Coffee |OT| Taste as good as it smells

Tastes more like tea than coffee to me, and they are also expensive.

With milk it tastes more like a slightly sweetened latte, only with much more caffeine. They are a little pricy though.

are you from NY?

I've been drinking Grumpy coffee in a french press all week myself - about to change over to some Ecco or Counter Culture when I run out
I lived in Brooklyn last summer and I'm moving back in a month. I'm in Michigan currently and haven't been able to find anything that matches Cafe Grumpy in quality.

May I ask why inverted?

I find you get better extraction. Makes something similar to french press, but with easier cleanup and no grit at the bottom. If you do it according to the instructions, you can't really do the 2 min steep that I prefer without losing a significant amount of liquid.

Better description here.

I actually couldn't find anywhere that explicitly says why one would want to invert, but I think it makes good coffee so whatever.

Love me some java.

It really sucks that the water in my college town makes it overtly bitter and hard tasting. One of the first things I do when I get home is make a fresh pot.

I concur with those who have said 'Turkish coffee ftw'. :)

Someone bought me a Keurig for Christmas last year. I drink way too much coffee now, that shit is far too convenient.

Donut Shop is the best k-cup I've tried.

I used to be able to buy a box of 50 for 19 bucks on Amazon but apparently these things have gotten way too popular because now they are sitting at about 27 bucks.

I like Donut Shop too, but I drink a lot of Tully's cups. I can't remember what it's called, Dark Silk or something like that.

I'm a pretty regular aeropress user, but I've never checked out the inverted method. That post has inspired me to try that out soon.

It'll probably inspire even weirder looks than I get now from my coworkers, though.

Longer steeping without the leak through sells it.

I normally drink coffee in the mornings when I'm trying to wake up, so it's just Folgers and a drip machine. Going home to France is pretty awesome when I go out to get a coffee.

Thread title is a lie, nothing can be as high on the scale of 'good tastes' as coffee is on the scale of 'good smells'.

It's unreal, I don't even drink coffee but the smell of freshly ground beans is heavenly.

I ended up buying this sucker. It's pretty great, I guess. The grind is certainly more consistent than with the bullet style grinder. To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure if that translates to a noticeably better cup of coffee.

Thanks for the tip about the plastic bin, because that would have definitely gotten on my nerves. This one has no such issues. It's actually very easy to clean.

I usually go back and forth between tea and coffee. This week I'm on tea. But when I'm on coffee, I've found that this works well:

Step 1:

The fresh smell of beans + a little upper body exercise.

Step 2:

Step 3: DRINK

It makes the perfect amount of coffee for me. Lately, I've been using some blue bottle ethiopian beans I got a month ago when I was in SF.

When it's hot, I like brewing up viet coffee over ice like this guy:

I'm in France right now, left the Aeropress at home as i'm hoping to be out drinking their finest liquids.

I've never tried a French Press. I just use a drip machine and drink it black.
You can find a decent french press by Bodom on Amazon for around $20 and coffee out of it tastes a lot better than most machines. No bitter after taste & it's much smoother. Making it involves a little more time/effort (similar to making tea), but it's well worth it.

WHAT? Don't make tea in your french press. That'll crush the leaves. =(
My french press doesn't push all the way to bottom (so they aren't crushed). It's convenient when you only want to bring one device to work, but usually, I just use my teapot infuser for tea.

Could anyone suggest some of their favorite roasters in the northeast US region. Looking to see whats good around me.

Why do people use such a shitty photo effect when they are trying to show how good something is?

regarding those Keurig machines, how much coffee are those keurig cups supposed to generate? they have one at my dentist office and it seems REALLY strong to use 1 K-cup for just 1 cup of coffee...and i like strong coffee..

So coffee-Gaf, what is the best travel mug?

I just got a new thermos (Zojirushi, it is amazing), but I now need a new travel mug (I use what's in my thermos in the afternoon and mug in the morning).

Anyone have any relatively inexpensive, awesome quality travel mugs that keep stuff hot?

This is my other love, vice, addiction, whatever aside from gaming.
Allow me to validate this post a little better:

Used to always drink it from DD with cream and sugar. Man they put so much sugar in there around where I live. And some people ask them for extra sugar. Lately, switched to cream only, enjoy it so much more now that I can actually taste what I'm drinking.

@Deadly Cyclone - I have a plastic travel 'cup' from Dunkin Donuts, my wife got it as a promo when she tried stopping for tea at a newer location that hadn't quite opened for business yet. Its flipping awesome. It looks just like their styrofoam cups, but is plastic, and I swear there must be a vacuum layer embedded in the cup body, because my drinks stay hot for long periods. I swear, I've seen these things branded with Starbucks logos too.

George Howell, PT's coffee (VA, not sure if that counts as NE), Grumpy, 49th parallel coffee roasters (Canada), I know Blue Bottle, even though they're from San Fran, has a roasting spot in NYC.

That's as many as I know, out of those I've had consistently good COFFEE from PT's Coffee, and Grumpy is always delicious (though they're NYC only I think, not wholesale)

George Howell and 49th parallel I've only had their espresso, which was AMAZING on both accounts (I've had several different types of George Howell espresso, all great) - so depends on what you're looking for. I've never had PT's espresso.

If you're planning on getting some coffee beans for home brew, the only one I can really comment on is PT's - always a great cup.

Sorry for the bump, but I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for a cheap coffee grinder?

Why is there no Cooking-GAF thread :|

I have a drip machine and only use folders coffee brand ): and yet it's not half bad. With some sugar in it and it's a tasty treat. I have it every morning, and will not function without it. I've been drinking coffee since I was a wee boy ):

Wow how did I miss this thread?

I just bought this machine on a pretty big sale the other day:

Any recommendations for t-disc brands and flavours?

I've been inverting my Aeropress and it's bulletproof. Can push the air out before pushing the coffee through, too. Good times!

I've been making ice coffee with mine lately. Love the Aeropress!

I've switched to black coffee now...but I'm pretty bored by the usual Maxwell House or your generic Columbian coffee. Any recommendations?

Should I get an espresso machine, or do you really need sugar with that?

I love coffee, with sugar and milk/cream, but it honestly has no effect on my whatsoever. I can drink a double shot of espresso 10 minutes before bed and sleep sound as a baby.

If i don't have coffee during the day, It takes me longer to get going. I have mine with whole milk (fuck half and half and fuck your sissy skim/soy milk garbage) and no sugar. If I do have sugar, I use splenda.

Try raw milk! I like my coffee black, unless it's an espresso drink.

I'm not even sure where to get raw milk in boston, even so I don't know if I'd have to do anything special for it.

haha, i went to Frankie's 457 last week for the first time. pretty awesome food!

i'm guessing you work there?

To those of you with semi-professional/pro espresso machines: remember to take out the group head screen
R_39a_medium.png

now and then and clean behind it! Seriously. I just did, and it's amazing the amount of ground coffee that gets past the screen and lodges up in the group head. It's also amazing how much better the espresso gets when everything is clean again :) Should do it regularly, but it's such a messy job that I tend to "forget" it for long periods of time.

I tried out one of the Keurig K-Cup machines as Office Depot.

Holy shit the "Donut Shop" coffee is fucking delicious.

I'm thinking of picking up one of the inexpensive one-cup Keurig machines sometime this week.
