...because DC had to put Ron f*cking Garney on JLA.

SEP040001 PREVIEWS VOL XIV #11 PI

I was all set... really, I was. After a lackluster stint of guest writers/artists (capped by the plague that is Chuck Austen), DC was finally going to get JLA back on track by naming Kurt (Marvels, Astro City, Conan) Busiek as regular series writer. And I was very eager to jump back on board; so eager, in fact, that I rather stupidly chose to overlook the fact that they'd teamed him with Ron Garney, Austen's partner in crime(s against humanity) on both JLA and Uncanny X-Men.

Sure, Ron Garney sucks. However, at the time this was announced I thought, "How bad can it really be? I'll try to put up with him, for Busiek's story." But then I actually looked at the last few issues of JLA, and as it turns out, Ron Garney's work on JLA is pretty f*cking BAD. So bad, in fact, that upon seeing it I immediately had the series removed from my pull list. I'm sorry, Busiek, but when the art is this bad it becomes too much of a distraction.

Here, see for yourself:

It's just... so painful.

So, nothing for me this week except a free copy of Previews. How about you?

Whereas I've got a damned busy week:

Birds of Prey #75 - Consistently enjoyable DC hero fare.

Wonder Woman #209 - Somewhat less than consistent. I'm reading this through the end of the story arc, then dropping the hell out of it.

Planetary #21 - Another issue? Already? Are they mad?

2304_400x600.jpg

This looks to be the "Ellis does terrible things to Doctor Strange" issue. Woo!

WE3 #2 (of 3) - The first issue was positively amazing, and I fully expect this issue to be just as good. The highlight of the week.

2257_400x600.jpg

If you haven't read the first issue, go ahead and pick both up at the store this week. Screw waiting for the trade.

Blue Monday: Painted Moon #3 (of 4) - Everyone loves Blue Monday, and if they don't they should.

Five Star Stories Vol. 23 and 24 - And there's twenty bucks right there. FSS continues to catch up with the Japanese release; I'm thinking we've got four, maybe five more US volumes to go before the horrible waiting begins. Reckon I'll enjoy it while it lasts...

Maison Ikkoku Vol. 7 - And Viz's excellent MI reissues continue. Just in time, too; I finally got around to reading Vol. 6 yesterday.

That's a great week, with the exception of the merely okay Wonder Woman. Woo!

PLANETARY #21
SOLO #1
WE 3 #2 (Of 3)
BLUE MONDAY PAINTED MOON #3 (Of 4)

This is like the best week ever.

I'm really glad that Blue Monday is finally coming out. Issue 2 was the funniest comic I've read in a long time. I think this latest series is the best Blue Monday stuff yet... the art is looking nicer than usual too - it's a real step up (even better than those holiday issues, and those looked pretty good).

Planetary is moving towards the endgame. It's frustrating to have the book coming out this infrequently, considering that the story is starting to pay off big time... you have to reread those back issues just to remember what's going on. It's kind of crazy that Cassady is putting out three of the best comics around simultaneously - Astonishing, Planetary, and I Am Legion (that book was really good.... glad I tracked it down). That's impressive!

We3 is just too good to even talk about. I can't talk about it. It's too good.

I like the idea of Solo, but then again I liked the idea behind DC Comics Presents and most of those were awful. I kind of like Tim Sale, although he's really been dragged down by Loeb's stale scripts lately. OK, I'll buy it anyway because I like short form storytelling a little bit.

I can complain, because the art is THAT offensive. I've already made my decision, and switched from JLA to JLE on my pull list.

Now, if Busiek's "Crime Syndicate of America" story turns out to be the greatest JLA story ever told, then I may look at a TPB purchase. And if the folks at DC finally wise up, boot that hack Garney to the minor leagues, and put a worthy artist on JLA, well I'd come back in that case too.

Admittedly, that ain't exactly the best art I've ever seen, but offensive? Look, this is offensive:

It needs to be said that I was gonna hit the shop just for We3 #2, but DD and GLR sweeten the deal a bit.

It is offensive because I expect better, from and for, a book like JLA. DC should know better.

Man! No Uncle Scrooge and Comics and Stories! Seems like that's the first time ever that the 64 page issues didn't come out the week following the 32 page issues.

I may pick up a few things to try out this week.

Oh, how Spike and I differ. This is probably one of the BEST Comic Book Days in recent memory. I'll be grabbing:

ADAM STRANGE #2 (Of 8)
AUTHORITY REVOLUTION #1 (Of 12)
FLASH #215
GREEN LANTERN REBIRTH #1 (OF 6)
JLA #107 - Garney sucks, but Busiek's name alone warrants the purchase. Busiek + crap is still better than Joe Kelly + ANYBODY.
SOLO #1 - Maybe. Love Tim Sale, but I'm only buying it for the Loeb/Sale Superman story.
WE 3 #2 (Of 3)
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #513
DAREDEVIL #66
WOLVERINE #21

Wow. What a week. I need to catch my breath.

In all seriousness, are you actually enjoying JLE? Doug Mahnke's art is nice and all, but Joe Kelly couldn't write himself out of a paperbox.

