Condoleezza Rice gives Iran an ultimatum

i never realized how big iran was........ i mean is. no way would they introduce ground troops there. no way no how. however, bush could take a page out of nixon ( i think he took like half the damn book though) and say that iraqi insurgents have sanctuaries in iran and in order to protect american troops they need to destroy those sanctuaries.

They probably have nuclear weapons already or would have them by the time any type of military force could mobilize against them.

I just crack up when I think of Rice talking diplomacy to these diplomats and what not. Reminds me of that SNL skit with Janet Jackson as Condi or "Connnnnnnnndeeeeeeeee" :lol

There is realistically no way we can, unilaterally anyway, conduct a military excursion into Iran at the moment barring targeted air strikes, but we don't even have that much information to do that even. It's just not an option. I think Rice is trying to convey to Iran that this game cannot, and will not, hang indefinitely, and that if they don't accept the European offer than America will use its leverage to report them to the UN Security Council as soon as possible -- and from there, I strongly suspect NATO will come into play. The goal, I suspect, isn't necessarily a regime change as much as it is to prevent nuclear proliferation from such a hostile entity as Iran in the Middle East. Toppling too many regimes consecutively would have dire implications and destabilize the region far more than is necessary, as well as bog down first and second tier nations (Japan, China, Russia, Europe, Canada, America, etc) into a long-term set of heavy financial and military commitments; far, far more so than where we are now.

But really, North Korea, as Kerry noted ages ago, is a far more urgent situation in parallel with Iran, as they've been engaging in black market nuclear grade weapons trade for some time now, supposedly to help float the government's miserable situation. That one is going to be tricky, given that we need to leverage Japan, Russia, China, and South Korea into that, and our relations with them all, let alone their relations with each other, is nowhere near as strong as they should be for the sort of action needed. Bush had best ditch his Social Security reform now and start putting his weight where it matters.

So what if they have nuclear weapons, are we gonna attack india and pakistan now too?

'Iran Claims No. 2 Position for World Oil Reserves
Agence France Presse

TEHRAN, 4 July 2004 — Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh announced yesterday that new oil discoveries in the southwest of the country now meant the Islamic republic held the No. 2 position in world crude reserves.'

They had the guy from the New Yorker on the daily show the other day. The stuff he was talking about was just fucking scary as shit. Though..... I can easily see it happening.

Bush won't invade Iran. That's just crazy talk. It'll be covert ops and air strikes through and through. He'll do anything to avoid another unpopular war, a potential draft, etc.

We still haven't finished in Afghanistan.
We aren't even close to being done in Iraq.
We keep being told that we barely have enough soldiers to take care of current issues... their dipping in to IRR, they are sending soldiers back who were already told they would have to do no more tours....

Iran these days doesn't reall seem to be doing much saber rattling... North Korea on the other hand... and what are we doing about them? Seeking diplomatic solutions... brilliant.

When does it f'n end?

Congrats America you've elected great leadership... AGAIN.

At this rate, the only measure left would be for the rest of the world to invade us. I don't want to sound like an asshole, but who in the hell voted for Bush? Are they blind or are they stupid?

as it's common knowledge that for the most part, Iran isn't nearly as extreme as Iraq and N. Korea are in its human rights abuses
:lol You're kidding right? Iran has been demonised in the U.S for close to a few decades now. And now they're a part of the axis of evil what with them mullahs and hating America and harbouring Al-Qaeda!

Also, this war will be a lot harder to sell domestically, as it's common knowledge that for the most part, Iran isn't nearly as extreme as Iraq and N. Korea are in its human rights abuses, despite Bush painting them into the Axis of Evil.

Although...I wouldn't put it past Bush to make an attempt to sell this war, I think even an only half-awake American populace would oppose a potential war completely. There's no way it's gonna happen.
Do you think it's too late to claim that Iran was really the driving force behind 9/11 ?

They'll pull the terrorist card again. It's still a trump for most people.

Wouldn't it be funny to apply this to real life? Walk around the block, asking the neighbors if they own any weapons, then shoot them if they do. Better be safe than sorry... Am I right??

Like I said, I really think any move to bring this matter to U.N Security Council will be vetoed by Russia and China. Iran and Russia are very close to announcing a new nuclear fuel contract, and China I believe in November/December revealed their $70 billion oil and natural gas deal with Iran. Both are long-term deals. I'm sure Iran has asked some kinds of veto guarentees from them before they signed those deals.

I think so. The problem with Iraq was that people were scared to oppose the war, for fear of being labeled a "Saddam lover". And in truth, no one was all that displeased to see him ousted from power. In Iran's case though, there're no such problems, as the Mullah has been relatively willing to cooperate with at least the Europeans, if not America.

Actually we have more capability in a single Ohio Class SSBN which can carry 24 MIRV warheads than all 3 countries are estimated to have combined.

alright, NOW you're scaring me.

Heh, if you want to be really scared - find out how large the US SSBN fleet is :) I'm fairly confident that if NK really decided to act stupid and fire a missle at us - and we we unable to bomb the site into the ground before launch (unlikely, given the large visible presence of a launch prep from space), in response large sections of the country would rise in temperature a few hundred degrees in oh 30 minutes.
