CoD: Black Ops 3's campaign doesn't allow you to change race

Yeah, your 1000hrs in MP mode instead will sure teach them.

Fight the power!
The thing is, they don't need to be taught anything.

Though I would love to see either a black main character or an all black cast in a Cod. Or just a better mix.

I'm not white but seriously, who gives a shit...

Talk about creating issues for no reason... "1 step forward 500 steps back"? Chill out

When I first saw it thought it might be because they don't want to also have to do different colors of skin in the various first person shots of your arms doing things, but those are robot arms for most of the game.

Then why have 9 different shades of White?

And motion capture shouldn't to my knowledge determine the skin color.

Unless you wanted the same white people in the OP with extreme tans, then they would've had to put it in the work to get different people of color animated without it looking jank.

Why the two main characters are so mayolicious is free game, but why Treyarch didn't make multiple ethnicities for a character that has a lot of screen presence isn't.

Does a character creator HAVE to allow every combination of human being possible? Not trying to be pissy, I fully support diversity in video games, but I'm not convinced of the argument that each game must represent everyone. It cannot possibly do so.

The "That's the character they intended for you to play" argument doesn't hold water here for me in this case. There is nothing about the characters in BO3 that makes them appear as human beings anyway. Just spouting a bunch of military special force movie clichés and wall-running to the next action setpiece.

Could go either way though. The player character in BO3 seems bland enough that any person from any race could fill it in, or he's just bland enough that he isn't worth going that direction.

If you don't give a shit, why are you even posting? And "I'm not white"? Really? As if that somehow makes your lack of giving a shit more meaningful.

Must be nice to always be represented.
I don't think he (or anyone) cares enough for it to "feel nice". It's f nothing.

I don't think I've ever even stopped to check whether a game has a Latino option (whatever that would look like lol), because it'll make absolutely no difference. The game is no better and no worse for having or lacking textures and you're no more or less represented by these killing robots because their skin texture is any lighter than yours.

But enough people complain to make me feel I'm missing some big detail. I just don't see it

Because the character actress they picked was white and so was the main actor. For multi-player they are easily represented with a wide variety of ethnicities and skin color.

It's like imagine they motion captured Kevin Spacey. They can make him tanned, bald, goatee, beard scruff but can they give him black/dark skin, an afro, make him look Asian and make it realistic?

Campaign assets are different than multi-player assets. These probably cost them hundreds a and hundreds of hours and tons of money to do. Would be ridiculous expecting several different character actors to do the same for the entirety of the campaign over and over. Are you white Lime? Because if you are, you a disservice in my opinion with these kinds of threads, where it's not as cut and dry as you make it seem. And you're already seeing pushback, even from people of colour like myself. There are people of colour as supporting characters, there are several different ethnicities and genders in multiplayer, and the main character in the campaign can be a woman too, but you've invalidated almost all of that with the post about how you can be 9 different white women and ignoring it's one character actor. Read up on how hard motion capture is. Watch the Halo 5 Sprints. See what Mike Colter, Nathan Fillion go through to be captured etc.

because it is not only whites who buys the game.

did you know that the USA is a multi ethnic country yet still today white is the only color available in the game.

no progress has really been made.

Seems more like a specific character with some tune options than an avatar customization.
Yeah, it's still weird that there's not just some skin color selection. That should be one of the easiest things to change about a model.

Edit, just noticed that the face of the character actually doesn't change. So if it's always the same actor they perhaps didn't want to digitally blackface them.

I'm not sure if outrage is the right reaction but it was super weird to me that they spent time on making nine different models of the same characters. It gave the impression of having options when really there's only two.

I actually backed up in the options twice because I thought I was missing something.

Thanks for answering my question, I wasn't aware the voice actors were the mo-cap actors for the game.

Yeah, I think they first started using performance capture with the original Black Ops

http://www.imdb.com/video/demo_reel/vi1663409689

I'm still waiting on the day we get Mass Effect/Fallout-esque character creators in these games. That would be rad.

The issue with that is that they'd have to drop performance capture across the board. There isn't a performance capture system that'll account for the variety in facial structures that a character creator can have. And then you couldn't have the other characters with actual performance capture because your character would look really awkward compared to their animations. So it's either all or nothing.

...really bro? That's some top tier hyperbole right there and you should feel embarrassed to be the person to have typed it.

Oh no! It's the end of world. This really isn't that big of a deal.