I agree with nomoment on this one. I do buy comics when I can as I just pick them up roughly once a month thanks to my pull list, but this week is worth the trip on Wednesday. There's just so much great stuff there that I can't pass it up. Plus, I'm going to offload plenty of comics to my dealer and probably work on some nice amounts of store credit as I have been buying TONS of books over the past couple of months and the pull list just continues to grow. Anyways, here's what I'll be picking up:

ADAM STRANGE #2 (Of 8)
AUTHORITY REVOLUTION #1 (Of 12)
BIRDS OF PREY #75
FABLES VOL 4 MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS TP (MR)
SUPERMAN #210
WE 3 #2 (Of 3) (MR)
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #513
POWERLESS #5 (Of 6)
WOLVERINE #21

Fables has been awesome in trade and it's about time we got volume 4 and I also have to pick up Supreme Power vol 2. Y-The Last Man vol 4 and USM vol 11 are on the horizon as well so I can't wait to pick those up.

Adam Strange is FUCKING AWESOME. I'm very happy I picked that one up as a sale item this past Saturday at my LCS. Such a beautiful work. WE3 is also pretty friggin awesome as well. I love Morrison's quirky shit. Sea Guy was great, this could be better. I'm dropping ASM after this issue as I just wanted to stick around for the finale of the arc. It's been good, but I'd rather just stick with one spidey exclusive title a month and that's MKSM until this venom thing is over and then I'll probably drop that too. The Pulse is all I need for my Daily Bugle fix.

Birds of Prey I might put back on the rack. Ever since the art started going all flunky with the last arc I've been really dissapointed with this title. Powerless has been bittersweet at best. It's ok and an interesting story, but it doesn't feel inspired at all. It actually feels pretty derivative. I'm sticking with Wolvering for this arc only and then it's off my list as well. I'll give Millar the benefit of the doubt for a couple of months as I'll be dropping his MKSM pretty soon. Just as I start dropping titles, I pick up all new ones with Iron Man and Captain America next month for their respective relaunches. Both look super.

I hate Superman. I really do. But I do so love Jim Lee. I LOATHE Azzarello. Authority Revolution got a 7/10 and an 8/10 from thefourthrail so I hope that's good. It'll fill my superhero team fix until a good replacement comes along. I don't like JLA or JSA in individual issues, Avengers will be dropped after 503, Identity Crisis is nearly over... Maybe I'll just read some backlogged JLA or JSA trades. I liked the JSA: Stealing Thunder vol 5 trade and the JLA: Trial by Fire vol 14. Can anyone reccomend any other great JLA or JSA trades? Also, I've been digging Captain Marvel as of late -- can someone explain his origin to me or explain a great comic of his that does or even some JSA issue? I'm really at a loss when it comes to his character...

Flash. Hawkman. What are your opinions on those two titles? I've thought about checking them out, since it's a nothing week for me.

I'd recommend:

JLA: Earth 2 by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, or JLA: Tower of Babel by Mark Waid and Howard Porter. Both are incredible reads, and represent two of the best JLA stories from the past decade, IMO.

I really like both titles, especially The Flash, which I still think is the best pure superhero title on the stands. The last two/three issues have been great, and the current Flash storyline weaves perfectly into Identity Crisis. Highly recommended.

Hawkman is good too, again, as a pure superhero title. I also think the currently writers, Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti, are handling the ongoing Hawkman/Hawkgirl romantic subplot very well. I'd also recommend Hawkman, but not nearly as highly as Flash.

i forgot about SOLO#1. that needs to be picked up. and i think i'll get back to buying hawkman, i dropped it after geff johns left but if palmiotti is on board......

I can't remember what's goin on in JLA... let me look it up. Oh a tie in to that Avengers/JLA mini-series a bit back that I couldn't get in to because the I thought the art was horrendous... too many people seemed to share the same strange-looking nose.... is there any rundown on if this story has an far reaching ramifications to the JLA?

I like both Kelly and Busiek cuz they have both written books I've enjoyed. Kelly may leave a plothole in his story but it can still be entertaining, whereas Busiek's story can be just fine except that it's boring.

I liked the first 5 JLA trades in the current series and I also liked JLA:Superpower, a simple story but sad.

Packed week for me. Doesn't look like I'll be buying any DVDs this week. Lots of books I'm looking forward to, most importantly Flash, Green Lantern Rebirth, and Amazing Spider-Man.

Funny thing about spider-man, I met a girl in one of my art classes named Gwen, and the whole time I'm talking to her I'm thinking, "I'd fuck you like Norman Osborn." That just ain't right.

I'm very familiar with Joe Kelly's JLA, though. Even solrac will admit it sucked.

*GASP* i take offense to that.... i always thought kelly's JLA was subpar (except for age of obsidian) trail by fore was so-so but was laft hanging in the end. the rest was very bad.

But Kelly at least had the superb Doug Mahnke, the best artist this series has seen so far (you heard me). Morrison had Howard Porter and a slew of fill-in artists who varied from "competent" to "lackluster." Who will Busiek have? ...Ron Garney.

Also, Kelly had an uninterrupted (with the exception of a single issue, #77) stint as writer on JLA, unlike Morrison.

Superman #210 was pretty disappointing. Nothing happened!
Flash #215 kinda sucked too.
Green Lantern Rebirth was awesome! Man... can't wait for #2.
