The rise of American companies comes hand in hand with the rise of the digital age, explained Stephen Baker, an analyst with technology research company NPD Group Inc.

"Most of the Japanese (electronics) companies are analog companies, but most of the American companies are digital companies," Baker said. "All of the technology behind today's products is (digital)."

"I think it boils down to innovation," he said. "American firms have been the leaders in innovation lately, whereas the Japanese have sort of been tinkering with their old products, saying, 'OK, I have the technology already, can I just make it a little bit better?' "

I agree that american companies has made a lot of great games latley, but I don't agree that they have been making more innovative titles than the japanese.

It's not about games. Kind of a dumb article too. They can name a few successful American products and suddenly the US is on top?

This article is stretching it in parts.

In other areas, U.S. makers are coming on strong. Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox is threatening to edge out Japan's Nintendo for video games.

:lol OK, let's completely ignore Sony, shall we?

Also, if we class cellphones as consumer electronics..well, the US has a bit of catching up to do in that arena.

They're not talking about games specifically there, I don't think? Rather devices in general?

Ummm...

Despite tough times in Japan, Sony rules the business of televisions, video-game consoles and digital cameras. Other Asian companies control the markets for cellphones, DVD players and VCRs.
