chrono Trigger first and save the more "complicated" games like FFVI for when she has a feel for the games.
 
I'd go with Chrono Trigger - FF6's Esper system may be fairly overwhelming to a first time RPG player, as well as the nonlinear second half. Chrono Trigger is fairly straightforward and a really good introduction to the RPG genre, although it's far from my favorite one. Personally I wasn't much of an FF6 fan (mostly due to the nonlinear second half) but the game is still worth playing. Also I definitely recommend going for FF4 at a later date, it's a great game. Probably my favorite game ever when I was little.
 
Don't start her off with either of them. She will be disapointed with almost every rpg released after these two if you start her off with them. Start her off with something average like FFX and let her work her way up to the better games.

I'm currently playing M&L for my first time. Fantastic game (and quite possibly the best RPG i've played this gen)!

Not sure whether CT or FFIII would be the better choice. If you know what her tastes in art are, then narrowing down that decision should be a lot easier.

Personally I dig FFIII's "classical" style.
 
That reminds me: I haven't played ANY of the lufia games.

Gonna have to do that.
 
I agree with the folks suggesting FF4 rather than FF6 for someone who is starting out. I think FF6 is the superior game, but I'm not sure if it's the best introduction to the Final Fantasy "world." What I would do though is ask your wife what aspects of M&L:SS she really liked, and what she didn't like (or if you already have, tell us what her response was), and see if you can't make a better decision off that information...
