I don't understand why the Marry Cheney thing is an issue at all. What's wrong with pointing out that she is a lesbian? It's not the first time her sexuality has been brought up in the context of politics. It's not as though Kerry insulted her or the Cheney family with that comment.

Because Kerry was seen to win all 3 debates by most polls so they need to nitpick something out of it to complain over. The clip of Mary Cheney mom saying that "Kerry isn't a good man" is hilarious. Funny how she and her husband backs a guy who's looking to prevent her daughter from ever marrying someone because of her sexual orientation, but Kerry is the bad guy.

Yeah, this whole thing is pretty crazy. While I agree that Kerry was trying to make a point about the Bush adminstration's hypocrisy or ignorance over gay issues, the reaction to his statement has turned into the kind of reaction you expect if Kerry had said that Bush was a wife beater. The opposition is grasping for straws because Kerry did well in all three debates. They needed something to slow or even destroy that momentum that Kerry had picked up from his performance in those debates. Unfortunately, Kerry gave them something to really work with.

If that's the case, then why would Kerry mention Mary at all? He could have used someone that had no connections to the candidates at all.
Out of curiosity, who would your better example be? One that most people would recognize, and as good an example of someone who wouldn't be expected to choose such a lifestyle.

I understand why certain people are trying to make it an issue. The same people would make an issue out of anything Kerry does if they thought it would hurt his reputation. What I don't understand is how something as harmless as this could get any traction at all.

Easy--homosexuality is still a bad word in America.

Respecting her for being a lesbian is not an attempt to split the conservative base, but going out of your way to mention it twice on two major televised events IS in my opinion. It came off as a political dirty trick and the Kerry camp or anyone else for that matter shouldn't be surprised at the reaction is caused.
You know, I would respect this position if the topic of Mary Cheney being a lesbian wasn't discussed AT GREAT LENGTH by both sides in the VP debate.

So I'm calling bullshit all around.

Was Kerry's Mary Cheney comment necessary? No. Was there anything wrong with it? Well, no. It was more his intention that people can be irritated by, but it was still pretty innocent. That people are trying to justify the Bush administration making this into a scandal, rather than acknowledging that it is obviously a political tactic to get the heat off Bush who performed so poorly in the debates.... it makes me die a little inside.

Now, that people seem to care enough in that it appears to have effected Kerry in the polls, after he had drawn even, I've lost all hope in Americans.
