The main problem with this is it's really hard to figure out the impact of an animal this common on the ecosystem, especially since it's an incredibly numerous invasive species that often lives close to human populations. A lot of people point to that Nature article as proof that mosquitoes "contribute nothing to the environment", yet the overall impression one gets reading it is that there are so many different ways mosquitoes interact with the environment that it's hard to predict everything.Assuming they've actually done proper research into how this will affect the larger ecosystem, I'm all for this.
That's a big caveat, however.
Also keep in mind the plan here isn't total annihilation; it's killing the populations close to people.
