COD2 360 - Worst LIVE MP launch title?

Jesus Christ, I've been trying to play off and on all day, and I think I might have had 2 lag-free games. I'm surprised no one's started a thread here yet about how truly terrible the LIVE MP is. It's not mentioned in any of the reviews I've read, and I've only read a few posts mentioning it here. I can't believe the game was released with such a poor Live interface. No hosting options, no map selection, no forced team balance (I played a few 8 player games where I was the only person on the opposing team for a while). They should have just left the Live options off altogether if they weren't going to bother spending any time making them work properly. What a bust.

Yeah, I agree the SP is fantastic, but I don't see where the extra $10 over the PC version is justified. You get more MP options for less money on PC, and that makes no sense at all to me. 50% of the reason I bought it was for the MP (the COD games have always been great fun on the PC, so I assumed I'd get the same experience here).

BUT BEST SP 360 LAUNCH TITLE

Even then it's still plagued by a game threatening glitch. Thankfully I didnt encounter it at all or I'd be pissed TOTAL

Multiplayer sucks balls. 8 players total, can't choose maps (think of Halo 2 matchmaking....without the matchmaking stuff). Frequent laggy games...

I love how there's an option to play unranked or ranked games even though there's no ranking system at all. This game was totally rushed to make it at launch. Game runs very sweet but damn the multiplayer options is one of the worst ever

If my insanely laggy, Count the frames per second Ridge Racer experience is the norm, I don't see how that could fail to take the cake.

Activision says deal with it.

What was implemented in Call of Duty 2 is the basic interface to XBox Live. If you would like to play with your friends on Call of Duty 2 you should make sure you are taking advantage of the tools provided to you through the xbox live interface. Make sure you friends are set to approval status AND are on your friends list. XBox Live will attempt to connect you to people who are both your friends and people you have given an approval rating before it tries to match you with random people. You can also try not selecting quick match and specifying game parameters, these parameters will attempt to be matched first and if all of you select the same parameters you are more likely to be put together.

As it stands now there is nothing for Activision to acknowledge. The interface is functional. The tools that you have been provided with work. It's not necessarily what you want and I will certainly make note of that for future reference by us, but at this point the interface is at is is and this is highly unlikely to change now that the game is released. Sorry.

Assholes.

Um, you know about the bug where you need to disconnect your PC in the dash, right? You can't compare a simple bug (which will likely be fixed via patch) to horrendous design flaws.

Sounds like you need to disconnect your 360 from your computer (RR online bug)

That's bullshit. A lobby setup is practically non-existent in this game, and to make it worse, the game kicks you out to the main menu after each multiplayer game. So you have to set up a game, jump into the 'lobby', invite your friends before the spots get filled up...ugh.

Can't these games be patched? They should be working on a patch and fix the damn mess

great, so then I can hear people calling me a "fag" more clearly.

Funny, I've not had any issues with 360 LIVE. But then I have enough friends to never have to worry about it. Or maybe I just put them on the non-preferred list and never play with them again?

You get what you look for?

this is actually a worse lobby situation than Mechassault and that one was bad. Luckily they fixed that one, so hopefully?

I cant believe the same people that published Wolfensten published this.

Some people are trying to start a petition for a patch (or at least get some type of response to the problems) on the IWNation and Xbox.com boards:

I don't think it's going to work. They already have your $60, and I'm pretty sure the lack of a standard Hard Drive makes patching games difficult. Plus, from what I hear there are several problems with the MP on the PC version, and the lack of response to the complaints has led to server hosts threatening a boycott:

Oh, well. I'll be renting COD3 before I make another blind purchase like this one.

Well with that response, Activision just made my decision 10 times easier. I was debating on which to get PDZ or COD2, now with that stance Activision helped me choose PDZ.

Xbox executables averaged only about 5MB. Room for plenty of those on a memory card.

That's good to know. Hopefully if enough people raise a stink about it they'll at least patch in some type of hosting option, then. I know all those options are already available on system link.

Oh god, do NOT get me started.

The shitty Live support is well documented, but the system link is the icing on the cake. I had 2 360s at a friends house and we thought, hey lets do some system link COD2! But guess what, it doesn't even allow split screen in system link! You'd need 16 Xbox 360s, 16 copies of COD2, and 16 TVs to play 16 player system link. Why the fuck even bother putting this shit in the game if it's so utterly useless? The back of the box should say "This game has multiplayer...but not really."

I think it's high time we start demanding reviews of the multiplayer component of games--at least for Xbox Live games, where you're spending money for the honor of playing online. It seems like a really great multiplayer component can boost a games review score (Halo 2, Splinter Cell), but it seems a really horseshit useless multiplayer component has no impact (note COD2s numerous glowing reviews--it's even rated higher than the PC on gamerankings, despite the PC having better multiplayer).

