How could we know about a current CIA operation?

Someone's head is going to roll.

WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU ANNOUNCE THAT!?
YOU'RE THE FUCKING CIA. YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO INSIDIOUS SHIT SECRETLY AND THEN DENY EVERYTHING AFTERWARDS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE!!!

Good grief.

Maybe it already happened ;-)

i'm kind of worried here as this will only lead to electronic warfare proliferation. doubly so once these tools leak (or reverse engineered) to the general public. once out in the open, then tech companies will want to secure their own systems and that will lead to all sorts of slippery slopes for government digital security/control mechanisms that will affect every electronic device government, commercial and consumer.

i don't remember where, but i've heard security people describe 'stuxnet' as a proverbial 'trinity (atom bomb) event' since it has opened up the use of such powerful tools for governments to go ahead and exploit.

i think it is best to withhold these technologies until the real 'war' so-to-speak. i'm sure we can hurt putin in many ways, instead of going for tit-for-tat attacks. russia is already hurting, we don't want to put them in a corner where they'll do something rash that they can not take back.

Russia employs hackers that spend 18 hours a day at the computer. The creator of Tetris was one of them.

How does something like this even get out?

"Opening cyber doors?" (edit -derp didn't realize that image was a joke)

Only a fool would believe that the US hasn't already been pounding Russian (and Chinese) servers for years trying to break in. Fuck, we got caught spying on Germany a couple years ago, of course we're worming trying to worm our way through every computer in Russia. But Russia and China very tightly control their message and the media, there's no way they would announce their failures and vulnerabilities to the world like the US does.

Not sure announcing that they will do something will have any effects on the results of the operation.

I'm sure the CIA has some pretty hackers at their disposal.

This seems more like a deliberate leak; to what end I'm not sure. A bluff perhaps? Poking the bear for no reason isn't typically a good strategy.

First I thought this same thing. And then

I realized it's on probably purpose. It's either a loud threat or poorly veiled psy op

Russia has worked to try to manipulate the American electoral process and destabilize the country. That is tantamount to an act of war. The door has long been open.

There's not really any risk in letting this be known. It's not like the Russians don't know we know they've been attacking us. It's not like they don't know we have serious capability of the cyber. They were surely already wary of retaliation.

I eagerly await a statement about this from Trump. It'll come across as outrage but the kind of outrage you get when you attack someone's loved ones.

Sounds like they've already stolen documents/information and the white house is deciding what to do with it.

Seeing as the US is widely acknowledged as having the greatest capacity in the realm of cyber attacks, you'd think Russia would have used their first strike in a better way than a transparent attempt to affect the election.

Maybe they were already done half an hour ago.

Should've had the reports out by now then though.

EDIT: Seriously though Brakke has a point. They attacked us, retaliation is the least they can expect. No one wants their elections fucked around with.

So glad that the democrats are beating the war drums for WWIII.

Only Russia could've figured out the password to the DNC files was "obamabiden2012".

I can only hope that the republicans block Hillary's hawkishness out of pure partisan spite, but who am I kidding.

Okay, if you really insist

Nuclear holocaust is preferable to a Trump presidency.

I thought everybody does it, or is that only the excuse if the US does something?

You're right, we should just let Russia fuck us in the ass as they please. Putin is not an idiot, he has no interest in starting WW3. He seeks to take advantage of the same kind of weakness you are displaying to make incremental gains.

Yeah, they do, what's your point?

I'd be more surprised if they haven't hacked the shit out of Russia already. Remember, we pulled of Stuxnet on Iran, which is what big boy hacking is. We don't fuck around with this leaked email crap. This announcement was probably just to see how and if they react.

Yeah, they do, what's your point?

I think the point is that we are spiraling into war, simply because we got a dose of the poising we dish out. This is the first time that the US has been faced with a cyber power willing to push and push far, I feel like the US wants to set an example. Unfortunately Russia is the last country to set an example with because they don't just talk, they have the capability to back it all up. A cyber tit for tat that will shut everyone up soon enough, when gaffers can no longer browse gaf or gamers can no longer play online maybe this whole shit will take on a new dimension and would feel more real. The worst thing about our generation is the ignorance of what could happen, as evidenced by 90% of the people in this thread making jokes of a cyber war with Russia. Like there is no fear, we grew up in a world we're the United States was the dominant power so we do not know the terror of another military Superpower. I think it's a lesson that might be learned the hard way.

A blend of PR and anti-russia mindgames. i am certain that the level of information they are presenting to the world is exactly what they want to be publically available, and that any battle plans currently being prepared or executed were drawn up well before now.

slightly off topic but if you're someone famous/business leader/political leader etc and you're still not using encrypted emails, you're really stupid.

This seems more like a reassurance to Democrats and a warning shot to Russia that something is being done. I'm sure some things are already being done anyway before this announcement or leak. It's like the US is telling Russia that they are coming, Russia prepares and the US comes in anyway and break their walls to show Russia who is boss. I mean, they are dying demographically and we have actually successful in boxing them in economically (via cheap gas and trade deals with Europe).

Really curious as to what we can actually do to them. We've already wrecked their economy, but that has likely boosted Putin's strongman persona. Hard to embarrass a leader with no shame.

You seem awfully scared. I say we take the gloves off and show them what the US is really capable of.

Use up all the ink in their Fax Machines, that might actually finish off the Ruble.

They probably hacked the Russian networks already and are waiting on a Russian response to figure out exactly what they do in the event of a supposed massive cyber attack.
