Ahh, the click of death. You're fukt, and so is your hard drive.

don't worry too much. My laptop's hard drive started clicking right after i got it and it's still going strong after two and half years. although, I wouldn't be surprised if it just flat out crash and fail on me one day.

I'd suggest HURRYING THE HELL UP, matlock. Clicking can mean death in as little as ten minutes. If you have important stuff like essays or something, get them off that hdd *immediately*.

Are all laptop HD the same? I'm afraid mine will poop out soon too. Its a dell and they want 110 bucks for a 30GB HD.

Check disk for errors, automatically repair. Dos command for what's essentially scandisk.
Uh, scandisk has been in DOS since at least 5.0 or something. chkdsk is not want you want for that. Run scandisk and do a full surface scan if you want to actually check something.

My iBook has made extremely loud clicking noises (as in you can hear it from the room next door, all doors closed) from the HDD since I got it 2 and a half years ago. It still works fine although it takes about 10 minutes to boot up since the HDD is fuxored :)

Once she's running though, there ain't no stopping her.

chkdsk /r locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. It also fixes errors on the disk. Some laptop hard drives seem to naturally click randomly. I work on different Dell laptop's at work. If you experience lock-ups while the drive is clicking with a tempo (like a metronome), then most likely it is the click of death and you need to back up your stuff fast.

Believe it or not, I think most laptops tend to get noisier after time. From what I've seen of the Dell's I've worked with the last 7/8 years, the noise does not necessarily denote the death of the drive.

The clicking is from a movable part of the hard-drive so i doubt any amount of scandisk can save you now.

Same thing is happening to my C drive, and creating the perfect excuse for the wasting of all my money on a new PC for HL2.

Is there a chance a bearing on a case fan just went off for a short amount of time? When I flipped the laptop vertical to check the serial number, it corrected itself.
