First tragedy, then farce.
This list is just proof how hard it is to keep up with indie music. Two years ago I was really really into it and bought tons of new albums. I have heard of maybe 10 of those bands.

I'm not saying the music isn't good, I'm sure it is, but it is much easier just to listen to popular shit.

...the only artist/band I know on that list is Lil Wayne, and I don't even like his music.

Who the hell are these people?!

If we are posting lists I might as well post Headphone's Commute's list. He mostly focuses on electronic artists... so a lot of the artists are even more obscure... majority of them I haven't heard yet. But the guy has amazing tastes... so eventually I am going to try and get around to listening to most of the stuff listed.

The vast majority of Headphone Commute's list is from the electronic, ambient and new classical genres. In other words, it's the anti-GAF.

All of these lists need more 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons. A Silver Mt. Zion delivered one of the most powerful vocal performances of the entire year.

You guys must have been comatose for the past 5 years not to have even heard of some of those musicians.

Erykah Badu's been around for a while and Lil Wayne is unavoidable. You don't have to be an indie fuck to have heard of some of these people - you just have to be someone who's actually been awake for part of the past year.

I'm suprised @ number the number 2 spot

Black milk has come a long way, from being dilla's understudy, to being really recognized.

I've seen the cool kids and numerous lists, but I don't see wale or 88-keys anywhere

That Evangelista album is really something else

and I've seen that The Fall album pop up in other lists. Smith is unstoppable! To be honest I had no idea their music was still good :lol I haven't heard anything they made past 85 or so.

just checked the tour dates and she's coming to the netherlands in may, but she's playing on the damn opposite end of the country from where i live. sucks but not a complete deal breaker.

the album is really unique but still it reminds me of late 70s no wave, lydia lunch in particular. which is a very good thing

Yep, that Evangelista album is really great.

The more I look at the list in the OP, the more it sucks.

Well, I'd kinda skipped over the Badu record. I'll probably grab it now just to see why they put it in the top spot.

Dan

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
I haven't seen any Ladytron love on these end of the year lists and that's disappointing. I thought Velocifero was really fantastic.

I don't get the Fleet Foxes love with all these music list.

I am so, so, so, so sick of them. They're not awful, at all, but they are in no way brilliant. It's just ugh ugh ugh ugh. I went out to lunch at a diner (aptly named Diner) today and they played the album twice in a row. I've had, "I've been swallowing the eyes, been swallowing the eyes, been swallowing the eyes..." in my head all day. ALL DAY.

To those saying these lists are awful: let's see your top 50. I only say that because these lists really do highlight a lot of the decent "popular" indie music that has come out this year. It's kind of a shame that everyone is really only working with what was most hyped up and not really stepping outside of the box and trying to be a little more adventurous, but it's to be expected in this day and age when being "hip" has never been easier.

Also, 'Dear Painter, Paint Me' is the best album of 2008.
