After that Bargirl redesign hit the web I decided to check out some US comics, I somehow stumbled on a page from The Wake which got me interested in more. I'm surprised so very few people here talk about it, I really like Sean Murphy's art.

Dug around for some lists, ended up reading by mistake an American Vampire sidestory... turns out it was also by Murphy, no wonder I liked the art so much. Afterwards I read the main series as well which I thought was pretty decent.

I rather enjoyed Murphy's Punk Rock Jesus as well, which along with the The Wake I'll probably buy as collected editions. As a scifi fan I also enjoyed Six Gun Gorilla and Saga wasn't bad either.

From the more super powers related stories I only read Powers (likely saw casting news or whatever). Tried out the new 52 Batman but wasn't really feeling it. That's about it, might give some other series a try as well now...

Honestly, I don't think it would be a good read by itself. It seems to be a few pages here and there of various characters with a pretty vague overall plot. As a fan it's AWESOME to see these guys again, especially rendered by JHW3 but if you've not got any prior connection to it then it might feel a bit random or overly mysterious.

Two thoughts -

Just read Sandman. If you're buying Absolutes or Omnibiis then yeah it's really expensive. There are only 10 collections though, if you bought one a month at $15 each you would probably finish the entire run before Overture is finished (def before it's out in a trade). Haha, always throwing out that slight connective tissue to the rest of the DCU. That panel is spectacular though: "The Space Canine Patrol Corps, the Green Lantern Corps, the Free Houses, all send representatives, all conclude that this is not a justice matter, and they leave behind only observers." That's the level of writing Vertigo needs right now.

You can absolutely jump into Overture--Gaiman has done a good job re-introducing concepts and characters, and the story so far stands on its own. It's a prelude to Sandman, but, I think you'll obviously get more out of it by reading the main Sandman series first. You'll have the appropriate context for everything occurring and you'll genuinely understand each and every character, and you'll cherish the nods to the future that Overture lays out, and you'll appreciate the explanations of things in the past from the main Sandman series.

So, my suggestion is go read Sandman, then hop into Overture. Whichever order you decide, just make sure you read Sandman. Shit is imperative.

I've heard nothing but good things about Manhattan Projects so it sounds like a good bet (wait for Tim to post about it).

Otherwise, I'd recommend Black Science or Deadly Class. Both are still relatively new and have one trade out at the moment. Saga is also really popular so that's another safe choice. What's really great is that Image releases the first trade for each series at like $10 so you can order a copy of each for ~$5 online. They have a lot of good books going on right now so you can really just take a chance with anything, worst comes to worst, you're down five bucks instead of like fifteen or twenty.

I'd also recommend Hickman's other stuff like the Nightly News, Red Mass for Mars, and Red Wing.

Non Hickman wise check out Zero, it's a spy comic that's probably the best thing being published by anyone.

Older stuff, I loved the Invisibles as a kid, if you've not read that it's pretty out there. There was also a really neat little Brubaker book called Deadenders that was set in a post-apocalyptic city and was about a gang of kids on Scooters. I saw there was a single volume collection of it, great neo-Mod style. Would be amiss to not mention Preacher as well, I'm currently reading it for the first time and I'm constantly impressed by how good and consistent it is. A lot funnier than people think of it being as well.

One great Vertigo book nobody ever talks about is Daytripper. Single volume, came out a few years back by Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon. It's a story about a man's life, told non-linearly and with a really neat and fantastically depressing twist in each chapter. It's a sombre, thoughtful read, very beautiful and at my age (31) it gave me a lot to think about regarding life and love and family.

On a similar tip, Jeff Lemire's Essex County is similarly sombre, uplifting and heartbreaking. His Sweet Tooth Vertigo series was also an excellent post-apocalypse road trip story as well.

Loads of amazing stuff now that I think about it.

