I'm surprised this hasn't been posted...

BRUSSELS, Belgium (CNN) -- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Wednesday that Iran must live up to its international obligations to halt its nuclear program or "the next steps are in the offing."

"And I think everybody understands what the 'next steps' mean,"
Rice told reporters after a meeting with NATO foreign ministers and European Union officials.

"It's obvious that if Iran cannot be brought to live up to its international obligations that, in fact, the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) statutes would suggest that Iran has to be referred to the U.N. Security Council," she said.

Iran has refused to halt its nuclear program, saying it is only intended for peaceful energy production.
Is this her version of diplomacy? Super.

Between this and Bush's State of the Union address, I think we might as well start taking bets on when we first strike.

Amazing, isn't it? It's like that dream where you're in the car, but no matter how much you turn the steering wheel, the car keeps going over the cliff.

They have no international obligations. They aren't under sanctions. Do the Bushies really think they have the right to determine which countries can have which weapons.

also in the news:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) said on Wednesday Iran with a nuclear weapon would be a "very destabilizing" force and that it was important for the world to speak with one voice against Tehran's program.

"The Iranians just need to know that the free world is working together to send a very clear message: Don't develop a nuclear weapon," Bush said.

"And the reason we're sending that message is because Iran with a nuclear weapon would be a very destabilizing force in the world," he said during a meeting with Poland's president.

Bush said he looked forward to discussing concerns about Iran with European allies. "It's important we speak with one voice," he said.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites) has raised U.S. concerns about Iran during her trip to Europe. "I'm very pleased with the response that European leaders have given to Dr. Rice on this issue," Bush said.

U.S. officials, including Rice and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, have said the United States was pursuing a diplomatic solution for its concerns about Iran, and not a military one. Rumsfeld has said Iran was still years away from having a nuclear weapon.

Rice said on Wednesday a diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear program was "in our grasp" if Europe sent the same tough message as the United States, threatening U.N. sanctions.

What War? :) The difference is that Iraq was under international sanctions and was told to disarm by the UN. The Bushies then said "look look their breaking the rules" They are now saying the same thing about Iran, with one difference. Iran isn't under sanctions. Iran hasn't been told to disarm by the UN. Yet the Bushies say they are breaking the rules. What rules. What Obligations.

Why don't we just have Hulk "I am a real American" Hogan wrestle the Iranian Iron Sheik in the steel cage?

I predict Hulk would start out like a house of fire, but then quickly be overwhelmed by a combination of the Sheik's technical wrestling skills, plus outside interference by the corpse of "Classy" Freddy Blassie. The Sheik's offense would culminate in the camel clutch and the referee would check Hogan's arm ...

I further predict the crowd's reaction would energize Hogan and, instead of letting his hand drop for the third time, he would instead hold it erect and waggle his finger. Hogan would then power out of the clutch, and begin the photochemical process known as "Hulking Out." Invulnerable to pain in this state, Hogan would wait until the Sheik attempted to knock him out with punches. He would then point menacingly to the Sheik, punch him until he reached the ropes, and then whip his foe to the opposite side of the ring.

Wrestling physics would propel the Sheik back toward Hulk after rebounding against the far rope. The Sheik would be greeted by Hogan's huge foot, and knocked insensate. Hogan would then drop the big leg and get the three count.

Senseless war averted.

you know how everyone hated the bully in high school? yeah...

Yeah, and in most of those movies the kids all teamed up against the bully ... but hey, it will certainly help with the over population on this planet. :(

I'm calling bullshit on Condi. We aren't actually going into Iran, we're just trying to talk tough to cause Iran to disarm. The difference between Iran and Iraq is that Iran most likely does have developed nuclear weapons, and not just a program, unlike Iraq. So it's far too much of a risk to invade or anything.

Yes but if all this bull shit money got spent on renewable energy that would help much more with the worlds over population.

Well you know what? At least the Gays can't marry in America, and pretty soon with enough money, in the mystical land of Canadia!

USA!
USA!
USA!

So yeah, I'm thinking I'm going to take a BB gun and shoot down as many incoming Atlanta-bound nukes as possible. I'd be a hero to Coke lovers everywhere.... well everywhere that's left after "it's" all done.

That's the last thing these people care about. They think anyone who disagrees with them is stupid.

Take a world map folks, look where Iran is on that map.

Between Iraq and Afghanistan, coincidence? Yeah right.

Crap. This reminds me of what the CIA did with Shah Palavi. So I wonder what the UN weapons inspectors will find this time? This is exactly why I wanted Kerry to win the election. It may start out as something small but it will definetly snowball.

I really, truly don't understand what the Bush administration is doing. What happened to trying diplomacy? Europe is making SOME progress, however slowly, are they not? Why fuck that up and only make Iran more aggressive and paranoid?

Conservatives domestically...

Radical revolutionaries internationally...

Crazy, crazy, crazy

Yep. However, any Security Council resolution would most likely end up being vetoed by Russia and/or China.
Thus paving the way for war! Why mess with a perfect formula?

Like I said, this situation is entirely unlike Iraq, I would think. I'm sure Bush & co. would love to get a piece of that Iranian pie, but I think there're far too many problems associated with invading Iran that I think even an administration as batshit-insane as the Bush Admin. would have to be out of their mind to invade.

For one, Europe is on good terms with Iran...even if we went in unilaterally like we did in Iraq, we wouldn't get their support later on if things got messy. In Iraq's case, more or less the whole world hated Saddam, and were only grudgingly unhappy to see him ousted from power, even through illegal means. Not so with Iran, who's had peaceful economic relations with Europe for a while now.

Also, this war will be a lot harder to sell domestically, as it's common knowledge that for the most part, Iran isn't nearly as extreme as Iraq and N. Korea are in its human rights abuses, despite Bush painting them into the Axis of Evil.

Although...I wouldn't put it past Bush to make an attempt to sell this war, I think even an only half-awake American populace would oppose a potential war completely. There's no way it's gonna happen.
