College Football Week 1: Power 5 Conferences to UCF – “Stick to cooking”

Golden Domers are chickenshit!!
Welcome to Week One of College Football’s 2014 Season! As most of you know, this is the year with the first ever college football playoff (fuck off, FCS).

Now, instead of competing for this:

SZLqEI1.jpg

everyone is competing for this:

A9EQiYk.jpg
.

Instead of having geeks in basements choosing who plays for the national championship, now we’ll have suits in board rooms deciding whether or Notre Dame’s 3 or 4 losses are enough to keep them out of the playoffs. I think we all know the answer to that one.

Now, before we at the season ahead of us, let’s take a quick look back at the important events that occurred this offseason.

Important Events this Offseason:
January 6, 2014: FSU defeats Auburn.
January 12, 2014: UCF not invited to join a real conference.
February 5, 2014: Signing day. UCF signs a Top 60 class!
February 29, 2014: UCF still in the American Conference.
March 18, 2014: The ACC still not interested in UCF.
April 1, 2014: UCF invited to join the SEC!
May 7, 2014: No conference realignment news for UCF.
July 1, 2014: Maryland and Rutgers join the B1G; Louisville joins the ACC.
August 7, 2014: NCAA Board votes to fuck over UCF.
August 15, 2014: Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins denies rumors that UCF has been invited to a “Power 5” Conference.
Looking forward to the 2014 season, we’ll be introducing a new feature to the CFB-GAF threads. Each week we’ll watch UCF as it attempts to earn a seat in the playoffs.

First up for Knightro and the Golden Citroknights: Penn State. Can UCF overcome the loss of the best QB it has ever seen? Only time will tell.

Now, last, but not least, the reason why you guys all give a shit about these threads: TTK’s Pick ‘em.

2014 CFB GAF Pick'em!

The pick'em returns, and this year the rules are the same as last year, but I'll post 'em again anyway.

Congrats again to StrikerObi for last year's victory!

Here are the rules:
  • 12 games will be selected by me each week
  • Players pick a winner for each game and how much they think they will win by (margin of victory)
  • You can get up to 2 points per game: 1 point for picking the winning team, and another point if your margin of victory prediction is within 3 of the actual margin of victory
  • You can get 1 additional bonus point in a week if you pick every game correctly (not including MoV)
  • Maximum of 25 points each week
  • Each player's lowest week will be automatically dropped
  • Anybody can play, just post your picks!
  • Some games come earlier than Saturday. Make sure to get your picks in on time.
  • Are you a ban-risk? PM me your email address and I'll keep up with you if you get banned so that you can still get your picks in on time.
  • You have until the time the games start each week to get your picks in. Don't try and cheat by putting your picks after the games have started. Be cool.

Also, don't forget to give Buck your picks for conference champions:
Here we go, scoring will work as the following. Each division winner correct is 1 points, conf champ winner selection is 2 points.

Here's the part I'm unsure of, feedback wanted:

First 4 playoff games picked correctly 3 points, final two picked 5 points, champion 7 points. Seedings will not matter for points (unless we feel it should)

Sounds good? Fill em out! Can PM or post them up here, will post them up on google docs again:

I'm glad I don't have to see the title of the offseason thread pop up any more. Nothing like having a 7 month long thread with a title about a conference that hasn't been relevant in more than a decade.

At least he disclaimed his selections with the picture of the dog.

Its a big harsh for a permaban though, because the plus or minus 2 points range is easily forgotten by new players.
Harsh lessons for an even harsher world.

As ever, looking forward to striving for that elusive goal that is a .500 season. Per usual, "we gon' woop dey ass" syndrome has taken over Knoxville, it's always amazing. I love fall.

BruinsGaf checking back in. Hundley auditioning for the Rams next year

E:Mre, is that all season with the spread? PAC 12 games are close :(

Hey, man, if I know West Virginia beats Bama by a single point I'm riding that wave with my arms outstretched & my pants around my ankles.

Tempted to pick every pick by 2 just to test the Corndog Master.

Legendary Bulldog, Dan Magill, passed away yesterday. Not sure how well known outside of UGA fans, but the man has been instrumental with the program and with Bulldog Clubs since the 50's. Seems appropriate to also link to an article by his buddy, Loran Smith. I'm sure Dan Magill and Larry Munson are swapping stories together today.

This is an incredible picture of Bill Hartman and Dan Magill.

I'll put my picks here later this week.

Technically, the crystal football will still be awarded as it goes to the winner of the coaches poll. It's jut going to mean a whole lot less.

Honestly I'm not sure how to deal with a Duke football season with expectations. Its a lot easier to deal with loses when you don't expect a lot of wins, and the wins you do get you really enjoy. I'm a miserable basketball fan and I can't remember the last season I actually enjoyed, either its relief when they win or anger and disappointment when they lose, which is a stupid attitude to have when it comes to a game.

In short, I don't want football become that either, but I really don't want the team to suck again. The non conference schedule is pillow soft, but then a loss to Troy, KU or Tulane will be pretty bad. Duke has one of the most experienced teams in the ACC, but they've lost their best defensive player and starting TE for the year. Provided Duke plays to their talent and experience and goes 4-0 I think they better than Wake, UVA and possibly Pitt with what they lost. I see toss up games with Cuse, GT, UNC, and I think VT and the U have the edge in terms of talent (but still beatable).

I think a 9-3 or 8-4 season is realistic barring anymore injuries and the team continues to play well. 6-6 or less would be a big disappointment. Thats pretty different from a team just a few years ago 3-5 wins would have been a success.

How annoying is it for the pick em runners to deal with a list of single teams for your picks versus bolding the winner on the original list?
