CNET: Xbox One won't play 3D Blu-rays -- for now

First thing I'll try out when I get a PS4(it better support it *shakes fist*)

I wanna move my PS3 to another room.

That's pretty lame. I recently got a 3D TV and was thinking about the One for media now that Blu Ray is onboard. Might as well buy a cheap PS3.

Can't say it bothers me that much.

3D movies really aren't that great IMO. Good for the first few moments where it looks like the TV has depth but the moment you try to look at something the camera isn't focusing on it really starts to strain the eyes and brain.

Why would you build an "all in one media center for your living room" and not include 3D blu-ray playback?
Probably cheaping out on the licensing or something.

Crazy, it's totally crazy. The PS3 has been able to play 3D Blurays for 3 years now.

Hmm guessing it might have to do with the xone menus and snap. They may have not had enough time to implement this.

Wasn't 3d on its way to obscurity once again??

Oh wow, I know someone who this will actually big a big deal for. Seems like a weird issue though, I didn't even know there was a difference.

I play more 3d blurays than CDs or mp3s on my console so this actually affects me more.

Just watched star trek into darkness 3d the other day.

It's definitely not become THE NEXT BIG THING but tons of TVs coming out today support 3D and there are at least a handful of excellent 3D movies a year. Gravity was the balls in 3D, I'll be buying it when it comes out.

Haha

That's pretty sucky. I thought they were going for the all in one media centre idea? Not much of an all in one if it's missing media features...

Man, this sucks. Luckily I'll have the PS4 for this. PS4 better play 3D movies dammit.

Xbox One doesn't support 3D Blu-Rays, period. No games or movies.

PS4 supports 3D gaming, which would pretty much confirm the Blu-Ray movies will work (same technology/license) once you patch Blu-Ray playback.

Dat CNET subheadline: "CNET has confirmed that for better or worse the Xbox One won't play 3D Blu-ray movies at launch."

How could that possibly be "for better"? Even if you're not a 3D movie-watcher.

Really interested to hear the reasoning for this....for either console...

Haha!...yeah...can't even imagine how it could be a bad thing to include the format lol

Wait--is the quote in the OP saying the PS4 doesnt support 3D movies either? I really hope not..

I don't think we know for sure, but PS4 already supports 3D games, both AC4 apparently and Trine 2's PS4 version (from the Trine 2 PS4 thread) have 3D support, so since the way it's done is the same it's probably already supported on 3D Blu-ray movies too.

Edit: Actually according to this PS4 will support 3D Blu-ray movies at launch too, after the update:

Engadget said:
On the other hand, Sony has just confirmed to us that the PS4 will definitely come with both 3D Blu-ray playback (requires the 1.50 firmware update and then a one-time activation) and 3D gameplay (albeit a current lack of 3D titles).

gutted! now I have to rethink my whole media centre to keep my blu ray player in!

Hopefully this is just a problem with the UI overlaying it, maybe they need a 3D UI because they'll assume people will leave their glasses on?

3d in movies is shit anyways
invented to charge extra money in cinemas

go watch world war z in 3d
the feel of getting ripped off

Welp...I guess this settles it.

I was on the fence as to which console I was going to get at launch, but since I have a 3DTV and an extensive 3D Blu Ray collection, I'll be going with the PS4 at launch.

This does not seem important to me at all. Non news, but I guess for the few people who it matters to, a PSA isn't all that bad.

Next question...will it pass through 3D content from a cable box using its HDMI IN??...there isn't a ton of it out there...but it's out there...

Not disputing the fact that they stick it to people with cinema prices, but at home with a good 3DTV? You get the BD for the same price, and it looks fucking glorious on movies that were filmed in 3D (pretty sure WWZ's 3D was done in post production). Prometheus and Avatar are visually stunning in 3D, for instance.

See you on live for titanfall? Can't say this effects me whatsoever I don't have a 3D setup and I hate 3D but would have been a nice option

Pretending the concept of numerical lineage doesn't apply, Xbone nickname, not actually "all in one"...

Really should have kicked some sense into that marketing roundtable than be hypnotised by their bullshit, huh, MS?
