I hope he gets cans and wins. I'm not even a wrestling fan, but UFC and even MMA in general just had so much more buzz around it when Brock was fighting. Improved the sport overall imo despite the carnival nature of it. UFC is at such a nadir right now. 182 (Jones-Cormier) isn't even sold out ffs. I hope this is more of a Brock situation and less of a Toney situation because the industry really needs it, but I could see it going either way.

Unless he's fighting a flyweight in a catchweight bout, CM Punk isn't LnPing anyone.
They have too many events with not enough non-mediocre fighters to fill them out. And most of their good fighters don't have the charisma or marketability to have any mainstream appeal.
Guys on UFC PPVs aren't noobs. Even if they're 0-0 in the UFC, they've got MMA backgrounds and have fought professionally in other outfits. Punk is a total noob, not ever fought anyone. You put him in with a 24 yo kid who's been training MMA for ten years and who's fought in Europe and Japan, how is it gonna go?

Ideally CM Punk would be fighting a 36-40 year old journeyman who has a near-parity win-loss record. Putting him in against someone with less than three fights is too unpredictable.
This isn't about ensuring that Punk wins, it's more a case of giving Punk a meaningful fight. At this stage of his life, giving him another guy who is starting out does neither fighter any favours.

Yeah, except the fact that Brock Lesnar actually has a legitimate amateur wrestling background like Kurt Angel and Jack Swagger.
Bellator manages to find scrubs all the time. Every Bellator there's at least one guy on the main card with <10 fights and ~50% W-L fighting in Bellator for the first time. Usually it's against one of their "up and comers." I've got no issue with UFC doing the same thing. With a full training camp, I could see any athlete having a chance against a low-experience "veteran" who doesn't even fight full-time. The lack of a wrestling background means there are no easy outs like LNP though. Also hurts to be anywhere but HW. But this talent pool you're talking about guys who fight on local circuits every few months, win some lose some and have day jobs.

Of course they're totally different, because he's a celebrity. It hurts UFC's legitimacy as a sport that they desperately crave. The NFL wouldn't let a celebrity play quarterback for the Seahawks even if it would probably draw a huge crowd. He'd have to go through training camp and make the team (which is hard, ask brock)and then have to earn his starting spot.
Brock was the national wrestling champion in college.
Brock Lesnar was an NCAA Champion. Aka he had legit wrestling background.

They are going to find a guy for Punk to fight that has like zero stand up. Someone who will make Jake Shields look like Robbie Lawler. No risk of Punk getting KO'd and it turns into a glorified amateur BJJ grappling session.

Problem is that CM Punks is only a new blue belt at best. Most UFC fighters are at least blue belt level. So the fight becoming a grappling match wouldn't be great either.
I'd love to be proven wrong though. If he trains with good people, trains twice a day, diets well, and also takes recovery seriously, he can go a long way in a short amount of time.

Brock Lesnar is a two time all-american wrestler. He actually knows stuff.
I mean, Brock only beat Punk with interference and Brock had him out weighed by at least 60 pounds. Punk has a real shot, friends. To the best of my records, he's only been knocked out once and has never tapped out. He's tuff enuff. Most of his losses come from bullshit ref decisions. Mazzagatti levels of horse shit. He also defeated the best pure striker the sport has ever known inside of a cage, so this isn't new territory for him, friends.
