Cold temperature and dvds/cds

Having lived in So. CA my whole life I have no clue what real cold is.

Now I'm living in the top north of Japan and it's getting really cold fast. Hovering around 7-8c right now and there's snow on the local mountain already. From what I hear as it gets into Dec the temperature is gonna be like way below 0c here.

So I'm a little worried about my game/dvd collection. If my house is like 0c/32f or something while I'm out during the day (since I don't think I'd leave the heaters on 24/7 for months) are my dvds going to warp and die? Should I make some kind of heatbox box with a blanket and stuff and throw all my dvds/cds in there during the winter?

Chemistry was never a strong subject for me, so I need some advice.

Thanks,

Is this a joke post?

Unless it gets like 100 degrees below zero in your house, which isnt bloody likely, your cds will be fine.

You should really leave the heaters on.... bad things can happen if you don't, and I'm not talking about dvds.

What? Scratches head.

People with electric thermostat set them to turn off after they leave for the day and like 20 minutes before they get home. Nothing bad happens

I think it's better to keep the thermostat set all day at a moderate temperature (say in the sixties farenheit) than to let your house, walls, floors, and furnishings all become ice cold, and then have your heater labor for hours to warm everything up again.

What kind of heat do you have in this house anyway?

Weather wise... only heat and moisture can damage discs. As long as you keep your collection away from heat sources and there isn't any moisture that collects on your collection (during cold and heat fluctuations) it should be fine.

Forget your game collection. What about your pipes bursting?

Drip your faucets when the heat isn't on so that the flow of water thru your pipes is continuous. The freezing of pipes is a major headache.

Yeah, the most efficient way is to leave your heater on at average room temperature of about 25C (I would leave it lower like 15-20C). Your heater don't have to labour so much to get your place all heat up again, which usually takes a lot of energy.
