Cold showers and why you should do it.

Also are you lot doing ice-cold showers? I initially started on ice-cold but its just too fucking hard. Now I put at warm for a a minute to open the pores and clean the dirt then I put it on cold. But just normal cold, not ICE cold.

wanted to give this a try this morning but couldn't bear it and instead settled for a cosy warm shower.

maybe tomorrow.

What are these supposed health benefits people keep talking about that are in favor of cold showers? Namely this skin stuff.

Wow so I have a mild allergy to nuts. If I accidentally eat one I won't die but I'll get a very irritated throat, do you think hot tea would help?

In theory, perhaps, but the problem is that the heat from a normal "hot" cup of tea would likely not be enough, and you don't want to start drinking anything too hot for the other damage it can cause to such delicate tissue. It's always worth a try, I guess, at your normal hot tolerance, but the action on the surface of the skin, I've found, takes a pretty constant stream of hot air, which initially makes the itching more pronounced, then causes it to just go away and start to become painful from the heat...

I was going to post a new thread but found this (relatively) new thread already here - a couple days ago I had to take a cold shower because of the washer being on, heh, and I didn't find it to be unenjoyable.

Today I decided to take one just because, and it's actually nice to take - it feels great. I guess supposed health benefits are a plus, but I never thought cold showers would be anything but terrible.

Last winter my heat got shut off for two weeks and I could only take cold showers.

My skin would be super itchy after I got out. =( Never wanna go through that again.

Since I still don't the balls (pun not intended) to take a cold shower from the outset, I take a warm/hot shower then blast on the cold water for about 1-3 minutes to finish. It feels pretty damn good if a bit shocking/unpleasant. Fortunately that's why I rub my body to counter the loss of heat. In fact, I tend to jump all over the bath tub because it's cold.

I tried blasting the cold shower on once initially but gave in to the temptation and mixed in the hot water; it didn't help that the bathroom was cold and I had the window open. During the winter too.

When I was staying with a friend in London, his water heater was busted so we had only cold water the whole week we were staying there.

You people are crazy.

Yes, yes! One of us. I love cold showers. My water heater was busted for three years and I basically had no issue with it. My Ex made me buy a new one because she refused to sleep over if I had no hot water.

I still shower with cold water though, it makes me feel so alive. Awesome.

big bump but I've started taking cold showers and you feel so refreshed afterwards, its great. I used to take BURNING hot showers but when you get out you feel kind of exhausted

I also love when you have it super cold you have to force yourself to get over that feeling of wanting to make the water hot and embrace the freezing cold water..

Improves circulation. Good blood circulation is vital for overall cardiovascular health. Healthy blood circulation also speeds up recovery time from strenuous exercises and work. Alternating between hot and cold water while you shower is an easy way to improve your circulation. Cold water causes your blood to move to your organs to keep them warm. Warm water reverses the effect by causing the blood to move towards the surface of the skin. Cold shower proponents argue that stimulating the circulatory system in this way keeps them healthier and younger looking than their hot water-loving counterparts.

Relieves depression. Lots of great men from history suffered bouts of depression. Henry David Thoreau is one such man. But perhaps Thoreau’s baths in chilly Walden Pond helped keep his black dog at bay. Research at the Department of Radiation Oncology at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine indicates that short cold showers may stimulate the brain’s “blue spot”- the brain’s primary source of noradrenaline — a chemical that could help mitigate depression. I guess a bout of the blues isn’t so bad after all.

Keeps skin and hair healthy. Hot water dries out skin and hair. If you want to avoid an irritating itch and ashy elbows, turn down the temperature of your showers. Also, cold water can make your manly mane look shinier and your skin look healthier by closing up your cuticles and pores.

Strengthens immunity. According to a study done in 1993 by the Thrombosis Research Institute in England, individuals who took daily cold showers saw an increase in the number of virus fighting white blood cells compared to individuals who took hot showers. Researchers believe that the increased metabolic rate, which results from the body’s attempt to warm itself up, activates the immune system and releases more white blood cells in response.

Increases testosterone. During the 19th century, many doctors and ministers recommended that young men take baths in cold water to reduce the sin of “self-pollution,” i.e. whacking off. Cold water was thought to extinguish a man’s flaming carnal desires. There was even a ghastly device invented on this principle.

How wrong they were! The same study by the Thrombosis Research Institute cited above showed that cold water showers actually increase testosterone production in men. Increased testosterone levels not only boost a man’s libido, but also his overall strength and energy level. If you’re looking to increase your testosterone, instead of juicing up like Mark McGwire, hop into a cold shower.

Increases fertility. Trying to become a dad? Cold showers are good for your little swimmers. Your testes aren’t meant to get too hot; that’s why they hang outside your body. Sperm counts decrease when the temperature of a man’s testes increases. Experiments done in the 1950s showed that hot baths were an effective contraceptive. Men who took a 30 minute hot bath every other day for 3 weeks were infertile for the next six months. More recently, the University of California at San Francisco did a study with men who were exposed to 30 minutes of “wet heat” (hot baths and such) a week. When the men cut this exposure out, their sperm count went up by 491%, and their sperm’s motility improved as well. While switching from a hot to cold shower may not have as dramatic an effect, if you’re trying to create some progeny, it surely won’t hurt.

Increases energy and well-being. Every time I end a shower with cold water, I leave feeling invigorated and energized. Your heart starts pumping, and the rush of blood through your body helps shake off the lethargy of the previous night’s sleep. For me, the spike in energy lasts several hours. It’s almost like drinking a can of Diet Mountain Dew, minus the aspartame. And while it hasn’t been studied, many people swear that cold showers are a surefire stress reducer. I’m a believer.
Getting Started with Cold Water Showers

Seriously, try it

I'm an absolute wuss when I get out of a hot shower, let alone a cold one. The moment the water goes off and I'm left standing there wet and vulnerable as the air hits me, I'm shivering.

So cold shower? No thanks.

When I was staying with a friend in London, his water heater was busted so we had only cold water the whole week we were staying there.

You people are crazy.

Much like a lot of diets and supplements, people like to think they've cheated death for a bit more. Sadly, it's not more practical at that than prayer.

I'm a wuss. I cannot stand cold showers. Once that water hits me...brah.

The most I can do is rinse with cold water for a minute or so.

All this year I've been showering with cold water... and I love it.

I feel like a new person every morning, I don't get tired during the day, my mood is better, my skin feels better, my hair, everything is better with cold showers.

So GAF, what do you thing about a nice cold shower in the morning?
how did you get into it? cold showers are such a shock to me

Due to the water heater being broken I've been forced to get cold showers. I live in a warm place so it shouldn't bother me, but I got a horrible sprain in my back that screams for a long hot shower and unfortunately I haven't been able to give it, and the cold shower has only made it worst.

The best part of cold showers (or just even cold rinsing) is that you never get that freezing feeling of getting out of the water to dry off. I actually get warmer after turning off the cold water and look forward to the "warm" air.

No, there is no way I would subject myself to cold showers. I don't care of the benefits, cold showers are not fun.

They really do work, but I can't stand them, I just can't get past it, every now and then I start back up again... I guess I'll give it another shot.

After living somewhere where I had no choice but to take cold showers for over a year (no hot water), I've had enough of that nonsense to last me a lifetime.

Can't understand how people do that to themselves willingly.
