Coming to Xbox Game Pass: Sea of Stars, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Gris, and Firewatch

by Megan Spurr, Community Lead, Xbox Game Pass • Aug 15, 2023 @ 6:00am
Sometimes you want a chill game that lets you explore sorrow (in game, I don’t want to explore sorrow IRL). Sometimes you want to explore wild environments while exploring mysteries, escaping flesh eating 9nbzw2z7c4g8monsters, or even be the monster yourself. Some highly specific things you might want, and what a crazy happenstance, we’ve got just those games coming soon. Let’s take a look!

Available Today

Everspace 2 (Cloud and Xbox Series X|S)
Step into the pilot seat in this fast-paced single-player space shooter where brutal challenges stand between you and epic loot. Embark on a sci-fi adventure where massive, handcrafted areas are packed with secrets, puzzles, and perils! Level up, craft, and loot better gear to survive on the edge of space.

Coming Soon

Firewatch (Cloud, Console, and PC) – August 17
Making a return to the Game Pass library, Firewatch is a single-player, first-person mystery set in the Wyoming wilderness, where your only emotional lifeline is the person on the other end of a handheld radio. You’ll explore a wild and unknown environment, facing questions and making choices that can build or destroy the only meaningful relationship you have.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Cloud, Console, and PC) – August 18
Available on day one with Game Pass:
Take on the role of one of the notorious Slaughter family, or their victims, in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, a third-person asymmetrical horror experience based on the groundbreaking and iconic 1974 horror film. Experience the mad and macabre for yourself in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Sea of Stars (Cloud, Console, and PC) – August 29
Available on day one with Game Pass:
Sea of Stars is a turn-based RPG inspired by the classics. It tells the story of two Children of the Solstice who combine the powers of the sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic, the only force capable of fending off the monstrous creations of the evil alchemist known as The Fleshmancer.
Sea of Stars

Gris (Cloud, Console, and PC) – September 5
Gris is a hopeful young girl lost in her own world, dealing with a painful experience in her life. Her journey through sorrow is manifested in her dress, which grants new abilities to better navigate her faded reality.

I don't recall a 2 week period with only 4 games. Definitely seems super light. If they're not shadowdropping anything at Gamescom that's a pretty weak line-up. Gris and Firewatch are both pretty old. 2 day 1s is still nice, but it's usually more than this.

Totally forgot Everspace 2 is today, which should be pretty nuts.

Wasn't the last 2 week period a 4 game period?

Yeah, I mean ... I literally can't physically play everything that's coming out. Maybe they are factoring that in since so much is grouped up next couple months in a short period. Just pointing out its still a weaker 2 week drop.

  • A Short Hike – August 3 (Console, PC, Cloud)
  • Broforce Forever – August 8 (Console, PC, Cloud)

  • Everspace 2 - August 15th (Console, PC, Cloud)

not to nitpick one of those is outside of the 2 week window, but I guess perhaps they have a budget to consider - are Celeste, Limbo and A Short Hike going to be costly investments?

Having said that, Gris and Firewatch aren't exactly new.

Also next month is pretty insane for Gamepass.

Me somehow, just never in the mood. Will aim to play it this time and then rapidly forget.
Just make sure to finish it in one setting. Don't do what I did and quit halfway through to play another game. Came back to Firewatch and could not remember what I was supposed to be doing or where to go. Had to restart the entire game over.

You are literally getting in 3 weeks the biggest xbox exclusive for free on GPU and you are complaining about maybe 2 missing indie games???

Both Gris and Firewatch were on Game Pass PC a while back (I think in 2021?). Happy to see them return though as they're both awesome games.

I have no idea about any of these games except Firewatch. I hated Firewatch. Felt very smug and "wow I am so smart telling this story." Maybe I'm an idiot and missed some subtext but I have a strong aversion to dialogue-heavy walking sims now.

And none of it is free. It's a $17 monthly rental.

Eek, if you're paying that much it's quite easy to save some money if you buy codes online.

That gets it down to about $10 a month, but you can save more if you shop around.

I'm not paying that much. I'm covered through the end of 2025. We'll see what is available by then.

Those are some fantastic damn adds, particularly with the knowledge that Starfield is coming in just a few weeks as well.

Pretty sure I'll end up playing all of these.