I saw the character selection and noticed the oddity and then continued to play. Didn't ruin my experience. But then again, that's just me.

Some people care about this, some don't. I don't see nothing wrong with him voicing his opinion.

Ah, searching for more racism where that is clearly not the intention. Rah rah evil white people & etc...

Come on. Its clearly one guy and one woman with slightly different looks. Does the race card always have to get pulled nowadays?

Did anyone call the developers evil?

Character creators that don't let you choose race are worthless. It's why I never picked up the Fable series.

It's not an actual character creator in the sense of something like Mass Effect or Fallout. You're playing as a preset character but you can change their skin tone slightly and their hair.

Okay but read this post:

Like, it's cool if you don't give a shit about what your character looks like, I'm so happy that it didn't ruin your video game, but don't be ignorant and try to pretend that representation (or lack of) doesn't matter to a lot of people, whether it be in video games, movies, tv shows, or other forms of media.

Edit: that said, I'm on the side that sees that it's clearly meant to be a protagonist editor, not a creator, so it's much less like mass effect/fallout. Color me disappointed regardless, though.

Its just a carry-over from the multiplayer. You get nine variations of the multiplayer characters to unlock, but you can't make Seraph NOT Seraph. Her specific facial features, her ethnicity, that's her, period.

a4GxUSx.jpg

You can't make her into a white man, she's a specific character. Just like the protagonists of the game.

Disappointed they went from Troy Baker looking main character to this pretty generic looking dude. That's a serious downgrade IMO. This guy looks like he failed the audition for a Gears of War game.

Lol I laughed out loud when I saw that article.

Are people going to complain about any game that only has a white protagonist from here on out?

Attempting to be politically correct has created a whole new wave of pussification.

So it's better to not even try? Ok then.

Lol, apparently you can't even give her a face.

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, I'm ignorant & white, so I appreciate the input/criticism, and I don't want to make matters worse than they already are. I thought Shareef Jackson made some good and valid analysis of this and that the example of Blops 3 was relevant to discuss since it prides itself as being "diverse" with its female character creation but only having 18 different options of White, while also being a insanely popular mainstream hit that millions of people play. These things made me think it appropriate to discuss, but I totally get it if you think it isn't okay for the topic of diversity.

So I guess that the cost of animation and its technical limitation in facial motion capturing hinder the customization options in terms of racial representation. If we think this is a limitation by the actor and the facial animation technology, then I guess it could be better to disregard customization and instead just focus on the fact that yet another white dude/woman gets to be the center of the story with the most agency. However, if this is a wrong discussion to have and people think it harms the conversation or the ones most affected (i.e. 'wrong battle to pick'), please lock this thread.

no progress has really been made.

Include a female character in a campaign that relies on facial capture. No progress. Where's the black option?

Include black character. No progress. Where's the Chinese?

Include Chinese. No progress. Where's the Indian?

Include Indian. No progress. Where's the indigenous American?

Include Indigenous american. No progress. Where's the Arab?

Include Arab. No progress. Where's the transperson?

Include transperson. No progress. Where's the Vietnamese?

Your budget is now gone, and you still haven't represented one tenth of desired diversity.

Every inclusion is indeed admirable, but to dismiss each effort and investment as irrelevant when other omissions exist is self-defeating.

REALLY?

What does any of this post even mean? Want to expound?

Its 2015, if you can't cover the basic races don't bother with a character creator. Its strange that the campaign is like this because the specialists actually do a decent job of basic representation.

Yeah that's what it looks like. I can understand the disappointment though.

Here is Mike Colter as Spartan Locke in Halo 5. This is his campaign asset. This probably took 343 hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to do. They can make his skin slightly lighter, give him an afro, braids, a goatee, a full beard. But they can't make him look any different than this.

That same issue happens in Black Ops 3. They're got two motion capture actors for the campaign. And they've tried to vary them up, different beards, hair coolor, tanned skin, paler skin. But they can't essentially do blackface, nor can they make them look Asian or whatnot. The multi-player has several different ethnicities, Asian, black etc. Just crazy, even when games are super progressive, and have men and gender lead campaign players, several people of colour as supporting characters, several different ethnicities and races in multi-player, it's just not enough.

OK, I didn't start the MP yet since I wanted to finish the campaign first. With this additional context I get what's going on now.

The devs probably didn't consider that some people would find this weird with so many other games offering full custimization.
