CNN: Trump says his tax bill is 'moving along.' Except it doesn't exist

"Our tax bill is moving along in Congress, and I believe it's doing very well," he said at a Rose Garden speech on Thursday.

One problem: There is no tax bill.

The only evidence of a White House tax strategy is a bunch of rhetoric from Trump's economic team and a one-page outline hastily presented to the public in April. Trump called the proposal "one of the biggest tax cuts in American history."

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn began pressing Republican members of Congress in mid-May to get on board with Trump's tax agenda. But no legislation has emerged.

"I think a lot of people will be very pleasantly surprised," Trump said of the phantom tax bill. "The Republicans are working very, very hard. We'd love to have support from the Democrats, but we may have to go it alone. But it's going very well."

Historically, tax reform has been among the most difficult tasks for Washington to accomplish. Just about every legislator has a pet tax incentive that he or she is unwilling to part with. Even in a GOP-controlled House and Senate, Republican lawmakers could splinter if they are asked to back a plan that many economists and budget analysts warn will increase deficits.

So far, the White House has insisted that the plan will "pay for itself" through economic growth. But there is no evidence to suggest tax cuts can pay for themselves. At best, growth may make up for a fraction of the cost.

The Trump administration had initially hoped that tax reform could be accomplished before Congress' August recess. But without an actual bill to debate, even Mnuchin told the Financial Times recently that his time frame is "not realistic at this point."

Trump's Rose Garden message was delivered as an aside in the middle of a speech that explained his rationale for pulling the United States out of the Paris climate agreement.

In the same address, the president took credit for having created "more than 1 million private sector jobs." In fact, 594,000 have been created since he took office.

The best tax bill, you'll see. Shillary would never have dreamt up such a great bill. Even if she did it would have leaked way before it made it to congress with how insecure her emails are. She wouldn't have the stamina to create such a great bill supported by the amazing people that attended my inauguration.

So even less substance than any of the stuff that he normally pulls out of his ass?

I'm sure this imaginary bill is doing great in his mind. Maybe it makes him feel better about himself.

You mean he's only good for taking something away? Noooooooo. Dude is the poster boy for failing upwards.

An old ass Paul Ryan in that regard.

I really hope no one expects Trump not to lie his ass off any chance he gets. It's all he's ever had to get him through life.

Is this an op-ed? It doesn't seem like one.

It was explicitly labeled a "report" when credit was given to a second writer so
He is a CNN Moneystream columnist and it reads like an op-ed, so I would say it is. It certainly isn't a news report, but is analysis, which fits into the op-ed category.

I also don't think it is proper to copy and paste an entire article...

Can we declare him the worst U.S president in the history of presidents already? He makes Bush look like a genius.

is this guy a fucking idiot? How is this even possible. He doesn't even know what he's doing.

Not sure why this a question.

There's a ton of dumb statements he's made. He once said that our GDP is below zero, which makes no sense at all and is impossible.

But we also know that he likely doesn't know much about macroeconomics and says whatever is on his mind so it doesn't surprise me that he would be making that statement.

Can't lose with the tax bill if you don't write one

This is the same thing as a kid bragging to his friends that his dad is a billionaire and owns Nintendo or something.

It's stupid schoolyard shit that people grow out of at around 10 years old. Except it's coming from a grown man, and the president of the US.

This man thinks the outlawing of ASBESTOS is a ruse by the "move

The man deciding on the future of our global environment wants more people working with ASBESTOS...

Let that sink in, and answer your own question.

As frightening as it is that someone this dumb is running the country, since day 1 of his campaign it's been extremely obvious that he has very minimal mental faculties. Almost all of his limited brain power is used for insults and self-aggrandizement. It's literally the only two things he's capable of doing.

I'm sure he truly believes it exists.

Me too.

If it wasn't for his dad and then the Russians he would be a raving lunatic on the street.

It doesn't matter. His base will believe him despite the fact that these things are public record and they could just check them themselves.
I thought that question was settled ages ago
And yet I never cease to be amazed.

Knowing nothing didn't stop him winning. In his mind, he must be right about everything because he won.
Reality as a democracy, interesting concept.

Not sure why this a question.

The thing is, I get him being stupid when it comes to economics, or maths, or really almost anything but to be so profoundly misinformed about something he is doing and the day-to-day running of his own administration is beyond the pale for me. Either that or he's a compulsive liar.

I actually didn't know that. I'll get back to you when that's properly sunken in.

True but much like I said above, assuming someone is an idiot is fair enough but assuming he would have literally no idea what people around him are doing and/or make shit up just for the sake of saying something is insane. Like, why even bother?

How much more proof do those in charge need that he is mentally ill and needs to be removed from office immediately?

Good Lord, what is happening in the States?

THE BEST TAX BILL IN HUMAN HISTORY

The Best tax bill in human history? At this time of year? At this time of day? In this part of the country? Localized entirely within your office?

Yes.

May we see it?

No.

The sad part is he's probably not even lying in this instance, in the sense that he doesn't even know there is no tax bill moving through congress, he thinks there is just because of that one page proposal from months ago. Just like he thought the AHCA passing the House meant it was now done and the ACA was repealed.

Nothing will happen until mid terms next year. If the democrats win big, then that will send a message that the GOP can't afford to ignore.

We're five months in and every day gets worse. This rhetoric needs to stop. Is it possible he remains until midterms? Yes. Is it an absolute? No.

I'm not one of those people that thinks Trump's immune to everything. I just know that the current GOP care about party over country and until they see results that supporting Trump could hurt their chances at reelection, they won't do a damn thing about it. Midterms is our best shot at forcing the GOP to do their damn job.

The best thing I can expect from Trump is that he thinks he's doing so many things, but in reality, is doing nothing. That's the ideal scenario at this point until he gets the boot.