COD2 deserves a full point knocked off from every review for such useless multiplayer. I'd seriously prefer no multiplayer to this, since at least then no one is going to buy the game thinking they can actually play with their friends online.

What's the incentive? It's a highly rated game with great sales. Don't fix what isn't broke, right?

That sounds horrible. It sounds like the Halo 2 Xbox Live setup except even worse.

I'm definitely not buying this game now. I agree game reviewers need to start doing a better job reviewing multiplayer. I refuse to buy any "online" games that don't let you choose the maps or customize your own gameplay settings and then just kick you out to the main menu after every match.

What a bunch of crap!! They aren't even going to take responsibility for not implementing BASIC XBL FUNCTIONS in a game?! You've got to be friggin' kidding me!! They just killed the sale of CoD3 on the XBox360 for me...that's for DAMN sure. They could get off their lazy duffs and patch this easy!! Hell if LucasArts can add DLC and a whole new map to StarWars Battlefront (i.e. a game that doesn't even support DLC), I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for feature that are in first generation XBL titles. How much time and resources would this take?! I salute them with the middle finger. The same response they gave with this lame customer servce response. I get angry when company don't support their products!!

This is like if I go buy a car and the back seats are missing the dealership tells me to deal with it because I can still put people and groceries in the back even though it may be a little troublesome.

Is there a split screen option to go on Live? I tried to do that with a buddy and couldn't find it. Normally I'd assume it simply didn't exist, but the interface and documentation are so skimpy that I can't be sure.

OMG that is pathetic. That's what the original MechAssault did. I dunno if they ever patched that or not. I think they did, but I'm not 100% sure.

Everything I read about this game screams RUSH JOB.

I think this highlights a fundamental problem with Reviews and Reviewers. They have to blast through games to meet their deadlines, so they really only get to experience the single player fully. The multiplayer components can only be dealt with very superficially as the ins-and-outs of multiplayer games don't usually manifest themselves until a few weeks after launch when everybody gets comfortable with the game.

Che had the intelligence to see the brilliance of PDZ, whereas Shou.. not so much :P

I completely forgot about the Mech Assault. That's right a lobby was added to the game with an update because the fans requested it! Like I saidm if first generation XBL game on the XBox could bet an update, why can't Activision take some time and bang this out. I get disgusted with the CoD2 team the more I think about it. Killcam is nice and all and it's a good game, but could we please have some game management controls please. Ther ear e those of us who can't stand playing games with 12 year old potty mouth freaks of society who demand thier chocolate milk. :lol

I for one like the fact that I can just jump into a game without having to anything else. I don't particularly care for "lobbys" or "interface." Lag does suck though. And the gameplay makes up for any other issues. Definitely the best game of the launch for me.

Most overrated 360 launch title.

Infinity Ward disappoints me with the 360 version of CoD2. I hope Shoe didn't review CoD2 for EGM after his shitstorm about taking the whole of PDZ into account in reviews. ;)

BUY PDZ!

I know that some people don't have friends, but it's no excuse for Activision. Even third-tier low-budget games like Carve have decent lobby/invite systems. This game is archaic from an online interface perspective.

Mrbob said:

PDZ is nothing but good times online (like last night ;) ). Best game of launch. COD2 could so easily be fixed if they would put in a lobby system, but even if they did, it could never match PDZ's variety and potential.

I heard it only takes 5-6 hours to complete. That good enough to keep you at bay?

:lol I have been trying to beat COD2 on Veteran. Then Kameo. Then PDZ. Then PGR3. Repeat. Plus, sports games. I have more than I need right now, but I keep getting drawn to Kong. Plus, I would rather play on Live late at night, and that is the only time I can play Condemend due to the fact I have a 4 year old who is very curious. Condemned = nightmares methinks.

Between the atrocious online setup and the random save bug that's hit me twice now - first time completely wiped out my save, second time didn't wipe my save but wouldn't let me continue past Silo no matter which method I tried to use - save and quit, resume mission, mission select - none of it worked, I feel the need to make a correction...

COD2 360 - Worst launch title

fixed.

This fucker's on ebay as I type this. I tried doing all the workarounds - I've only got 1 profile, 1 controller since launch, tried everything recommended on the hundreds of threads out there with people having this problem.

Fuck this game and fuck Activision for stealing my $63 and some change.

Check out my achievements for COD2, I beat every fucking mission on Veteran but because of that fucking glitch I didnt get the "War Hardened" 200 pts. Fuck you Activision!

Karma for laughing at me for buying PDZ! Now buy the superior FPS! That does suck though. No gamer points for you!

Yeah well at least you got something. My shit's so fucked up it won't let me go past the Silo level. Both times I played through it I tried it on Regular - both times, something has fucked up.

