Considering the time period, what is the best game ever made?

I've just finished watching the video of Speed Demo Archive in which Mario 64 is beaten with all the stars (120) so quick.
An occasion, i said to myself, to see again one of the greatest title of the vg history. And to see it in all its beauty.

Moreover, it was a long time since I played that title in that old 94 summer, i beat it not with all the stars (let's say about 80). And you know, sometimes when you try again an OLD title, the peception is different because the time is changed and the magic of that time too.

Seeing it i was shocked.
I didn't remember how good this title was. Let's say it better: how perfect this title was.
I think Miyamoto really sold his soul to the devil to make a so unbelievable game.
10 years ago, we played a game that until now was not matched yet (and it makes an "impossible mission" to beat it).

I guess it is the best game ever made compared to the time in which it was released.
For sure it is the best launch game of gaming history.

I believe (off the top of my head) that Mario 64 was released in 95 or 96... Otherwise, I agree wholeheartedly. I played the game at Wal-Mart (couldn't afford an N64) and got to 120 stars over the course of 3 weeks of playing with the store staff and random people watching get on to the Castle roof... it was an awesome experience.

It has to to be Shenmue. By the time it was released, it was overwhelmingly breathtaking (and it still is) and didn't quite resemble anything previously released. And it's still, after almost five years, one of the most beautiful games ever made.

I agree on Mario 64 though, it's up there too.
 
The mechanics & striking balance of Street Fighter II make the game a timeless classic. The graphics and sound are also not to shabby.
 
I think Mario 64 is definitely in the running.

Robotron 2084 would also qualify, since i'm assuming it was great then, and it's still incredibly fun, addictive and scary 23 years later.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is a very polished game, and has incredible control, just like Mario 64. It would be a stand out pick in my opinion.

I forgot an important thing: the age we have now.
It is impossibile a 14 years old guy tried Mario in 1996 ;).
So please if you can, include your age.

Mario 64 or the original Legend of Zelda, for me.


Honorable mention goes to Doom, SF2, Super Metroid (yes, I think it was THAT good), and Super Mario Bros.

I think on the top of the list really have to be Super Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid, and NiGHTs.
 
Mario 64. Indeed the best game ever made for its time (no my favourite though)

Robotron. Perfect for the era of endlessly-playable twitch games, a great balance between score and risk.

Grand Theft Auto:VC The potential of a massive 3D environment achieved at last

Nethack-- being text, could have been made anytime. best random dungeon crawl ever.

Wipeout 1: when 3D was just taking off, this game utized it perfectly, to take the F-Zero/Merio Kart formula (clear inspiration for the series) to new levels of intensity. Beating the Antartic track was exactly the right amount of challenge.

Super mario 3: really pushing the limits of what the tech could do to make an experience worlds beyond SMB or the Lost levels.
 
I really can't pick between Super Mario 64 and Soul Calibur.

But my two personal favorite games of all-time are SMB3 and Zelda: OOT. Oh yea, Tetris also owns forever.
 
I like this question. The only way i can answer it is by picking the games that blew me away at the time. Mario 64 might be it... it was unlike anything i'd ever played up to that point. No need to go into it... you all know. My second choice is METROID (the original) Following the 2600 years, this open ended adventure was something i'd never experienced, and suits my personality. I'd only drop it down a notch because in some ways, Pitfall II had shown the way 3 years or so earlier.

I dont think any other game made so much of an impact on my tiny child brain. So cool, even today. I can beat this sucker so fast, but it's alwatys fun.
 
I'd say it's a 3 way tie between Rez, Chrono Trigger, and Ikaruga for "games that are so fucking brilliant that I'm still amazed by how good they are when i pick them up X years later"
 
There was no doubt in my mind in 1986 what the greatest game of all time was:

I'd almost say the same thing about Super Mario 64...except for the fact that we also had NightS, and Crash Bandicoot. The last one hasn't aged well, but many people were blown away by it at the time. In 1986, there was only ONE Super Mario Bros.

I wonder why I bought this one long time ago...Never enjoyed it...Still have the japanese copy.
 
As for the whole package... and probably technically the best game ever made.... Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The graphics were great, the music was brilliant, the gameplay unmatched at the time, and its zelda. I remember when I first tried to show this game off to a friend.. I tried to explain the size of the game. Not length.. not difficulty.. but actual square miles. The overworld was enormous, the dungeons sprawled on forever. It was the first game that truely lived up the adventure name. You felt like the world was living.

However, my personal favorite has to be the Orginal Zelda on the NES. That game was all that mattered to me when I was a young kid. I remember drawing in things on the map they provided you, and actually using the "Notes" section in the booklet! I was completely hooked. It was at that time where you could literally be stuck on the same stupid dungeon puzzle for weeks and not care. There were no guides.. no internet... nothing buy good old word of mouth from friends. No game will ever take me in like that again. It was combination of a good game,fresh experiences, and imagination that I'll never forget.
 
Super Mario Bros 3, compared to the other NES titles it’s head and shoulders above everything else.

I sat down and finished the game again a few nights ago on my NES, it’s aged so dam well!
