Nintendo is currently looking into providing SOME OF their older games with a complete visual makeover when users download them using the Revolution's upcoming online service, according to an interview with Nintendo president Saturo Iwata in the latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly.

"We are doing several experiments, including working with the original Super Mario Bros, with the new technology," said Iwata. "The game itself and the gameplay shall be identical, but the look will be different; it's possible that with Revolution, we may be able to see the old games with new looks."

The company isn't new to visual remakes. In 1993, Nintendo released Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES, which introduced new graphics for the first three Super Mario Bros. games.

Swapping 2D artwork is easy enough, but Nintendo will also be providing downloadable versions of their 3D-centric Nintendo 64 games. In that case, Nintendo doesn't have any solid plans, but says it's possible for 3D games to "look sharper" when played on Revolution.

If my old NES games are redone (like the Mario games are redone in Mario Allstar per example). Now i could see paying a couple of bucks to download.

We already have 2x Sai!
I'd imagine they're talking mainly filters like these. I don't really see Nintendo completely reworking all their old games... though maybe some will get it. Like offering the SNES versions of Zelda and Mario 1-3, or working all the DS enhancements into Mario 64.

I just hope all the N64 games get at least the same treatment Ocarina of Time got on the GCN.

Dave Smith gone, for this.

I'd like to see some third-parties take advantage of this. IGA finally getting his Castlevania Chronicles releases, courtesy of Nintendo's download service? I'd buy 'em!

I really wish they wouldn't do this...

If they upgraded them, why not just put them on some collection on DS or a disc for GCN or Revolution...

I'd like the downloaded ones to remain 100% true to the original, as in complete ports...

part of the reason is I hope I can play stuff like Secret of Mana and Dragon Warrior 4 in their original glory...

meh they need to say more than that to get my attention.

I agree. Nintendo needs to stop living in the past. Even if they had this capability on Gamecube I dont think it would've changed anything.

I think that young gamers (Playstation era or younger) won't really care for older games. Redo the graphic could be an incentive though. And i guess many hardcore or older gamer also want a fresher version of the game since they prolly own the originals. It's actually my case at that matter.

Let me download an "upgraded" Super Metroid when i purchase Metroid Prime 3 Nintendo, that's all I want.

If they so much as breath in Super Metroid's direction, I'm bombing Nintendo HQ.

I think there is a first person adventure mode planned? Hopefully they will still let you play the original. Maybe.

They should provide the games as two files... one which loads the original game, and one which launches it patched with a 2006/07 tileset where possible. Having said that, some games would benefit from new animation too.

Imagine if they took a cue from emulation and used higher res texture packs in N64 games too... *drool*

It'd be freaking hot if they could strike a deal with SEGA or something before this all hits off btw. If it had the SNES and Genesis library at its disposal as well as games thereafter and next gen Nintendo games, I would weep openly in the store as I bought it. I never should have traded those consoles away. I'm rebuilding my SNES collection now, and it's painful stuff.

Nintendo owns my soul... "you want my money?"... "here you go...". I'm hoping that they do somethign with some of the games, i've already accepted that it is going to be a few bucks to download the games. But a few bucks for hours of good times, well worth it.

Lets hope that any visual upgrades to NES, SNES and N64 games do not get botched like Ninja Gaiden Trilogy on SNES, which actually LOST some of the graphical effects from the original NES versions. i.e. parallax scrolling in NG3

This will help with those that argue "what is the difference from downloading these games to the revolution and playing them on emulator on your home computer."

This is good because even though some people play these on emu, people are going to want these NEWER version. It is still the same old story of Nintendo reselling the same old product, but it is battling the emu/rom side of things.

Living in the past isn't such a bad thing if the experience is that much better than that of the present.

yeah but there's still a lot of uncharted territory. I can't keep playing the same 5 Nintendo franchises over and over again.

Yuji Naka dropped hints that may happen...

Oh, boy. Another remake of SMB. I say release those three games the way they are. Move on to other games like Startropics, Dragon Warrior, Fire 'n' Ice, Kickle Cubicle. I don't care if they didn't make the games, as long as they get visually updated. (Drools at prospect of SNES style Startropics or Dragon Warrior.) As long as they do indeed keep the gameplay the same. NO CHANGING THE NAMES OF THE CHARACTERS THIS TIME!

Is this really news? Has Nintendo EVER had a system that didn't at some point have remakes of their old games with improved graphics? Come on.

this is what i hate about the games industry, the constant need to remake games. game publishers are so quick to mimic cinema, maybe one thing they should scratch off the list is "remake shit."

are we going to remember how Resident Evil looked on PlayStation or on the GameCube? both? which one is the definitive version? just because the Cube version has a way better production doesn't mean anything to me.

Why can't we just leave things be and move on to better and more original ideas? I like the idea of having a huge library of classic Nintendo games on the Rev, but I do NOT like the idea of them being visually or aurally upgraded

I want online functionality more than I want them to fuck up the classic style of SNES titles. I just imagine Yoshi's Island being remade to look like Yoshi's Story. ugh

Ok I'll bite, explain.

Sequence breakers, so you're forced to do things in order rather than use tricks and so forth to get to one place without having to get that one special item.

This is good news. But I will need details before I can get excited.

What will that retarded chick with big boobies newhire from IGN say about this now?

Just small ones? She looked kinda fat so I assumed big boobs...

Judging by Nintendo Puzzle Collection, I wouldn't expect anything cutting edge... just some hi-res art here and there...