Should I be happy that I at least got 50 points for finishing the training level? Or should I be pissed that I get to be the laughingstock on Live for not being able to even finish the game on easy - because that's the conclusion you'll reach if you look at my achievements :(

So, does anyone want to join me in sending Activision/Infinity Ward a complaint email? Maybe there'll be strength in numbers, particularly if we stress the fact that we won't purchase any new maps, map packs, or marketplace downloads of any kind (I'll bet a couple of maps will be available for microtransaction in a month or so), or that we won't be purchasing COD3 at all - unless these problems (Live lag because of no hosting options, save glitch) are resolved. They're only going to listen if we speak as a group with our wallets.

And now I log on to find I've been negrepped for "Quitting Early," just because I refused to keep playing matches which were a series of still pictures. That's just the icing on the f*cking cake.

Take a guess. They went to the trouble of making a split screen mode but neglected to actually use it for anything but the dedicated split screen mode (no Live or system link). What a fucking waste.

Bumping this because of the following:

I don't know how true this is, but this was posted on the xbox.com forums today by a user with the gamertag Chezbippy12 -

Welcome to Microsoft XBox Support

The XBox Chat session has been accepted. This chat session is being recorded for quality monitoring; your IP address may be traced.

{Euclid}Welcome to the Xbox North America Customer Support! My name is Euclid. How may I be of assistance?

{jason }hi

{Euclid}hi jason

{jason}i have a big complaint about xbox live service on call of duty 2

{Euclid}ok.

{jason }i know it is not microsofts game, but I have contacted activsion and they keep trying to pass the buck onto microsoft and saying it is your problem

{Euclid}what seems to be the problem

{jason }i have read no lie 150+ pages on xbox360 forums, about people complaining about the xbox live abilitys on call of duty 2

{Euclid}I'm really sorry to hear that.

{jason }the game does not support the making of "private" games and that is a BIG problem for pretty much everybody that waited in lines for 20+ hours and paid big money for a $400 xbox360

{Euclid}as of the moment we are working on the glitches.

{Euclid}really sorry jason

{jason }we are not complaing about glitches

{jason g}i mean the game does disconnect alot and says "server full" but that could all change if we were able to make our own games for our friends only

{Euclid}well, actually, for your complains to be better addressed, it would be best if you call our phone support

{jason }as far as me and evey person that read all the hype about the 360. we were all under the impression that microsoft put a "standard" that ALL 360 games had to obyed by. We NEED a patch on live to make this possible

{jason}i mean we could make our own games on xbox one, so this doesnt qualify as next-gen

{Euclid}we are working on that

{jason }I have called the phone support twice, I have called activision twice, it seems that nobody at microsoft and activision cares about what the customers are complainng about

{jason}you are telling me that Microsoft is making a patch for call of duty2 to fix the way we play. and allow us to create our own games?

{Euclid}yes

{jason }so this problem has been issued to microsoft already? the private game issue on COD2?

{Euclid}yes it has

{Euclid}we really appreciate your patience

{Euclid}but the patch will be up soon

{jason goucher}do you have any idea when?

{jason goucher}even approx?

{Euclid}not really sorry

{jason goucher}do these things usually take like 1 month or 3 or 6?

{Euclid}about a month

{jason goucher}Will this be posted officially on xbox.com or anything?

{Euclid}yes it will be

{Euclid}on news

{jason }i am very impressed

{jason }so you guys must have been swamped with complaints huh

{Euclid}yes we are

{Euclid}no kidding

{jason }all on this private game problem?

{Euclid}not really, also on other issues

{jason }so when yesterday I called 1-800-4myxbox.. why was I told that it was not microsofts problem and that I should call activision back?

{jason }why didnt they just tell me that it is being worked on?

{Euclid}actually, its being worked on by activision, we are just being told if its working already

{jason }i wonder why activision wouldnt tell me that?

{Euclid}its an insider thing.

{Euclid};)

{jason }oh

{Euclid}the game works on their server

{Euclid}so its really their issue

{jason }Do you happen to know when Texas Hold'em is coming to xbox live arcade?

{Euclid}no sorry

{jason }ok thank you very much, So I am going to post this conversation on the forums, And I guess hopefully withthin the next month, I will see the update patch on call of duty2.

{Euclid}ok

{Euclid}hopefully

{Euclid}but no guarantee

{Euclid}It was a pleasure chatting with you today. Thank you for inquiring about Xbox. If you need further assistance, please come back and visit us again. I hope you have a nice day!

{jason}no guarantee ever or within the next month

{Euclid}the time frame

{jason }oh ok, awsome, thanks again

{Euclid}take it easy

So, if true, looks like we might be getting a patch after all.

The real sad thing is it looks like COD2 is the runaway hit of the 360. If they had just made multiplayer a priority higher than "get it working enough so that we can put 'multiplayer' on the box" it really could've been the 360's answer to Halo. But I guess what does Activision care when they made money hand over fist regardless.