Finished that Deadly Class trade in bed last night. Really really great book, instantly rockets into my top things right now. Particularly loved the first two issues, and thought #3 was the low point, but it rebounded really well with the trip to Vegas. Probably my only main sticking point (and thus why #3 was a bit of a low point) is the tendency of the characters to get quite philosophical with each other about the nature of teenagers and why they behave the way they do. I just find it unnatural. I know Remender has the lead explain he has an anxiety thing that makes him over analyse stuff, but it's still a little too from his own mouth for me when they do it. It's obviously Remender analysing why he thinks people behave the way they do, but it's just too on the nose at times. This is relatively minor though in the context of the phenomenal read it was. Just a really really great book. Wes Craig is absolutely incredible at every turn, and the colours are jaw dropping.

I, too, thought it picked right back up with their trip to Vegas. The colors and imagery brings back nostalgic memories of the few times that I've been there. Wes Craig's art really is amazing.

Yeah that Humble Bundle for Transformers is a steal. For $15 you get the first two volumes of MTMTE and Robots in Disguise and a ton of other books.

My comic shop emailed me a 20% off coupon for my birthday next month. Part of me wants to use it for an omni or something but they charge cover price on those so it'd just be cheaper to grab one online. Maybe I should use it on a statue or toy or something.

Cracking into this week's comics.

Avengers - this issue was probably the weakest of the arc so far but I'm really enjoying Hickman skipping through this mad future chronology, and I'm sure some of it will tie in to the end of his run too. But this issue really was just a monologue laid over a bunch of punchy punchy and I found myself thinking that I wish Yu was drawing all the awesome cosmic stuff being talked about rather than just some shiny androgynous avengers fighting cap. A very bizarre story so far.

New Avengers - oh yes this was very good indeed! Very tense issue, loved it. A bit overly talky perhaps given what was happening, but I think what was said was important so I can forgive it. I still have no idea what Black Swan is up to though, she bugs the shit out of me. Get to the point dammit!

Hawkeye - I say this every time but Godamn David Aja! So damn good. It's just a treat to see him drawing things, something about his art is just very pleasurable to my eye, everything is just right and feels like it's actually there. Weight and gravity and space, he's just stunning. That thick line weight on outlines just kills me for some reason.

I have never read a comic book. But I want to. I want to know how/where to get started but the vast array of characters, different iterations of characters, series, authors, arcs, reboots, and whatever else is completely overwhelming to the uninitiated. Do I just jump into something at its most current issue? Or find something and then look for issue #1 of that something? Are there universally praised series that are a good starting point for the new reader? Any advice for someone new to comics?

Are there any characters or teams you're interested in? It really is different for every character and it's easier to give some recommendations if we know what you want to get into. We have people here who read pretty much everything.

My go-to recommendation for anyone new to Marvel/DC is Hawkeye by Matt Fraction and David Aja. You don't need to know anything about Clint or Kate and it's a fun read all the way through with some great artwork. Batman by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo is another popular choice.

Both good books. As far as awesome indie books go you should go ahead and pick up SAGA vol 1. It's fantastic and delightful.

I may be biased when I recommend this but I think Harley Quinns new series is really newcomer friendly. But that trade isn't out yet so...

You don't necessarily have to start on established characters/series/arcs/reboots. You could avoid DC/Marvel to start altogether. Image is a great place to start.

Oooh. Didn't realize the slipcase TPB version was so much cheaper than the omnibuses... $115 is very reasonable compared to $170 for the two omnibuses. I really need to get on that. All this Sandman hype is making me want to read it very soon.

Finished Bloodspell. That was delightful. I wish Paul Dini would write more books, he has a great way with character interactions. Loved all the Canary and Zee downtime stuff. Art was really good too. Would love to see them team up again. The book felt so short, read it in one sitting. Probably because I was enjoying it so much. Loved the character sketches in the back. The designs for Zatanna and Canary were perfect.

Highly recommended.

Now bring back Dini's Zatanna.
