They are just words. Why is Colin so bothered/offended?

For what it's worth, buried deep down in this lengthy argumentative thread...

I'd been a longtime subscriber to PS I Love You XOXO, but hadn't listened to any episodes in a while. Listening to Colin spout off on one of the most recent podcasts directly caused me to go click unsubscribe (I did listen to the entire episode trying to hear it out). I didn't make a big deal about, or give bad ratings to the podcast, I just didn't want to listen to his nonsense any further. I think the podcast and company are much better off without him.

While I disagree with his opinions and viewpoints, it was the complete lack of meaningful discussion or engaging arguments that drove me away. Backing up your own viewpoint with statements like (paraphrasing), 'literally nobody else in the entire world agrees with that stupid opinion, literally nobody anywhere, unless they are also stupid', is not the kind of mouth drivel I want to accept as worthwhile conversation.

How is journalism dying? If you wanted to say traditional journalistic outlets are dying, sure, maybe. But I'd argue even that has plateaued. But the entire profession of journalism? It's such a dumb thing to say, especially from someone who was a journalist and who's future probably lies in journalism (or punditry, which isn't that far removed)

Like cherry picking the one headline about this that was wrong and then proclaiming journalism is dying because they used an incorrect adjective. If that doesn't give you a perfect picture of Colin's mindset idk what does

Dumb headline for sure. Replace racist with sexist, and it's not wrong, though.

At this point I'm just tired of talking about that dumb joke. It wasn't even funny, clever, or worth defending. I get that he wants to defend people's rights to make jokes without being character assassinated... But pick your battles? Idk. This stupid situation has already destroyed a decade-long partnership, significantly hurt a startup company made up of a group of friends, and ruined people who enjoyed the shows' morning commutes. Is this really even worth it?

When it hits you that you have no source of income lined up right before bed and you can't fall asleep, so you try to garner up some sympathy online so you feel like you matter.
When your name has justifiably been linked with sexism all day and you're gifted with a stupid headline to distract from that

His Tweet about Destructoid reminds me of something Trump would tweet. "No one reads Destructoid." "The failing New York Times." It's all the same lol.

"Journalism is dying" says noted glorified video game company hype man.

It really is a shame it ended this way. This was completely unforeseeable a year ago. But somewhere along the line, Narcissist Colin became a thing and he put his "brand" in front of the Kinda Funny brand. I truly think he will regret this down the line. They had a good thing going and it's over now because he's too prideful to apologize for a dumb tweet.

Interesting that he's referring to it as a "dad joke." Perhaps he *does* read GAF a bit? That was the defense trotted out here a bunch - "It's a dumb dad joke!"

I'm gonna hop out of this thread now. There's been some good discussion but it's been almost a week of this I just want to move on from it. Given his recent tweets I don't see things getting any better either. It's been fun.

I'll probably be back tomorrow somehow

Yeah this is totally fair. The issue with KF was that Colin would voice his opinions very strongly and openly but none of Tim, Greg, or Nick would ever legitimately challenge him on anything, even though you knew they disagreed with him. It was difficult to listen to.

I feel like Colin could do well if paired with someone that could take him to task on certain things while still maintaining a good chemistry.

He regularly posted in the podcast thread when his dumb minority related video came out. That thread has a ton of little nuggets of stupidity tucked away by him.

My favorite to this moment is his belief that he did more for minorities with his videos than the people complaining about him and his videos (me in that instance).

His arguments were hilarious inept.

"I do more for minorities than you have ever done!"

"I'm a pro bono lawyer and I help a shit ton of minorities"

"..."

I was looking for new accounts in gaming to follow many years ago. Before Kinda Funny existed. I saw Colin retweeted by games people a couple of times so I followed him. Over time I saw all the bullshit people weren't retweeting. I'm not sure why people seem surprised by any of this. I guess when you're a fan of the thing he's on it's maybe a little easier to overlook it. I will say that the people I follow don't seem to retweet him anymore, likely because they started feeling the way so many here do.

The Dad joke comparison is absolutely apt. If you are offended by Colin's tweet you damn well should be upset at the "dumb bumbling dad" stereotype featured in every modern sitcom, both live action and animated. It is just as used as the "Loud nagging woman" and just as much of a sexist stereotype. If that sort of thing is something you find highly offensive.

That said Colin Was clearly targeting / being controversial with that Tweet which of course makes it worse. But in regards to the "joke" in and of itself it's a commonly used stereotype in media and one with a direct male stereotype comparison

Read up on "punching down," get back to us. Then, if you feel the same, attempt empathy at those who live lives where jokes like this are their reality, and play into a world where they are less-valued.

The joke of the dumb bumbling dad is that the dad is dumb and completely out of touch. Archie Bunker stuff, not very flattering.

That's the point? Just as the "Loud wife" isn't flattering. They are long running "role stereotypes". The question is if you find that offensive or not. It is 100% being intellectually dishonest with yourself to find one offensive and not the other. They go hand in hand.

That said, I do agree Colin wasn't "just being funny" and was targeting / trying to pissed people off. Which totally changes the meaning behind the Tweet

To be clear, this is massively hypocritical.

Completely agreed.

This shouldn't get buried underneath everything else.

it's pretty clear to see that labeling it a "dad" joke downplays what he actually wanted to achieve - controversy. it lays the blame squarely on people who didn't like it and not on him for needlessly stirring the pot to begin with.

Do people not really understand how dad jokes work

They're not just bad jokes

Dad jokes have their reputation because your dad could actually be a really funny guy, but in his efforts to make you laugh, he has to use very basic humor. He can't make sexual innuendo with you, so those jokes are out. Jokes that require cursing are out. When you're young, you don't get references, so those are out. Anything that requires much thinking is out.

So calling a misogynistic joke a "dad joke" is only true if he thinks of everyone as dumber than him. Which, like, probably true, as well.

100% agreed and with you on that, as already stated

Yup. A "dad joke" is typically a terrible pun, or something along those lines. That's why it caught my eye: I would never have called this a "dad joke," but GAF kept calling it as such.
