This is PR and psychological warfare. Definitely.

i WISH we have a powerful ally as The Machine.
Plus, if it were Samaritan, many world governments would have already been infiltrated. This wouldn't have happened.

I think the point is that we are spiraling into war, simply because we got a dose of the poising we dish out. This is the first time that the US has been faced with a cyber power willing to push and push far, I feel like the US wants to set an example. Unfortunately Russia is the last country to set an example with because they don't just talk, they have the capability to back it all up. A cyber tit for tat that will shut everyone up soon enough, when gaffers can no longer browse gaf or gamers can no longer play online maybe this whole shit will take on a new dimension and would feel more real. The worst thing about our generation is the ignorance of what could happen, as evidenced by 90% of the people in this thread making jokes of a cyber war with Russia. Like there is no fear, we grew up in a world we're the United States was the dominant power so we do not know the terror of another military Superpower. I think it's a lesson that might be learned the hard way.

Russia is not a super power.

GAF? Is there absolute proof that Russia did, indeed, hack the DNC?
The FBI and several private cyber security firms all came to the same conclusion that Russia probably did it. And it's not like we have any reason to believe differently, given how the stolen information was distributed.

But no, no "absolute proof".

WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU ANNOUNCE THAT!?
YOU'RE THE FUCKING CIA. YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO INSIDIOUS SHIT SECRETLY AND THEN DENY EVERYTHING AFTERWARDS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE!!!

Good grief.

Ha, I think it's actually kinda genious.

This is a really bad idea. Don't go out like this, Obama.

Posts like these make me realize that not many people are as aware of the gap in tech and defense between the US and the ROW. It goes beyond better jets and tanks.

Biggest airforce in the world? U.S. Airforce. Second biggest? U.S. Navy.

Really curious as to what we can actually do to them. We've already wrecked their economy, but that has likely boosted Putin's strongman persona. Hard to embarrass a leader with no shame.
you go after his friends and business partners. fuck with their money and suddenly they will start playing ball.

Hint:

It's been going on.

It is like people have learned nothing from Wikileaks or Snowden. The US is the largest cyber warfare, surveillance, espionage and covert op conductor in the world. They have been doing this for years to enemies and allies alike.

Always liked the line from Ray Zalinsky auto parts king: "What the American public doesn't know is what makes them the American public".

This being announced is nothing more than a media and PR move. Solidifies in Americans minds Russia was behind the leak and we are retaliating, HooRah!

We never know because we are given a bullshit line of "National Security" or worse censorship on subjects like UFO. On on top of constant Media obfuscation as the election is proving with trump coverage alone, can't have an informed public when most of the information that is necessary is never told or worse twisted to suit one of the two top political parties.

The public doesn't care, otherwise there would be a push to get more info on this. It's easy to blame censorship or media agendas for it, but fact is people just don't care as long as it does not impact them. Honestly, I'm kind of the same with that. You don't see it going on, so you are not motivated to do anything with it.

It's kinda fascinating how different countries have talented hackers but aren't at the forefront of technology or the ubiquitous access a country like America and most Western countries have. I wonder how they find them. Do they just sit kids in front of computers and see if they're a natural.

Good. You shouldn't be able to fuck with another country without consequence. If Obama didn't respond, that's like a carte blanche to Putin to do whatever they want.

slightly off topic but if you're someone famous/business leader/political leader etc and you're still not using encrypted emails, you're really stupid.

doesn't work that way, since the receiver also has to enable it on their end.

Right? They are trying to fuck with our elections. At what point do you say enough is enough? I suppose we just have to keep letting them do it though, waiting for even worse things to happen because we need to be the bigger country. I really don't understand some of the posts in here. Maybe they like the Hillary leaks so they can ignore it.

They are probably putting the pieces into place to disable Perimeter and scramble launch keys so the US can launch a successful first strike on Russia.
