its rolling out now so enjoy :)

I'm a TimeWarner floater in the strategic apps group. CNN is one of my 'customers'. I also do a lot of stuff for sports illustrated, money, nascar, mobile, cartoon network and a few others that I can't discuss.

Are you doing chapters with images?

Would be nice for Market News for the charts to come up for the stock/market being discussed. Pictures to go along with news stories, etc.

God, I haven't talked to Ravi, let alone heard that name, in yeeeeears. What the hell is he about to these days?

You'll be able to get this on iTunes once it's submitted to Apple, or once Apple takes note and adds it themselves.

So pretty much, you're paying to download a radio broadcast.

And you wonder why they don't have an FM tuner in it. :p

Well, podcasting = free. And its more of like having an FM Tivo rather than a Tuner.

To get the news updates from CNN on iTunes go to advanced>subscribe then type in feed://www.cnn.com/services/podcasting/newscast/rss.xml

It's all free. Apple's putting a nice interface and one-stop-"shop" for Podcasts...all for free.

There, of course, will be premium podcsats that content providers CAN offer...but basically anyone with a podcast can submit their URL to Apple and it will be listed for others to find. All of this is free.

Unfortunately there is no real audio/visual synchronization in podcasting in the 'standard' form. But it is something that has been discussed by others in the podcasting arena. You're more likely to see that when we get VCasting (video podcasting).

Phoenix, here's what I mean..

In addition to Tuesday’s iTunes update, Apple quietly released a new program called Chapter Tool. Even though it’s still in beta, it’s a neat little Terminal application that is available as a free download through the iTunes Music Store.

Chapter Tool allows you to turn your podcasts into “enhanced podcasts” that allow you to create chapters within an MPEG4 AAC file created by iTunes.

It allows you to make chapters and have images associated with each. So when listening in iTunes or on an iPod Photo, new album art is displayed for each chapter. So if you talk about a certain stock, you can make that a chapter and the image can be the chart.

Any plans on this?

I can't speak to this. What I would strongly recommend is that if you want to see these sort of features, you should send in feedback saying such. Something that only works in iTunes would be a tough sell though even if the tech people want to do it :)

Ok, will do. But if I read it right, it will play OK anywhere, it just won't have the enhanced features. Of course, it is AAC...but that should play mostly anywhere since it's straight MPEG-4.

Best way to see this in action is to subscribe to Apple's iTunes New Music Tuesday Podcast.

Each song is its own "chapter", with CD image cover and length of segment. And Apple's even snuck in a purchase link too, where the album artwork is.
